Feed me, care for me, and when the day’s work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed and a stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. Talk to me. Your voice means as much as the reins. See that I have plenty of water; I need lots of it, especially during the long, hot summer days, and in the winter, see that I have a warm blanket.

Pet me sometimes, that I may learn to love you and that I may serve you more gladly. Do not jerk the reins or whip me.

Never strike, beat, or kick me when I do not know what you want, but give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding, or am uneasy, nervous, or irritable, see if something is wrong with my bridle or saddle or feet.

When I go lame, I may have corns, a stone, or a nail in my foot. If necessary, take me to a good blacksmith.

Examine my teeth when I do not eat. I may have an ulcerated tooth and that, you know, is very painful. If I am not doing well, give me something for worms, for they may be taking my strength.

Do not lie my head in an uncomfortable position or take away my best defense against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my tail.

Brush and curry me at least once a day, so my hair will shine and be nice and glossy. I want you to be proud of me when you show me to your friends.

And finally, O My Master, when my youthful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze.

Keep me not out in the rain all night or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured and starved to death, but do thou, O My Master, take my life in the kindest way and your God will reward you here and hereafter.

Smoke is a smooth riding, very unique colored (carries the champagne dilution gene) easy moving gelding that has been our ranch foreman’s (Garrett Leonard) main using horse this season. He has been used to pasture doctor, at brandings, and to AI heifers. We raised this horse and I swore he would never leave the place, but it’s time to make room for the next generation. Smoke is by our ranch stud, Rocket, and resembles him in conformation, athletic ability, and in the way he moves. A lot of foundation breeding in this horse. I kept a full sister back that is a year younger to use as a broodmare prospect after we are done using her. Smoke’s mother is in her 20’s now. Maternal half sister sells as Lot 15.

Sully is an outstanding horse in every way, in everything she does. She has a very sweet disposition, is gentle, and as honest as the day is long. An appendix bred mare, out of one of our best producing ranch mares, Sully is very athletic and has never been unsound a day in her life. She is a finished head horse that is great in the box, whether you rope 1 or 20, she’s the same every time. Reece won a saddle on her at a jackpot roping. She will work for a lower numbered roper, but could easily be turned up without any difficulty. She has only been hauled to jackpots so far. Rick even used her as a pickup horse at a couple high school rodeos, and she never missed a beat. Whenever we need a good gentle horse for an intermediate rider at the ranch, we put them on Sully. Frosty is Rick’s ‘high private’ riding horse this year. Out of a Frosty Feature mare and by our great producing performance stallion, Tee, she is ‘cowy’ and has a really nice handle. She absolutely loves people, is gentle and nice to be around, not to mention really really pretty. He has used her for just about everything on the ranch. She has a scar on her left shoulder (doesn’t bother her at all) from a mountain lion running her through a fence as a yearling. She can be fresh when she’s first saddled, but let her walk it out for a little bit and she’s usually good to go. This outstanding mare is an easy mover and pretty to watch. I would think she would get noticed as a 4H prospect also. Not too much excites her at all. She will have 30 days arena roping training by Rusty Kluender by sale day. Full sister to lot 11.

What can I say about this little stinker? Well, first off, he’s darned sure gentle, and has been since the day he was born. He doesn’t have a mean bone to him, he’s pretty, kind, easy to catch, loves people, and so much more. He is out of a sweetheart of a mare that we have had for a lot of years, and he’s by our ranch stallion Rocket. Well started and ridden by trainers Scott Whinfrey, and Boe and Misti Brown, he is ready to go on and do great things. Garrett used him at one of our brandings and he handled everything well for a young horse. Quite a bit of run in his pedigree, top and bottom, with Easy Jet and Doc’s Benito Bar breeding. This horse should fill out more as he matures. His dam and sire are both thick made and bred for speed.

Sunny is a young gelding that is out of a mare I sold a couple years ago, and I was fortunate enough to buy him back. He is out of a Diamond Cross mare and gets all the flash from Tee. We have been so busy this summer that we haven’t been able to starting him. A full brother was sold to Matt and Emma Minor this spring, and they are very happy with his disposition. This gelding will hopefully follow that horse’s lead.

I bought Quixote from Bobby Lewis a few years back because I wanted the influence of Peptoboonsmal in our herd. On the bottom side, Quixote has Hollywood Heat, AQHA Champion and Superior 3-event rope horse, in addition to NRHA Open Futurity and NRCHA money earner and Super Horse Contender. I specifically crossed her with Watcher to get a horse that could either go to the cutting pen, or make an outstanding rope horse. This is a pretty nice filly and you would be hard pressed to find one better.

Ringo has always had a nice baby, and this year’s no exception. Maternal sister, TBR Tee Time, is an outstanding calf horse that has helped Rusty Kluender claim many calf roping championships and titles in recent years. This colt will follow in those footsteps, no doubt. He prominently displays the legendary breeding of Sugar Bars. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Little Foot is a grandson of the great Smart Little Lena. He is a finished head horse and barrel horse. The guys have been roping on him in the practice pen, but he has been hauled to quite a few jackpots. Katie has been taking him to some jackpot barrel racings this summer. He rides good, has a real nice handle, and will spin a hole in the ground. He is good to trim and shoe, and is UTD on vaccinations. Just a real nice horse, but we’re a little concerned that Katie’s going to hide him out on sale day!

“Buck” is a 7 year old buckskin gelding that stands about 15.1 and has a lot of foot and a lot of bone. He was started as a reiner and then moved over to the roping as a 5 year old. He has been used on the ranch for gathering cattle, dragging calves to the fire and roping bulls. He has also been on both sides of the hot heels and started on live steers on the heading side. He leaves on your hand from the box and he is very fast to the hip and pulls strong from the horn. Buck is a really nice horse, great to be around with great ground manners. He hauls good, is easy to catch and stands good for the farrier. A nice horse with a lot of potential.

“Rock” is a 2006 grade yellow roan (palomino) gelding. He has been everywhere and seen it all. Extremely gentle horse that we have used on the ranch from dragging calves to the branding fire, gathering/sorting cattle, to roping bulls in the pasture. We have headed many steers off of him as well. He has been packed off of and has even went on some wild hog hunts! This horse will go all day for you and give 100% every minute. Frosty is a grade buckskin mare. She’s an all around horse and has been there and done that. She has been a kids’ ranch horse her whole life, but has also been to Jr. High, High School, and amateur rodeos, in addition to open barrel races. She’s had countless buckles and all-around buckles won on her. In 2008 I was the reserve champion breakaway roper in Jr High riding her, and took her to the National Finals in Gallup, NM, and we ended up 21st in the standings. My brother Cord and sister Clancy still ride her today at high school rodeos, using her for breakaway and team roping, and they continue to win on her. She is also a finished head horse. Anybody can ride her from your 4 year old to great grandma. She has baby sat all 5 of us kids growing up and is ready to help out her next family.
