What is GIS?Definition - The U.S. Geological Survey

In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system

capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and

    displaying geographically referenced information, i.e.

data identified according to their locations.Practitioners also regard the total GIS as including

operating personnel and the data that go into the

    system.

What is GIS?Definition Environmental Systems Research Institute

A geographic information system (GIS) is a

computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing

things that exist and events that happen on earth.

    GIS technology integrates common database

operations such as query and statistical analysis with

the unique visualization and geographic analysis

    benefits offered by maps.

    Integration of WebFOCUS and ArcGIS

    In this section you will:

Understand the purpose and function of ArcGIS

Understand how and why WebFOCUS integrates withArcGIS

Compare the operation of ArcGIS to that ofWebFOCUS

Understand how WebFOCUS and ArcGIS worktogether

    What is ArcGIS?

The user interacts with a map viewer

The viewer allows the user to pan, zoom inand out, or highlight areas of interest

An out-of-the-box viewer is provided withArcGIS. Or,

A developer can create a customized viewertailored to the customers needs

ArcGIS is a server-based product by ESRI(www.esri.com) that delivers maps and GIS data over theWeb (Internet or Intranet).

    What is a Map?

To ArcGIS, a map is collection of layers.

A layer is an abstraction of real-world entities

into one of three basic shapes:

    Points (stores, customers)

    Lines (streets, railroads, power lines)

Polygons (states, counties, votingprecincts, land parcels)

  • 8/7/2019 WebFOCUS_Leveraging_ESRI

    25/43

A map is built of layers of attributes

    26/43

    ArcGIS Layers, Features and Attributes

Layers are stored in a Geodatabase either anRDBMS system or static shape files

Address data becomes a Point layer through the

process ofGeocoding. (Think MapQuest or GoogleMaps) determining latitude and longitude (andthus a location on a map) given a Street address.

Any individual point, line or polygon within a layer iscalled a feature.

    27/43

    ArcGIS Layers, Features and Attributes

Features can be displayed on a map in varioussizes, shapes, and colors.

A single unique feature corresponds to one row in a

    database.

Layers usually have some attribute data stored withthe features

Attributes correspond to columns in a database.

The more richly attributed the features are, the moreinformative the map can be.

    ArcGIS Layers, Features and Attributes

Attribute data can be displayed on a map in the form of labels,or in the legend.

    Why integrate WebFOCUS with ArcGIS?

ArcGIS and WebFOCUS are integrated in the followingtwo ways:

Map to Report Select features on a map and sendthem to WebFOCUS to process and display on a

report, combining the result with enterprise-wide data.In other words, use the map as selection criteria for areport.

Report to Map WebFOCUS provides a list offeatures for ArcGIS to draw on a map. The color,

shapes, and/or sizes of these features werecalculated by WebFOCUS, based on the enterprise-wide data and related business logic.

    31/43

    Why integrate WebFOCUS with ArcGIS?

This way, an analyst can use a map to drive aWebFOCUS report, and conversely, use anyreporting data in the entire enterprise to generate asmart map.

This bi-directional communication between reports andmaps adds a whole new dimension to the analysis, aswell explore.
