ruce Springsteen may be the Boss, but country music superstar Eric Church is most defi nitely the

Chief – both on the charts and on stage. With special guests Dwight Yoakam and Halestorm in tow, he’s bringing the hysteria of the Outsiders World Tour to the Ford Center on November 22. The 37-year-old North Carolina nati ve is riding a wave of success, having scored four number one singles over the last two years, including the refl ecti ve “Springsteen” from 2012’s CMA award-winning Chief and “Give Me Back My Hometown” from his latest release, The Outsiders. But if there’s one song that Church is known for, it’s “Drink in My Hand,” a rowdy, rousing tribute to all the 9-5ers out there working hard and getti ng nowhere: “Fill it up or throw it down/I got a forty hour week of trouble to drown/No need to complicate it, I’m a simple man/All you got to do is put a drink in my hand.” Of course, Church is no stranger to celebrati ng the joys of letti ng loose. Prior to releasing his debut album, Sinners Like Me, in 2006, he co-wrote the 2005 tracks, “The World Needs a Drink” and “Whisky Wings” by Terri Clark and Dean Miller, respecti vely. They were party-starters for sure, but it wasn’t unti l Church took over the mic that things really got crazy. Aft er the relati ve success of Sinners and its follow-up,

2009’s Carolina, he got a litt le rougher around the edges and struck plati num – several ti mes over – with 2012’s Chief. Along with “Drink in My Hand” and “Springsteen,” the album featured the singles “Homeboy” and “Creepin,” both fan favorites. Suddenly, Church was the talk of Nashville; he received numerous CMA and CMT nominati ons and awards and even made inroads outside of the country community with his brash, rebellious nature and appreciati on for heavier music. Aft er some much needed rest, Church returned to the charts this year with the aptly ti tled The Outsiders. “Cold One,” a standout track and the third single, tells a tale of lost love in the way that only he can: “That was a cold one, I will never get it back/If she had to leave, did she have to leave me one beer short of a twelve pack?” It’s the sort of universal questi on that has no answer – other than to reach for another cold one. Church’s ability to mix humor and heartache is in full eff ect on The Outsiders and fans are lapping it up and throwing it down. But as wild as

Church can get on record, nothing compares to the chaoti c live shows he puts on; it’s a party from note one. If you aren’t currently a fan, you will be by the ti me the curtain comes down. For this tour, Church is bringing along a litt le of the old school and the new school. Dwight Yoakam is a country legend and talented actor best known for the song “Guitars, Cadillacs” and his excellent work in Sling Blade while Halestorm is a contemporary metal quartet fronted by force of nature, Lizzy Hale. Currently at work on their third album, the band has rocked every major festi val and built a huge following. – Thomas Ellis

In just three short years, Jarrod Greer has transformed his Lexington-based Geek Galaxy Comic Con from a modest conventi on into a hugely popular, much-anti cipated event att ended by over 19,000 fans. The overwhelming success of Geek Galaxy naturally led to thoughts of staging another conventi on somewhere in the area and Evansville seemed like a logical choice. “[It] just struck me as the town to do it,” Greer says. “I have worked with the Old Nati onal Events Plaza in the past and know the people there. Evansville has a strong community, and it’s defi nitely a town deserving of the caliber of the conventi ons that other towns get – if not the size.” He has no illusions about doing

something on a massive scale but hopes to get his foot in the door and get something established before other promoters follow suit. As Greer noted, despite the smaller size, the Evansville version of Geek Galaxy will be of the highest quality with special guests ranging from Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca the Wookie in the original Star Wars movies as well as the prequels) and no less than fi ve former Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. “Power Rangers is a huge genre right now,” Greer says. “The show was at its peak 20 years ago, so the people that grew up watching it are in their thirti es now. That’s the target demographic. I know lots of people will turn up to see those guys, and we’ll sti ll add a few people before the event happens.” While thirty-somethings do come out in droves for comic cons, the reach of the conventi ons is “amazing,” according to Greer. “It prett y much spans all age groups, both men and women as well as kids,” he says. “Women, especially, are really coming into their own in the comic community. There are a lot of them working in comics right now, and they’re really giving men a run for their money in the art world.”

Speaking of comics, the Old Nati onal Events Plaza fl oor will be lined with vendors selling thousands of them, along with a huge selecti on of pop culture toys (from the 1940s to current). And then there are the costumes. “A big part of Geek Galaxy is just watching all the cool costumes go by,” Greer says. “Lots of people that att end dress up and stay in character the whole weekend.” A great look may also win you some cash. First prize for the costume contest is $500. The price for Evansville’s inaugural Geek Galaxy Comic Con is about as cheap as you’ll fi nd anywhere across the country. A weekend pass is only $30, but you can also purchase a single day ti cket for just $20 (Saturday) or $15 (Sunday). Either way, the entertainment value is off the charts. – Thomas Ellis

The two-day Geek Galaxy Comic Con takes place November 15 & 16 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. For ti ckets and further info, visit geekgalaxycomiccon.com. The Old Nati onal Events Plaza is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

ven aft er 80 years, it’s sti ll the greatest show on earth.2014 marks the 81st editi on of the Hadi Shrine Circus, a remarkable run that has eclipsed virtually every other producti on in North America. To say that the tri-state has been spoiled is an

understatement. Very few citi es are treated to such a well-organized, entertaining show year aft er year. It’s a testament to the dedicati on of all involved and, most importantly, to the fantasti c care that the animals receive. They are the true stars of the show, aft er all, and everyone works ti relessly to keep them healthy and happy and ready to wow us all once again.2014 also marks the fourth ti me that the Ford Center will host the event. Despite the traditi on of Roberts Stadium, it’s been smooth sailing at the new venue with no decrease in att endance. If anything, the Ford Center has been a breath of fresh air - literally. The smells normally associated with the circus have been tampered quite noti ceably by the climate-controlled atmosphere, and everyone – including the animals – seems to breathe easier when it’s show ti me. Marketi ng Director Brian Ball is thrilled with the relati onship between the circus and the Ford Center. “[They] are very gracious to us and have worked with us hand in hand since the move,” he says. “The way that we can set up the circus in the venue is very cohesive, and it’s just been a very pleasant experience for us.” Over the last several years, the Hadi Shrine Circus has

clearly upped its game, changing with the ti mes to incorporate more special eff ects, contemporary music and dramati c, dazzling lights, bringing more pop to traditi onal acts such as jugglers, acrobats and lion tamers. The show is three full hours of non-stop entertainment and heart-stopping acti on – all family-friendly. And the circus conti nues to work with rescue dogs, intent on setti ng a good example. “We’re focused on being leaders in the community – and not just with the rescue

dogs but by helping to take care of other animals, too,” Ball says. With all of the hard work and planning that goes into the circus, it’s no wonder that generati ons of families and performers keep coming back. Ball could not be more appreciati ve. “We conti nue to love having the support of the tri-state area and the Evansville community. The circus keeps the Hadi Shriners alive, and we want everyone to come out and conti nue to enjoy the great family entertainment that we provide every Thanksgiving.” – Thomas Ellis

