STEWARDSHIP - Opening the Door to Personal Commitment: (Continued from last week) Ministry Fairs bring people together who are already involved with various organizations. With proper planning, ministry fairs can attract many new Faces from the parish, bringing even more people together at one time. Ministry Fairs provide information about parish life that needs to be known by as many people as possible. The ultimate goal of a Ministry Fair is to increase the levels of ministries, participation and involvement. Making a commitment to the Church will help volunteers to grow in their relationship with God and with each other.

September 18, 2016

Dear Parish Family, Today is the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time and Youth Sunday at our parish. I welcome the young people who will speak at all the Masses this weekend. I hope more of our youth will hear the invitation made today and become part of our youth ministry. It has been a week now since our beautiful Dedication Mass and the renewed beauty of our church is so evident and will be there for generations to enjoy! The renewal work is now complete after several years of planning, fundraising, and renovation work. The cost of the renewed church is just over $400,000. As I mentioned in past bulletins, in pulpit announcements, at the We Are Living Stones receptions, and in the Q & A form that I prepared at the beginning of the restoration work in June one quarter of the proceeds of the sale of the Demarest Property has gone to the work in our church. The parish’s proceeds from the 211 donors to the We Are Living Stones campaign, a campaign that every parish in the Archdiocese was obliged to do ($74,000 received so far, with $105,000 yet to be received. Please continue to may your pledge payments.) will go toward the project, and the rest of the cost is coming from 20+ families, individuals, and groups who have made private donations to the project. NO MONEY FROM REGULAR SUNDAY COLLECTIONS WAS USED FOR THIS PROJECT! Once again I thank everyone who donated to help with the renewal of our church. Please continue to make the payments on your pledge, as we are counting on it to help pay for the beautiful work in our church. If you would like to make a private donation to help with the cost please see me. One of the aspects of the work just completed has been the restoration of the 4 stained glass windows in our Sanctuary. As you know the window frames were in such poor condition that the stained glass was in danger of falling out of the frames. New customized frames have been installed, the stained glass windows have been cleaned (they look like new!), and the water damage near the windows has been repaired. The cost of the Sanctuary windows repair is almost $35,000 of which almost $31,000 was paid through donations made by parishioners. Thank you! The

balance is being covered by our monthly maintenance and repairs collection – thank you! The remaining stained glass window frames in our church are in similar bad shape. I have had them caulked to ensure that they can last for some time to come. The cost to have that work done was over $12,000, which also came from our monthly repairs and maintenance fund. The cost to do further repairs on the windows is very high and will have to be addressed at some future time. Two items of concern were discovered during the renovation and were resolved: one was the 2 sets of lights that have not worked since before my arrival here. The electrician who worked on the project found the source of the problem and corrected it so that we now have all flood lights in the front of the Sanctuary working, as well as the lights over the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. The second, and even more important item of concern was the poor support that had been given to the Sanctuary in the past. The “beams” were simple 2 x 4’s supporting the entire area. New stronger wooden beams AND steel supports were installed to ensure good support for generations to come. Our Super 50/50 raffle drawings were held Saturday night at our reception (as promised) and the winners were: first prize – Jacqueline Nunez; second prize – John Mc Mullen; and third prize – Ann Curry. Congratulations to all! Our total amount sold was $17,145. Thank you to all who participated! A special thank you to the volunteers who came to prepare the mailing back in June, as well as those who sold the tickets after the Masses. Without your help our raffle would not have been the success that it was! Thank you to the reception committee who once again outdid themselves, with special thanks to Justine who organized it! The hors d’oeuvres were delicious and plentiful! The sliders were great and I would like to thank the Maywood Inn for their very generous donation! Special thanks to Anthony Klymenko and the Knights of Columbus, who supplied and served our liquid refreshments. Thank you for your Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure, and for all that you do for our parish. Love, Fr. Larry

EXPLANATION OF AMBO MOSAICS

The symbols that you see on the Ambo represent the Four Evangelists. Christian tradition has long connected the author of the four gospels with the four “living creatures” that surround God’s throne, as described in Revelation 4:7. They are also mentioned in the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel.

MATTHEW Winged Man The Book of Matthew deals with the genealogy of Christ; the winged man refers to human ancestors.

MARK Winged Lion The Book of Mark deals with the Resurrection of Christ; it was thought that a lioness’ cubs were born dead and that they were given life from the father lion’s breath.

LUKE Winged Ox The Book of Luke deals with the sacrifice of Christ; oxen were common sacrificial animals.

JOHN Eagle The Eagle is symbolic of highest inspiration; John wrote his Gospel, 3 Epistles, and Revelation.

MASS OF ANOINTING

On Saturday, October 8, our parish will celebrate a communal Anointing of the Sick Mass at 11:00 AM and blessing of the E.M.Ts. This sacrament may be received more than once and is for any person who has become ill and is in danger of subsequent sickness. We especially encourage the elderly to be candidates, but anyone facing major surgery, a serious illness, or anyone who has been afflicted for a long time is invited to receive the sacrament. A light lunch will be served in our auditorium immediately following the Mass.

Complete the form below & return it to the Parish Center or drop in collection basket by Sept. 30th or drop it in the collection basket today.

I will attend and wish to be anointed at the communal Anointing of the Sick on October 8th at 11:00 AM.

Catechetical Sunday "Prayer: The Faith Prayed"

This year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday today September 18, 2016 and focuses on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Many Catholics have used the word "catechism" for years, and they know it has something to do with the Church's teachings. The root word, "catechesis," is from a Greek word meaning "to echo, or resound." Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church's teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church. Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation.

Dear Parish Family, “The purpose of live is to discover your gift; the meaning of live is to give your gift away.” - David Viscott A message Jesus clearly sent to us during his public ministry. Jesus spent the last three years of his life helping people, using His gifts of healing, preaching and forgiveness. Even to the point of getting on His knees to wash the feet of his disciples saying, “Do you realize what I have done for you? “You call me ‘Teacher and Master’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that I have done for you, you should also do” – John 13:12-15 Being involved in the ministries of our Church gives us a chance to use our gifts to help others. In this “Year of Mercy” Pope Francis encourages us to express our faith through the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Sometimes we hear people say, “I don’t have any gifts” or “I don’t know how I can help” If you are not sure, there is a simple formula for you to follow: Discernment = Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Jesus often prayed to His Father in Heaven for help and was guided by the Holy Spirit, which helped Him complete His mission here on earth. We have 30+ ministries in our Parish and they are available to everyone. Our Lady Queen of Peace is a culturally diverse parish and there are many gifts waiting to be discovered. We encourage participation in ministry life to help others and also as a way to grow in our own faith. Our lives are a message to the world; make it one of hope and inspiration!!! You’re invited to use your stewardship of time and talent to further the Kingdom of God in this part of the Lord’s Vineyard. If you are interested in becoming part of one or more of our parish ministries, please see the parish website or email the Pastoral Council: [email protected] The Pastoral Council
