Suicidal people are fully intent on dying.

FALSE:Most suicidal people are undecided about living or dying, which is called “suicidal ambivalence.” A part of them wants to live; however, death seems like the only way out of their pain and suffering. They may allow themselves to "gamble with death," leaving it up to others to save them.

Asking a depressed person about suicide will push him/her to complete suicide.

FALSE: Studies have shown that patients with depression have these ideas and talking about them does not increase the risk of them taking their own life.

Community risk and protective factors are critical because they make it more or less likely that entire communities will suffer from violence.

Things that increase peoples’ and communities’ resilience to violence include:

Indiana statistics supporting the need for increased suicide prevention efforts:• All data below is from the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey:

• 19.8 % of Indiana youth have seriously considered suicide

• 17% of Indiana youth made a suicide plan

• 9.9% of Indiana youth attempted suicide

• 3.9% of Indiana youth had a suicide attempt that required medical care

• Depending on reporting source, Indiana has the 2nd or 3rd highest rate in the nation of high school students who have contemplated suicide (1 in 5 students)

• Indiana tied for 10th highest percentage of high school students attempting suicide (1 in 9 students)

Other statistics supporting the need for suicide prevention efforts:

• Males are 4 times more likely to die by suicide than females

• Females are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than males

• Suicide is 3rd leading cause of death for youth 10-14

• Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youth 15-24

HEA 1430 Highlights (related to education) continued:

• Enacted by the General Assembly of Indiana 2017

• Created position of coordinator for a statewide program of suicide prevention per IC 12-21-1-3(3)

Per IC 20-28-3-6:• “Requires 2 hours of training every 3 years from an evidenced based

training program…that has been approved, recommended, or listed as approved by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center or the National Registry of Evidenced-based Programs and Practices of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.”

• “Beginning after June 30, 2018, each school corporation, charter school, or accredited non-public school shall require all teachers and may require other appropriate school employees who are employed at school and provide instruction to students in any combination of grades 5-12.”

• Defines teacher (Superintendent, Principal, Teacher, Librarian, School Counselor, School Social Worker, School Psychologist, School Nurse)

HEA 1430 Highlights (related to education):• “Each school corporation shall adopt a policy addressing measures

intended to increase child suicide awareness and prevention” including (per IC 20-26-5-34.4)

• Counseling services for the child / family related to suicide prevention

• Referral information • Increase awareness of relationship between suicide and substance use• Training on warning signs of child considering suicide• Availability of information of suicide prevention services in community

• Cooperation between school corp. and community suicide prevention services

• Development of plan for postvention for survivors of attempted suicide and to assist school corporation students and staff with coping with an attempted suicide or death by suicide of a student or employee.

HEA 1430 Highlights (related to education) continued:• Format for suicide prevention training:

• In person (preferred by professional in field of suicide prevention)• On-line• Individual program of study• Any other method approved by the governing body

• Training shall count toward professional development requirements

• Schools can utilize:• Existing or new state and federal grant funds• Free or reduced cost evidenced based youth suicide prevention training

provided by any state agency or qualified statewide or local organization

Response to 1430 (related to education):• Creation of Model School Suicide Prevention Policy by a group of experts in the field of suicide

prevention, for school corps to reference or adopt

• Addresses issues from IC 20-26-5-34.4

• Comprehensive in nature (policy, procedures, and resources all-in-one)

• Educational, informative, useful resource tool

• Establish list of suicide prevention trainings that are recommended by suicide prevention professionals, and / or satisfy the minimum requirements of 1430

• Building capacity throughout the state for schools to connect to QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training nearby to help address requirements of IC 20-28-3-6.

• Advocacy with current 2018 Indiana Legislature to amend language in 1430 to allow for more quality training options through SB 230

Response to 1430 (related to education) continued:• Increase knowledge and connection to nearby suicide prevention

resources / professional to build network of support

• Collaborative work with Statewide Suicide Prevention Coordinator to increase awareness of and participation in suicide prevention efforts across Indiana

• Provide ongoing communication and guidance to field

• Promote concept that everyone has a part in this work of suicide prevention, not just those who have professional roles or are highly trained in the work of suicide prevention