INCREDIBLE HADI SHRINE CIRCUS FACTS:• It’s the longest running, conti nuous circus in North America• It’s the ONLY remaining circus with a live orchestra• More than three million people have att ended the circus• It’s one of the only remaining three ring circuses• It has more clowns and elephants than any other circus

he 2014-15 EPO season opened with a groundbreaking ensemble and a reimagining of the Rolling

Stones. Now, it’s time to honor our heroes. The freewheeling Project Trio energized the opening night audience in September with a high octane mix of jazz, hip-hop and rock in a classical context. Backed by the EPO, they displayed a level of synchronicity rarely seen. It was a jaw-dropping, inspiring performance that kick-started the new season off in a big way. Simply put, they were a tough act to follow. But if any production was up to the task, it was the internationally acclaimed Rolling Stones tribute, “Satisfaction.” Check the archives, but odds are the music of the world’s greatest rock and roll band had not previously been performed with a symphony on the Victory stage. Part of the EPO Pops series, “Satisfaction” combined the raw power of the Stones’

guitar-driven, bluesy sound with the majesty of the area’s most technically gifted orchestra. All the classics were delivered faithfully but with added strength and precision. Mick and Keith would most certainly have approved, and the crowd on that late October night walked away more than satisfied. And now it’s time for the third performance of the new season – a complete change of pace. In recognition of all the soldiers that have put their lives on the line to defend this country, the EPO presents Britten’s War Requiem…A Tribute to Our Veterans at the Victory Theatre on November 15. This timely performance is a musical thank you to those that have served, a somber production befitting the epic struggle between war and peace. Composed by Benjamin Britten, the piece was commissioned over 50 years ago to mark the consecration of

the new Coventry Cathedral in England, built after the original fourteenth-century structure was destroyed in a WWII bombing raid. Truly haunting, War Requiem is made even more so by the inclusion of texts from the Latin Mass with shocking depictions of battle by Wilfred Owen, a British poet who died in WWI. Adding even more gravity to the performance, the EPO will be joined by a children’s chorus as well as soloists, chorus and chamber orchestra. – Thomas Ellis

Sponsored by Old National Bank, the show starts at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit victorytheatre.com.War Requiem is the EPO’s contribution to the global commemoration of the 100th anniversary of WWI and is offered in partnership with “Evansville Remembers,” a city-wide project which honors our veterans and remembers the atrocities inflicted in WWII.

Just Rennie’s began in 2003 when Marla Rennie started Just Rennie’s Catering on her own. Later, Marla’s husband Doug Rennie, a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute and an executive chef, joined Marla to help grow the business. Doug and Marla bought a building in downtown Evansville and transformed it into a Tuscan wine room/bistro. In addition to this great location, catering services can also be provided at a number of area venues, as well as at Just Rennie’s clients’ own locations. In 2008, Marla created Just Rennie’s Cookie Company in the building next door to the catering company. Originating with mail order gift boxes, the cookie company now offers take-out lunches of fresh deli salads, sandwiches, pasta, gourmet coffees and baked goods. However, Just Rennie’s Cookie Company is best known for its unique mound-of-dough cookies. With the addition of Pastry Chef Terry Spindler in 2014, Just Rennie’s continues to expand its dessert offerings. Open Mon-Fri 9 a.m-4 p.m. Download our smartphone app.

Hagedorns Tavern2037 W. Franklin St., Evansville812-423-0794

Over the last few months, you have read about our great variety of appetizers, sandwiches (including our famous Brain sandwich) and barbeque. But the Hagedorns tradition of homemade cooking extends to our desserts as well. One of the real highlights of the dessert menu is the homemade bread pudding with butterscotch schnapps topping. Each spoonful is an absolute delight as the taste explodes across every inch of your mouth. This sinfully good dessert pairs perfectly with a hot cup of fresh coffee to make the taste last even longer. And for those who enjoy a little variety, maple whiskey sauce is also available as a topping and every bit as delicious. Of course, don’t forget about our double chocolate pie, always a favorite and every bit as rich and savory as it sounds. Finally, you really can’t leave without trying our deep fried dill spears. They are uniquely Hagedorns!

Western Rib-Eye was built by Harold Nix in 1975. Brothers David and Dan Nix came back into the family business in the mid 80s after pursuing other careers, eventually taking control of the restaurant in 1995. It was at that time that ribs were added to the menu and the name of the business was updated to Western Rib-Eye & Ribs. “Growing up in the business has been a natural for both of us,” David Nix explains. “Our different personalities and backgrounds complement one another.” David has managed the restaurant for over 20 years while Dan has experience managing other area establishments. Over the last 39 years, the restaurant has gained a reputation for the highest quality food. “We have traditionally been known for our great steaks and our famous all-you-can-eat salad bar,” David says. “Our great ribs have become very popular also. Along with those items, I love our grilled pork chops. We also have chicken dishes, fish and lobster.” But at the end of the day, David is a steak man, plain and simple. “My heart lies with our New York Strip Steak,” he says. “We buy only the best beef, and we have our

