Executive Summary The New Museum is one of the nationʼs leading institutions for exhibiting current contemporary art. In 2007, to coincide with its 30th anniversary, the New Museum opened a new building on the Bowery in New York City and launched its new website, www.newmuseum.org. In February 2008, our consultant team was engaged to develop strategy, conduct research, and redesign the New Museum website. A review of the site reveals a substantial amount of content that highlights the museumʼs new building as well as the exhibitions and events that are housed within the space. Multimedia such as audio, video, and imagery are integrated throughout and enrich the userʼs experience on the site. However, the labeling, layout, and organization of the site are deficient and prevent the user from engaging in facile navigation of the site. In order to improve access to the breadth of material available, our team set out to redesign the site and accomplish these primary objectives:

• Improve the labeling and navigation of the site. • Reorganize the layout of the homepage and content pages. • Create a search function to provide users with another method of information retrieval. • Develop additional interactive features to enhance user experience on the site.

In order to properly assess the site and determine how to implement changes, our team utilized the following strategy: • Personas and scenarios were created that outline model users of the site and tasks they are likely to complete on the site. • Card sorting was done by volunteers and the results were used by the team to determine site labeling and content organization. • The team brainstormed potential interactive features to be included in the restructuring of the site. • Low-fidelity paper wireframes were developed and used with volunteers during paper prototype testing. The results were used to develop

high-fidelity wireframes/templates, and a partially functioning live site (kovachev.net/ia/index.html).

Page 3: Website Redesign of the

Our overall goal in the redesign of the museumʼs website is to allow users of varied Internet experience to easily navigate and access pertinent visitor and museum information. The redesign strives to keep the current siteʼs valuable content and dynamic feel intact. The result is a visually clean, organized site that integrates web technologies that appeal to the New Museumʼs sense of youth and fresh thinking.

Page 4: Website Redesign of the

Statement of Strategy The mission of the redesign is to satisfy usersʼ information needs quickly, while maintaining the fresh look and feel of the New Museumʼs brand. This information needs span from the most basic, such as museum hours, to more complex interactions involving different levels of membership, or an interactive calendar. All of these should be intuitive in interaction design, and a pleasure to work with for users. Our team decided to focus on two main groups in terms of audience. The first group is people likely to come to the New Museum repeatedly, who will hopefully become members and otherwise be drawn into becoming more and more involved in the New Museum. These people are locals who are interested in art and culture, such as students, young professionals, and parents, who are internet savvy, and have experience with advanced internet applications such as RSS feed aggregators. These people are likely to want to know quickly about events and new exhibits at the New Museum, and may be interested in the different benefits of membership. The other group we focused on is tourists from other parts of the country and the world, who may not have as much experience on the Internet. These users need to quickly get an idea of what the New Museum is about artistically, and basic information such as location, directions, and hours, without confusion about how to physically navigate the site. Our basic goal is to create clear navigation with dynamic but clear interaction, to create an attractive site which reflects the New Museumʼs brand,

which will give users a clear idea of the New Museum, and delivers their information needs quickly, while also encouraging them to learn more about the New Museum, its exhibits, and programs.

• Prominent scrolling “ticker-like” flash navigation with three different rows; museum name and offerings (not links), exhibit teasers, events• Static global navigation discreetly in the top left corner• Lower page filled with block navigation; some with descriptions or secondary navigation inside blocks

• Home page is done in Flash; however there is no functionality or interactive component• There is no visual consistency• Slide show in the main, center-left area is not working•Main navigation drop-down menu overlaps sliding animation • The page employs glocal navigation that is present throughout the site•Main events are clearly featured.

• Allows access to all parts of the site, as well as features specific shows/exhibits•Includes links to newsletter, blogs, store, and extensive list of sponsors

• A horizontal bar contains navigation that is global across all the Tate sites (Tate Online, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St. Ives). •Primary navigation for the Tate Modern proper is located beneath a horizontal flash banner and is not differentiated from the content.• The pink color theme of the home page indicates to the user that they are on the Tate Modern site opposed to any of the other Tate sites•Lower level navigation is present on the home page as static links in the body of the page

• Dynamic global navigation. The user has the option to skip the flash animation.• The home page provides a seconday navigation tabs, whith four hyperlinked photos presenting clearly the basic information for any user (new, regular, advance)---Exhibitions; Events, Venues; and Members.• Body text presents exhibitions currently showing, exhibitions coming soon, products catalogue, e-newsletter, MCA info (location, schedule).• The lower page includes three links--Feedback, Contact Us, and Sitemap.

Competitive Strategy

Purpose StatementReview and evaluate the websites of three competing contemporary art museums located in the United States plus two international contemporary art museums to examine navigational systems including search functionality, interactive design, and how these devices highlight content and features of the site.

