HUL281 Science and Humanism 3-0-0The growth of science and technology, particularly upto the nineteenth century, led to a phenomenal increase in knowledge, power and material prosperity. However, this also brought in its wake a worldview that was reductionist, mechanistic and materialistic. The twentieth century while contributing to colossal and widespread application of science and technology, also witnessed multiple global crises resulting from technological maladies. It is noteworthy that new developments in science such as relativity theory, quantum mechanics, new biology, Gaia theory etc. pioneered by Einstein, Heisenberg, Sheldrake, Lovelock among others have helped in understanding physical reality better, questioning the reductionist worldview and pointing towards a more holistic one. Simultaneous with these developments in science, there has been a revival and practical rejuvenation of ancient humanistic philosophies by stalwarts such as Gandhi, Tolstoy, Aurobindo, Vivekananda. This course emphasizes that science and humanism are two complementary aspects of human endeavour. For the well-being and development of humankind, both science and humanism need to coexist synergistically.
VEL701 Sustainable Development : Vision, Values & Concepts 3-0-0The objective of the course is to introduce the vision, values and concepts of sustainable development in the context of rural industrialisation and entrepreneurship. Course will also impart criteria for evaluating sustainability of rural technologies in sectors such as energy, agriculture, housing, textiles, water management etc. Some of the course topics include : Need for Sustainable Development?, What is Development?, Sustainable Development, Values for Sustainable Development, Technologies for Sustainable Development, Challenges of Sustainable Development, Characteristics of Appropriate
17
Technology, Appropriate Technologies for agriculture, artisanal sector, housing etc , Challenges in implementing Sustainable Development, Various Models of Sustainable Development.
VEL710 Traditional Knowledge & Values 3-0-0The primary objective of the course is to expose students to the social and cultural values inherent in traditional knowledge systems (TKS) available with various communities of India and to understand the contemporary significance of these values and the knowledge systems for moving towards a harmonious and sustainable global world order. Lecture Organisation includes : Some of the values inherent in these TKS are respect for all life and non-life, respect for diversity, awareness of social and ecological impact of activities, self-sufficiency, sustainability, socially appropriate, use of local natural and knowledge resources, decentralized, aesthetically pleasing, wealth distributive etc. It would be emphasized that these values are inherently present in the framework of knowledge systems and are not add-ons. Traditional Technologies which are developed as part of the TKS framework are invented and tested in the field, where all environmental and social interactions, in particular its effect on other life-forms known and unknown are allowed to play their part. This non-fragmented approach makes such knowledge holistic and avoids the errors and pitfalls when technologies are applied on the basis of incomplete or inadequate theories.