own family seasoning that gives our steaks an excellent flavor you cannot find anywhere else.” Citing “eating” as a favorite pastime, David is all too happy to act as quality control for the restaurant. Western Rib-Eye & Ribs’ food may be out of this world, but what really sets the restaurant apart is the staff. “We have a number of staff members that have been here over 10 years, 20 years and even 30 years,” David explains. “Our customers have been seeing the same people for years. But then again, I come back to our consistently great food.” Patrons also enjoy perusing the pictures hanging on the walls that represent the history of Evansville. “We get compliments on them daily,” David says. “The 19 foot mural that is in the lobby [is] of the Evansville waterfront around 1905.” In truth, it’s the accumulation of all these things – the staff, the atmosphere and the food – that keeps people coming back (and has made the restaurant a perennial Reader’s Choice award winner). The philosophy behind the restaurant is refreshingly simple. “We make everything the best that we can,” David says. “You cannot have a great

steak if you don’t start with high quality beef in the first place. We put the same amount of effort and attention into every other item on the menu.” That includes their salad bar which David describes as “second to none.” Clearly, all the hard work is appreciated by the restaurant’s many loyal customers who truly enjoy the great dining experience that Western Rib-Eye & Ribs offers – right down to the cleanliness of the restaurant. Every year the Nix brothers have a “Customer Appreciation Celebration.” This year, it runs from November 6th through the 16th. “We always look for something that we can give our customers at an exceptional value while still maintaining the quality they have come to expect,” David explains. “This year we are offering a 10oz New York Strip Steak for only $14.99, and it does include our Famous Salad Bar, a choice of a side, and hot bread. We are only offering this for 10 days. It is our way of saying Thank You to our loyal customers.” – Nikki Davis

Western Rib-Eye & Ribs is located at 1401 N. Boeke Rd., 812-476-5405. For more info, visit westernribeye.com.

or the past 15 years, Koodie Hoo’s has been serving up a lot of delicious grub and tasty drinks with a large side of Texan hospitality. The name itself – literally a gathering call – appears

to have worked like a charm. Open Monday through Thursday unti l 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday unti l 3 a.m., they have something for everyone aged 21 and over. Koodie Hoo’s serves up amazing appeti zers and entrees and boasts a full bar for nightlife, including a DJ and karaoke every other Friday. Not just your typical bar fare, the menu includes a host of Texas-sized platt ers and sandwiches. Favorites include frog legs, ribeyes and even homemade desserts. Upon arrival, it was clear that Koodie Hoo’s is steeped in traditi on. I was greeted by their mascot, Chief Running Beer, an assortment of southwest-themed decorati ons and chipper country/bluegrass tunes. The large bar and high ceilings in the dining area are signs that they have to accommodate large crowds seeking more than just beer and peanuts. Aft er situati ng myself in a comfortable red booth, I was treated to a variety of dishes suggested by owner Sue Yeida. The fi rst dish served, the very popular and aptly-named appeti zer, Texas Tornado, was a heaping pile of spiral potato chips smothered in nacho cheese, smoked bacon, fresh tomatoes and green onion with a side of ranch. They say that “everything’s bigger in Texas,” and the second appeti zer served, the Hot ‘n’ Spicy Onion Petals, was clear proof. The descripti on of these fl avorful deep-fried goodies is no joke! The breading alone has a fi ery kick which is paired with a chipotle ranch dipping sauce. I was then greeted with the Hog Wing Platt er. I had to ask, “What exactly IS a hog wing?” The tender, smoked, bone-in pork shanks did not disappoint. It’s served with butt ery Texas toast and a homemade twice-baked potato fi lled with a hearty mix of bacon, cheese, butt er and chives and topped with paprika. This is defi nitely a meal befi tti ng a cowboy. Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying Koodie Hoo’s famous catf ish. The sandwich, served on your choice of sesame seed bun or Texas toast, comes with the works: toppings, potato chips and a side of tartar sauce. Light and fl aky, this is the best catf ish I’ve ever had. Owner Sue Yeida is rightly proud. “We’ve had catf ish for 15 years and people come from all around just for that,” she says. When I inquired about the ingredients of the batt er, she just smiled coyly, put

her hands on her hips and responded, “It’s our own recipe.” No using this secret recipe at home. You’ll just have to go try it. About 16 miles west of Evansville in Mt. Vernon, Koodie Hoo’s is “close enough to be convenient, but far enough to get away.” So take a short trip and see what the place “where friends gather round” has to off er. – Whitney Patt erson

“We want to bring back a surreal experience of growing up in southern Indiana,” 36-year-old chef and business partner Andrew Wiggers says when discussing the culinary vision of his new pop-up restaurant, Woodbine Supper Club. Together, with fellow chef and partner, Blake Kollker, the two are shaping the future of local dining by looking back to a ti me when people lived off the land. It’s a concept known as Modern Farm & Forage – using local, organic ingredients that were available to our grandparents (from paw paws to persimmons and beyond) to create delicious meals today. While both partners are quite proud of their heritage, Wiggers, in parti cular, has a long history here, his family having emigrated from Germany to Evansville generati ons ago. “We’ve been in this city as long as we’ve been in this country,” he says. Growing up on the east side, he was surrounded by gardens and “always spent a lot of ti me running around in the woods, picking weeds and eati ng them – fi nding out what things tasted delicious.” Those childhood experiences stuck with him through his teenage years and into his early twenti es when he worked at various restaurants, from fast food joints to brew pubs, acquiring valuable cooking knowledge along the way. But the idea to combine his burgeoning skills with his foraging past was sti ll a ways off .

Just as Wiggers was discovering his culinary talents, he headed to Florida to pursue an audio engineering degree. He spent a number of years recording bands and living a nomadic lifestyle, shutt ling from Orlando to Nashville to Atlanta and back to Evansville. Burnt out and bored, he connected with an old friend who had att ended culinary school and was employed at a fi ne restaurant. Wiggers came on board and quickly became more serious about the profession. “Seeing what could be done at really high-end places sparked something in me,” he says. “So, I really went to work trying to learn how to do things like transform food, change textures and make things surreal.” In 2008, Wiggers landed at Evansville Country Club where he met Kollker, a former Iron Chef contestant. They set about improving the quality of the food, developing a friendship in the process. Aft er a few years, the two left to start separate business ventures but both harbored the dream of bringing back the “taste of southern Indiana.” Hanging out one night, the idea for Woodbine emerged. “We decided to put together a dinner, to just do one and see how it goes,” Wiggers says. “No one had been doing pop-up restaurants in Evansville, but it’s how a lot of places get started.” They hosted the inaugural dinner this year at the old American Legion on the west side, using social media to spread the word. The success of the event led to a second dinner hosted at Kirby’s Private Dining, another sell-out. A third dinner at Kirby’s and numerous private events are ahead. The farm to mouth cuisine of Woodbine dinners has att racted a big following and Kollker and Wiggers hope to turn the concept into a brick and mortar operati on at some point, a more casual place. As Wiggers acknowledges, “most people can’t aff ord to swing $100 dinners.” Sti ll, it’s an experience that is worth every penny, and every ingredient is local, a point he wants to drive home. “We’ve got some of the best farmlands in the world here that can produce some of the most delicious food. We just want to honor that and be really proud of where we’re from.” – Thomas Ellis

In associati on with The Best Day Ever and presented by SFF Concierge Service, Auti sm-N-Living Colors will be a night to remember at the Evansville Museum on November 8. The prevalence of Auti sm has made the job of spreading awareness a top priority. A relati ve mystery for many years, the diagnosis is slowly gaining understanding; it’s being discussed openly in the media and shows like NBC’s Parenthood are featuring auti sti c characters. But despite the progress, there’s sti ll so much more to do, and that’s why an event like Auti sm-N-Living Colors is so important. The event will feature Josh Berkau from the Auti sm Society of Indiana and a fantasti c line-up of entertainment, including spoken word poetry by Tameka Warren and performances by Sassquad from the Shannon School of Dance and local jazz musician Monte Skelton and singer Shelly Long. A jazz band will also be on hand as well as a food and cash bar. And when the evening comes to a close at the Museum, everyone will head over to the Vault at 11 p.m. for the aft er party. The main event starts at 8 p.m. but don’t miss the semi-formal cocktail hour at 7 p.m. Show up looking sharp and ready for a good ti me. – Thomas Ellis

For more info, call 812-518-2154.The Museum is located at 411 SE Riverside. The Vault is located at 329 Main St.

iquor Locker’s largest locati on yet just opened at the intersecti on of Highway 41 and Riverside Drive. You can’t miss it. Between the massive electronic

sign high in the sky and the big, bright yellow building, the new Liquor Locker is guaranteed to get your att enti on. But it’s not just your average superstore. Lots of thought, planning and hard work went into the design to ensure that it becomes the most successful Liquor Locker yet. There’s a lot to like about the new locati on, including a walk-in cigar humidor featuring brands such as Acid, Arturo Fuente, Rocky Patel, Nub, Don Thomas, Oliva, Punch and many more. And as always, you will fi nd hundreds of craft and import beers along with an outstanding selecti on of bourbons, including many of Liquor Locker’s hand-selected barrel bourbons such as Evan Williams, Eagle Rare, Russell’s Reserve, Kentucky Spirit, Henry McKenna and Old Forester – just to name a few. And there’s so much more. The new locati on has over 350 wines available, many of which are highly rated and highly sought aft er the world over, not to menti on an enti re secti on devoted specifi cally to 90+ point wines. And if you sti ll can’t fi nd what you’re looking for, they will make every eff ort to special order it. The Riverside locati on will be the benchmark for what wine selecti ons will look like in all Liquor Locker stores in the very near future. Ulti mately, Liquor Locker’s goal is to become the tri-state’s wine desti nati on and make the whole process of shopping for wine both fun and educati onal.

Any wine-related questi ons? Feel free to contact Chris Hedges, Liquor Locker’s own in-house wine expert at [email protected].

Christmas is coming early to downtown Evansville with two family-friendly productions at the Old National Events Plaza. Part of the Broadway in Evansville Series, Cirque Dreams Holidaze arrives on December 2nd followed by Frosty, the opening production of the 2014-15 Centre’d on Kids Children’s Broadway Series, on December 3rd. Both shows are packed full of holiday cheer and guaranteed to get the whole family in the Christmas spirit. Now in its fifth year of touring, Cirque Dreams Holidaze “re-imagines the holiday season with sparkle and suspense.” Leave reality behind and enter a fantastical world filled with gingerbread men flipping mid-air, toy soldiers marching on thin wires, puppets dancing and reindeers soaring high above. The high-flying production is replete with brilliant costumes and seasonal music to accompany the winter wonderland – a snowy landscape surrounded by gigantic gifts, colossal candy canes and 30 foot towering soldiers. It’s a night of entertainment to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. And be sure to bring the kids back the next day to see Frosty. Sponsored by Bunny Bread, the show tells the tale of a young orphan named Billy who discovers magic in a stolen hat when he places it on a snowman’s head…and the snowman comes to life! Recommended for grades K-5. – Johnny Fletcher

For ticket info, visit centre.evansvillegis.com. Show times: Cirque Dreams Holidaze (12/2, 7:30 p.m.), Frosty (12/3, 9:15 a.m. & 12 p.m.)

Someti mes it seems as though people are quick to point out the negati ve aspects of Evansville. What I do know is that when someone points out something they don’t like about Evansville, they’re going to fi nd the same problems in most every other city. Over the years, I have lived in Indy, Louisville and New Orleans. I had the opportunity to move back home a year ago, and I feel very blessed to be back here again. It’s only a 10 minute drive to work! In a big city, unless you live within one mile of your offi ce it’s going to be 30 minutes minimum. I live downtown within walking distance of several restaurants and bars. There is even a bar in the basement of the building I live in! My girlfriend and I really enjoy walking to the Ford Center and att ending every Aces and IceMen game we can make it to. However, I do regret being so close to the arena when Disney on Ice is in town… I love this city and I am able to share a part of it with millions of others. I am the Sales Director for Carson’s Brewery. We stamp “Evansville, IN” on all of our products that we sell across fi ve states (so far). Drinking beer is in my job descripti on. That sounds like something that would be on a bumper sti cker,

but for me it is just part of the job – a really awesome part of the job. I like to embrace the positi ve att ributes of Evansville. We can always nitpick and fi nd the bad. I prefer to look for the good. It really is a beauti ful place to live; not too big, not too small. Whether or not I will live here forever is something I cannot predict. But I do know that no matt er where I am, or where I am living, the answer to “Where are you from?” will always be “I am from Evansville Indiana.” - Jason Elliott

ome arti sts spend years studying at the university level, gradually improving their skills over ti me, while others are seemingly born with a paint brush in hand, ready to create. Cathy Johnson, part owner of Rosé and Monet, the

area’s only paint and sip business, falls into the latt er category. Mostly self-taught, the grandmother of two has been involved in art all her life. “I wanted to do it rather than read about it,” she says. Though originally from the tri-state, Johnson spent a number of years in Denver, “a prett y artsy area” with lots of arts-based organizati ons and plenty of creati ve opportuniti es. “I had the advantage of being able to take workshops and seminars from some of the top arti sts in the U.S.,” she says. “I just love that kind of thing.” In terms of style, Johnson considers herself more of a realist, but her talent is versati le. “I can prett y well do just about anything that people ask,” she says. Not surprisingly, Monet is a parti cular favorite. “My forte is watercolors, and his work just blows me away whenever I go to a museum and get to see one of his pieces.” Johnson’s fascinati on with watercolors began in earnest out in Colorado. “I had been painti ng with oils at the ti me but went on a three day retreat that focused on watercolors,” she explains. “I had the same excitement that I felt many years earlier when I fi rst started painti ng.”

While Johnson counts Monet’s work as a big inspirati on and admires many U.S. arti sts, she doesn’t cite anyone or any movement as a parti cular infl uence. “With art, it’s just being able to see and observe,” she says. “Someti mes you’ll be riding along and there will be a bunch of weeds, and you’ll see all the diff erent colors, and it’s like ‘oh my gosh, look at that’; whereas somebody else might not have even noti ced. When arti sts talk about things like that, it kind of sounds ‘out there’ but maybe we all are.” Over ten years ago, Johnson moved back to her home base of Illinois, to the rural surroundings of Palesti ne. It was an art-deprived community at the ti me, so she opened a gallery and studio and planned to take it easy. But aft er a friend convinced her to stage a paint and sip event that “exploded on Facebook” and drew a huge crowd, a business was born; Johnson promptly canceled her reti rement. Last February, Johnson and her husband decided it made sense to move to Evansville – both for business reasons and to be closer to family. They opened Rosé and Monet on the east side and quickly built a loyal following. “It’s just fun,” Johnson says. “There are so many people out there that haven’t painted but just want to try. This is a real approachable way. The instructors take you step-by-step, almost down to the basics. It’s not inti midati ng at all; it’s relaxing.” And it certainly doesn’t hurt that you can sip your favorite beer or wine while working on your masterpiece. Rosé and Monet has Johnson’s full att enti on, so her own arti sti c output has slowed. But she’s sti ll available for commissions, and if you come in to the shop, you will fi nd a number of her works lying around, including her popular rendering of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Meanwhile, the business conti nues to grow. “We are very happy with Rosé and Monet. It’s like a litt le painti ng party with your family and friends.” – Thomas Ellis

Rosé and Monet is located at 4706 Vogel Rd. 812-213-6400. For more info and to sign up for a Rosé and Monet event, visit roseandmonet.com.

t is 3:15 p.m. on a gloomy Sunday aft ernoon in downtown Evansville and singer-songwriter Kati e Watt s is playing to a small but adoring crowd at Penny Lane Coff ehouse. Suddenly, mid-song, a police car whizzes by outside, sirens blaring. The commoti on inevitably interrupts the

fl ow of the song, but she doesn’t miss a beat, turning to the window behind her and quipping, “I didn’t do it!” before resuming the chorus. Laughter erupts from the gathering of friends and patrons, a moment that perfectly captures the yin and yang of a Watt s performance. The 30-year-old Kentucky nati ve is very serious about her music career but sti ll has a sense of humor about it all. In fact, her between-song banter is oft en as enjoyable as her gorgeous vocals – the latt er delivered with more than a hint of twang, especially when the melodies soar. Hearing Watt s shift eff ortlessly from classic rock to indie pop to folk-based original songs and even Disney, it’s no wonder that she’s so in demand, positi oned at a fork in the musical road. “I’m absolutely teetering right there,” Watt s says. “I’ve played at almost every venue that you can play here, including weddings, graduati ons and private parti es. It’s to the point where I sti ll love what I do – and I do love this town for what it has given me – but honestly, the next step is to invest in some mode of transportati on like a big van and go explore; whatever happens, happens.” With a network of friends and fellow musicians in most every state not to menti on Watt s’ reputati on as a performer, booking gigs is not a problem. The plan is to mass-produce a “real CD” in the coming months to

take on the road and sell at shows, though Watt s is realisti c about her expectati ons. ”It’s every musician’s dream to be recognized for their original material, but it’s prett y hard to do,” she explains. “But if I only get recognized for my vocals, I’ll take it. You can call me a sell-out, whatever you want.” Considering that Watt s completed her fi rst original song just six years ago when she picked the guitar back up aft er a long musical hibernati on, her repertoire is impressive. Highlights include “Litt le Man,” a plainti ve song about her adorable (and oft en feisty) nephew, “Riding on a Lion,” a celebrati on of new love and the self-explanatory “Happiness.” Aft er a period of darkness punctuated with health issues and fi nancial diffi culty, Watt s has come out of it all with a new perspecti ve and an irrepressible smile that radiates when she covers “Here Comes the Sun” midway through her Penny Lane set. Later, when she performs the self-penned “Sh*tt y Litt le Car,” the minor key progression is eff ecti vely jarring as Watt s revisits those earlier, troubled ti mes. Her ability to sing about both hope and despair so convincingly keeps drawing in new fans and keeps the old ones coming back. And whether there are a handful of people in the crowd or hundreds makes no diff erence to Watt s. “It’s more about how much the crowd is feeling the songs with me,” she says. “If they’re just as passionate about the music as I am, then it will be a great show. We feed off each other.” Music is a full-ti me gig for Watt s, Wednesday through Sunday each week; she hasn’t had a day job in nearly four years. Clearly, there’s no shortage of opportuniti es here, but it’s ti me for Watt s to move on to the next phase of her career: conquering the rest of the US and beyond. “That’s my goal,” she says. “It’s a big goal, but it’s going to happen. There’s no way I’m not going to let it happen.” – Thomas EllisFollow Kati e Watt s on Facebook.

Rati ngs are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rati ng a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rati ng a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Daniel Knight • 5Finally, I was asked to review one of my favorite brews ever. Breakfast Stout pours up prett y much opaque black. The rich, thick, beige head is minimal but lingers throughout. The nose is forthright with clear notes of coff ee and chocolate. According to Founders, it’s brewed with fl aked oats, bitt er and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coff ee. Tasti ng this benchmark stout, there is no doubti ng these claims. It’s smooth and rich, gently warming and amazingly drinkable. Proceed with cauti on, though. It’s 8.30% ABV and begs to be enjoyed.

Paul Bragin • 4A tan head tops this opaque black stout. The smells of coff ee and roasted malt fi ll the nose. The initi al sip of the beer tastes like regular stout, but the fi nish has hints of coff ee followed by chocolate. The beer boasts an abundance of hops, but the other fl avors balance the hop presence very well. It would pair well with desserts or as an alternati ve to Bloody Marys or mimosas for Sunday brunch.Jabez Marti nez • 4.5This is a dark/black beer. When you can’t see through the glass, it has to be good. It had a heavy coff ee aroma. It was very heavy on the coff ee side in fl avor but light on the chocolate. I would have given it a 5 if it had more chocolate fl avor. I haven’t had much from Founders, but this one was good.

Daniel Knight • 3This is a prett y good imperial stout. I’m saying that right up front because it’s being reviewed alongside Founders “benchmark imperial stout.” Just saying… It pours up very dark, almost black, yet seems a litt le watery considering the genre it’s placed in. It produces a peti te beige head. The aroma is mostly coff ee. Nice. The taste follows the nose with a bit more complexity. There’s possibly some cocoa or oaky-ness there as well. Overall, it’s a good “stout experience,” and I wouldn’t ever turn one down.

Paul Bragin • 3A thick tan head forms on this beer when poured into an English pub glass. The beer is as black as coal. The scent contains elements of Haiti an coff ee used in brewing the beer and roasted malt. The taste features an overwhelming coff ee fl avor. The beer ages in oak barrels before bott ling. It would be interesti ng to see the same beer with oak aging, but without coff ee. A scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream might improve this beer.

Jabez Marti nez • 4This one was much like the Founders Breakfast Stout, but you could taste the bourbon in it. It is a black colored beer with a coff ee fl avor. I am not much of a bourbon fan, but this one was prett y good. You could taste the bourbon, but it was not overbearing. I couldn’t taste any chocolate fl avor, but then again, this is a bourbon fl avors beer.

Daniel Knight • 4Rambler is a tasty, very drinkable Red IPA that’s available from September through December. It pours up a clear, reddish amber color with a beige one fi nger head that sti cks around. The aroma is malty, with pine, bread, caramel and resin. The taste is a well-balanced malts and hops experience with a touch of spices and fruiti ness. Folks who aren’t accustomed to drinking Pale Ales and IPAs will consider this one hoppy. I’d certainly call it a full fl avor brew but overall, I’d call it light to medium-bodied.

Paul Bragin • 4.5A thick, off -white head forms on this beer and never quite disappears. The beer below has a deep amber color. A hop profi le of fruit and pine rounds out the scent. The taste starts out a litt le tart, but then the pine notes from the hops come to the front with some spice on the fi nish. This seasonal is only available from September to December, so fans of hoppy beers should get it as soon as possible.

Jabez Marti nez • 4This is a clear, copper colored beer. I liked the 6.7% ABV. This one was prett y good as IPA’s go. The hops fl avors were not that overbearing that you couldn’t pick up other fl avors in this beer. It had a caramel taste but also a litt le fruity. This is a seasonal release so you bett er buy it when you fi nd it.

Daniel Knight • 2.5This brew pours up a cloudy, dark yellow color and produces a bubbly white, two fi nger long lasti ng head and reincarnates as moderate lacing. The cloudiness is a result of its unpasteurized and unfi ltered brewing style. Rye isn’t one of my favorite beer ingredients but like most rye ales, it actually only represents a small porti on of the grain in this brew. A litt le goes a long way. The nose is subtle and I noti ce mostly rye and hops. The fl avor leaves me short for words in a

not-so-good way. The hops (don’t know what kind), yeast and rye create a fl avor that is strangely bitt er and doesn’t call me back for more.

Paul Bragin • 4.25A decent white head crowns this straw-hued beer. Citrusy hop notes like grapefruit and lemon dominate the nose on this ale, but some pine scents also seem to appear. The hop fl avor becomes more balanced when drinking this beer due to the presence of barley and rye malts. Hop lovers should defi nitely try this one. This could pair well with lighter dishes like salads as well as heavier foods like pork and German cuisine.

Jabez Marti nez • 3 This is a cloudy, amber colored beer. It had a heavy rye fl avor, sort of bready. It was also somewhat spicy, almost like it had some pepper in it. I am not a big rye beer fan – this is just a personal thing – but it was OK for the average drinker.

November 15 – EPO presents Britt en’s War Requiem (A Tribute to Our Veterans)VICTORY THEATREBenjamin Britt en’s War Requiem was fi rst performed on May 30, 1962, and was commissioned to mark the consecrati on of the new Coventry Cathedral in England, which was built aft er the original fourteenth century structure was destroyed in a WWII bombing raid. More than 50 years aft er its premiere, Britt en’s War Requiem remains one of the most lyrical, haunti ng and poignant choral works performed today. The Orchestra is joined by soloists, chorus, chamber orchestra and children’s chorus to portray Benjamin Britt en’s musical imagery of war and peace. The composer created this masterpiece by weaving together texts from the Lati n Mass with shocking depicti ons of batt le by Wilfred Owen, a Briti sh poet who died in WWI. This performance is the EPO’s contributi on to the global commemorati on of the 100th anniversary of WWI and is off ered in partnership with “Evansville Remembers,” a city-wide project which honors our veterans and remembers the atrociti es infl icted.

“But what’s your REAL job?” If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me that, I wouldn’t need a job at all, fictional or otherwise. Honestly, though, people ask me variations of this question every time I tell them I manage musicians (who, of course, all receive the same adamant query about their occupation). When I tell them I bartend... “Don’t you have a degree? When are you going to use it?” But now that I’m also writing, I get this reaction: “Oh, so you finally got a real job!” Face-palm. The bottom line is that any service performed that is rewarded with payment of any sort is indeed a job. Just because I don’t put on a suit every morning, get into my Mercedes and drive to a 9 to 5 office job doesn’t mean my career has no worth. Maybe a real job is simply a job that you love – a job that allows you to express yourself, help others and maybe sometimes pay for extravagant things like lights and water. So from now on when someone uses the term “real job,” I’m going to assume they mean the job I have in my dreams where I get paid in butter beer for riding unicorns to slay werewolves. Until I achieve those dreams, you can find me here, getting paid to convince you that my job exists. Signed, Whitney Patterson, Jerk of All Trades

Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow (PG 13)Warner BrosLearning (and re-learning) to become hardcore instead of just walking onscreen as such might be diffi cult for some acti on stars. This is not the case for Tom Cruise, whose performance as Major William Cage is completely in earnest. An extraterrestrial force has invaded Earth, and Cage has been sent to join the frontlines despite his history of only civilian acti viti es. With a cast starring the likes of Bill Paxton as tough-as-nails Master Sergeant Farrell and Emily Blunt (whose fi nal departure from typecasti ng doesn't go unnoti ced) as the over-shadowed heroine Rita Vrataski, it's like watching other people play a sci-fi video game, full of tentacled aliens (Mimickers) and a twist on the ti red infecti on-based apocalypti c re-runs. The graphics are impressive, and the plot is solid, although heavily conceptual. Of course, what would a Hollywood movie be without the back-burner love story and the quest for the meaning of it all? Doug Liman, director of The Bourne Identi ty and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, appears comfortable enough with the genre. Getti ng to the point may feel like an issue at ti mes, but it's energeti c with excellent acti ng and interesti ng concepts.

Obvious Child (R)LionsgateJenny Slate’s soul-bearing, brilliant performance as the crass and loveable stand-up comedienne Donna Stern is quite a change-up for the actress best known for voice-work and small TV roles. As Stern, she tackles the inevitable struggles of learning to be an independent adult, faces a diffi cult break-up, loses her long-term day job and ends up in a less-than-ideal situati on aft er a night of romance with a total stranger. It's poignant and uncompromisingly confrontati onal - much like Stern’s comedy acts - and she celebrates her growth through every uncomfortable moment of it. With newcomer Jake Lacy as her unexpected, yet reluctantly adored "like" interest Max, cameos by comedian David Cross and TV favorite Richard Kind as Dad, and a brutally frank

supporti ng performance by Gaby Hoff man (where has she been all this ti me?) as Donna's best friend Nellie, this isn't just your typical

indie coming of age fi lm. Instead, it's a brief and laughter-though-tears insight into the more previously self-aware life of an almost-thirty woman with beauti ful and personal cinematography. Writt en and directed by fl edgling fi lmmaker Gillian Robespierre, this Sundance Festi val award-winner is more about the celebrati on of womanhood than the controversial issues it confronts head-on with no agenda except honesty. - Whitney Patt erson

Olivia JeanBathtub Love KillingsThird Man Records

Olivia Jean is a one-woman show. Long a session musician for Third Man Records (aka

Jack White), she goes front and center for Bathtub Love Killings, handling the bulk of the recording to create an album that both looks back and leans forward. The old school producti on may be at odds with today’s pop perfecti on but it perfectly accentuates Olivia Jean’s idiosyncrati c yet wholly hummable songwriti ng, especially when she touches on more contemporary infl uences like Sleigh Bells (“Mistakes”). Elsewhere, tracks like “Green Honeycreeper,” “Haunt Me,” “Excuses” and “Catf ight” acknowledge her obvious affi nity for the 60s and 70s, parti cularly the classic country era of strong female singers. Olivia Jean is a rarity in music today: a woman who calls ALL the shots.

CharisBrand NewNkosi Records

A local, faith-based hip hop arti st with a staggering lyrical fl ow, Charis is a recent additi on to

the Nkosi Records family. Aft er years of bad decisions, including chronic drug use, this young man has turned his life around and now dedicates himself to creati ng music with a positi ve message that refl ects his newfound place in the community. Brand New is just fi ve tracks long, but Charis crams an album’s worth of words into the mix with cameos from Kriss and Deante Ramon. The lines go by at warp-speed and the beats kick in on cue, pumped up with sturdy producti on by Canon, Geeda and Swade. This is hip hop for the body AND the brain. – Johnny Fletcher

The Tom Drury

Quartet

BAND FORMATION/PERSONNEL: The Tom Drury Quartet (TDQ) was formed two years ago because of a request from Harry and Linda George for their House Concerts Series. This series is held in their living room and brings the best local jazz music together with a group of passionate jazz lovers. Tom Drury was asked to perform, and he asked the other musicians that make up the TDQ to play with him. The rest is history. Tom Drury is the Director of Music at Trinity United Methodist Church and Instructor of Music at USI. Erick Scales (sax) is a composer and arranger and the current head of the USI Jazz Band. Mike Rodenberg (bass) also plays with the Fabulous Rodenberg Boys. Pat Moore (drums) has played with bands both big and small and owned a local music store for many years.RECORDINGS/INFLUENCES: 2014 saw the release of the band’s debut CD, By George, recorded and engineered by Patrick Preston at 77 Recording Studios in Evansville. Of the 10 tunes, seven are original compositi ons by Tom Drury. His style is reminiscent of Thelonious Monk. By George is a testi mony to the current renaissance of the straight ahead style and will take you back to when this music was at the vanguard of the New Fronti er.The CD is on sale at Barnes & Noble, East Penny Lane Coff eehouse, USI Bookstore, H & H Music, Moore Music, Winzerwald Winery Tasti ng Room and the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: The TDQ’s next performance will be on Sunday, November 23, at Barnes & Noble at 2 p.m. For more informati on, contact Paul Matti ngly at 812-484-5947 or email [email protected]

The Tom Drury Quartet would like to thank:

My Brightest Diamond This is My Hand Asthmati c Kitt y Records Shara Worden, aka My Brightest Diamond, is living proof that there is no ceiling for musical creati vity. With the recent release of her fourth studio album under this moniker,

she makes no concessions to radio-friendly pop redundancy. As a former backup vocalist for Sufj an Stevens and guest member of The Decemberists, MBD is also a multi -instrumentalist with an operati c voice and penchant for the avant garde. “Pressure” is a percussion-heavy tune that instantly sets the tone for the enti re album. Maybe she wants us to hear and feel her art, but mostly there is a sense of urgent necessity: “So bright I cannot hide them/ so heavy I cannot mine/ all of this pressure’s making diamonds/ so wild I cannot tame.” The ti tle track gives listeners a sense of privilege when gift ed with such a demanding proclamati on of introspecti on. Not enti rely self-seeking, anyone can relate to the jazzy painti ng of the dichotomy of human nature in “Lover Killer.” And of course, an album is almost incomplete without an agony-fi lled heartache anthem, so the dark, industrial feel of “I am not the Bad Guy” does just the trick without being mundane. MBD allows us to join in her whimsical and sensory-drenched journey; just don’t expect her to hold your hand.

Sea Oleena ShallowLefse Records

Some of the best songs come from the dark, hidden recesses of the most melancholy arti sts. For budding Sasketchewan-born musician Charlott e Loseth, the pain bleeds into beauti ful

release and perhaps - at least the illusion of - opportunity. A drasti c turn from prior beat-driven albums, Shallow is born of ambient vocals accompanied by fi lmy, piano-fl eshed instrumentals. With obvious infl uences from groups like Boards of Canada, there is a striking vulnerability akin to Sinead O’Connor, with the two twirling into a sort of Garbage on muscle relaxers... lots of them. “If I’m,” the album’s fi rst single, is a bit uncomfortable at fi rst, kind of like catching a glimpse of someone changing through their bedroom window. But eventually it sucks you in enough to feel like maybe it was your bedroom aft er all, with lyrics like “If I’m the corner that the dark backs into/ You’re the darkness that this corner clings to.” Likewise, the ti tle track could easily be the soundtrack to any coming-of-age indie fi lm, with layered instrumentals and eerily intangible vocals. By the end of the album, one might wonder whether they’d heard it before, but maybe the familiarity is in the collecti on of lullabies for young women rather than children. Although the general feel is gossamer, the murkiness and occasional gutt ural layering is more than enough to be interesti ng. Goosebumps and empathy run rampant; these genre-bending waves are anything but chill.

Foxygen…And Star PowerJagjaguwaIn 2013, Foxygen released one of the best albums of the year with We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace

and Magic. Now, they are back with their third off ering, …And Star Power. Where last year’s release saw Foxygen paying tribute to 60’s Dylan and the Kinks, ...And Star Power fi nds this California band aping 70’s Stones and Bowie. …And Star Power is a great album and the next logical step for a band that likes to live in the past.

StellaStellaRebore RecordsThere’s no other way to put it; Stella is one of Evansville’s best bands. On their self-ti tled debut, they

prove it. Stella off ers a good mix of slow, distorti on-drowned sounds that make you want to close your eyes and bask in the ambiance. But just when you think you’ve fi gured them out, they switch to hook-fi lled noise rock in a matt er of seconds. Stella frequently plays live shows at PG Gallery & Café and you can check them out online at rebore.bandcamp.com.

3D33PBack at ItSelf-releasedBack at It is the second album released this year by Evansville’s very own 3D33P. 3D33P is a hip hop trio consisti ng

of members Yung Kurt, Kokane Piñata and Iceberg. The lyrics are goofy and fun and the producti on is off the charts. Facade or not, 3D33P is making seriously good hip hop – something that Evansville is sincerely lacking. Thunder/DreamerLonesome MorningSelf-Released

Open the doors for the busloads of screaming teenage girls. What started out as a solo project for front man Steven Hamilton has become a gorgeous conglomerati on of local talent with members Alex Wallwork, Corey Greenfi eld and

Zach Zint. Even as self-described rock/americana, the guys aren’t too quick to tape up that box. There’s enough soul and blues there to give all the feels, and it’s a nice departure from the synchronized chants of the recent bearded-folk overload. “Give Me Kentucky,” the fi rst track, is a good insight into the vibe of the album, an angsty yet energeti c anthem for the midwest conditi on, where romances oft en get crushed by the lure of the big city. There’s an impossible garage-band nod; impossible because it would have to be the cleanest, most organized garage anyone has ever seen, with organs and pianos and such. The tone, layering, and crests of “What Would Your Lover Say?” picks up the pace just before “My Own Town” brings back the longing with vibrant picking and a bit of a shrug in Hamilton’s voice. If “House of Nothing” doesn’t get your head nodding, not much would; the sex-laden burst of soul is enough to make your cheeks burn. So go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief - these guys are sti ll together and performing locally.

WeezerEverything Will Be Alright in the EndRepublic Records

Whew, that was a close one. The ti tle of the album itself is a promise we weren’t really sure they could keep. We can try to pretend the last almost-decade didn’t exist and hope maybe the boys were off playing D&D instead of writi ng and

performing terrible music. Let’s rewind directly back to when we sti ll loved them and listen from a happy place. Okay, okay. To be fair, when a band has achieved such non-commercial accolades and a following to match, true fans should be able to forgive these massive hiccups. That being said, the road to redempti on is a cold one, and topping such early success is prett y much unfathomable. This album is a genuine att empt but may be too litt le, too late. “Ain’t Got Nobody” is Weezer enough, but kind of piti ful lyrically. “Cleopatra” and “Da Vinci” are acceptably riff -heavy, but the strangely pompous feel of “Eulogy for a Rock Band” and “Back to the Shack” kind of leave us wondering if maybe they’ve gott en a litt le too big for their britches. Yes, Rivers, the grown-ups begrudgingly accept your perfunctory yet well-deserved apology, if only because we sti ll are sti ll living in ‘94 in our own minds. Let’s hug it out. -Whitney Patt erson