Page 6: Website Redesign of the

Competitive Strategy Page 2 of 5

Interior page design

• Little consistency between different pages within the site• Some pages have tertiary navigation• No common “look & feel”

• There is no visual consistency with the home page•Different local navigation • The two-column layout is clean and simple• Some pages, like “Past Exhibitions” page, are just a long list of entries without secondary navigation.•Pages look & feel inconsistent

• Glocal navigation persistent on all pages• Tertiary navigation on lest side, as well as links to calendar• Consistent look & feel on all pages•Address, phone number, and email on all pages

• The pink color theme is pervasive through out the Tate Modern site.• Interior page design varies greatly from page-to-page and no consistent content template is used.

• Main navigation bar is presented with flash animation (the name of the section crawl in from right to left and fly up, followed by the subsection). • Secondary navigation inverted-L bar with the following chunks: one or two chunks with links or topic related to the corresponding section, e-newsletter, Calendar, and More information related to the section. • The body text includes at least one photograph or illustration.

Search functionality

• Search box in top right corner• Results page showed no. of results; category of page; and short description for each item• Separate search box for searching the online store

• No search featured on the home page; it is present on a “Calendar” page, but the link to the page is tucked in the lower left-hand corner of the home page.•Search allows for a keyword searching as well as a search within the calendar by date. It also performs filtering of events by a category. •Categories are laid out in a second-level navigation style• There is also a search function within “WhitneyCat” section that performs search within Whitney Archive. It has various advanced

• Calendar can be searched by date, date range, name, or title•Search box on home page• Search powered by Google•Accurate results•Visitor info on left side of SERP

• Both a basic search and an advanced search are available. • Alternate shading between entries is employed for differentiation. • Result entries provide an informational excerpt, are hyperlinked to the pertinent page, and the search term is bolded within the excerpt.

• Search yields search info in a small chart according to the category in which the term appears. The category is hiperlinked and shows the specific paragraph where the term appears highlighted in boldface (except the MCA store).• Metadata is extensive.

Features offered

• Blog, podcasts, calendar, email updates, RSS feeds, classes• Standard visitor and exhibit information

• “Learning@Whitney”, a resource for teachers, kids and teens. • Comprehensive and searchable calendar, searchable Library. • Separate mini-sites featuring special projects, such as “ArtPort”. • Online reservation of tickets for events.

•Calendar, blog, newsletter, kidspace, this week@MAssMoca, podcasts

• The site is available in multiple languages.• E-mail bulletins are available.• An interactive map of the museum may be used to locate collections, pieces available from specific artists, and a registered user may plan a personal tour of the museum prior to his visit.• Information about the building, its history, and the future plans of its expansion. “The Great Tate Mod Blog” which invites users to send in photos and suggestions about how the new extension should be designed. A focus on mood and design has been emphasized.• Online ticketing available.• Special and separate member site available.

• Annual reports for board members• Collections• Touring exhibitions• Resources on PDFs (Learning Resources)• Library• Artist voice (footage of artists discussing their work and practice)• Charts with answer to poll questions• Venues for launches, cocktail parties, dinners and weddings• Publications catalogue• Corporate support• Volunteers; internships; program for youth and teenagers• Frequently asked questions

Primary navigation

• Not immediately noticed; very discreet, small• Labeling is ok, but could be better – e.g. kid stuff under “learn”• Glocal Navigation

• Primary navigation is horizontal glocal navigation with drop-down menus leading directly to numerous sections of the site

• The main navigation redirects to the calendar page seem redundant and confusing. Secondary and contextual navigation are clear and self-explanatory, well laid out.

• A horizontal bar of global navigation provides links to pages that are pertinent and linked to all the Tate sites.• Primary navigation includes “Visiting Information”, “About”, “Explore Tate Modern”, “Collection Displays”, “Exhibitions”, “Events & Education”, “Eating & Drinking”, “The Building”, “Corporate Events”, and “Transforming Tate Modern”.

• It allows the visitor to switch topics easily. Labeling is clear and funky. • Users can find their way back to wherever they need between the museums website (The Museum; Exhibitions & Events; Education; News & Media; MCA Venues; MCA Store; Join Us; Search).• It provides the users whit the sense of what to expect to find in this web site.• Navigation bar on the top is consistent thrhough the site.

Page 8: Website Redesign of the

Competitive Strategy Page 4 of 5

Secondary navigation

• Glocal navigation• Also very understated; small type can be hard to read• Labels seem clear and self-evident• Feedback-underline when rolled over

• Secondary navigation is a list of links leading to anchors within the page.

•Glocal navigation; secondary categories appear below when rolled over•Secondary categories appear on left side of landing page

• Secondary navigation is available as subcategories. Presentation of the secondary navigation varies between glocal and a separate horizontal navigation bar. “About” utilizes anchors as its local navigation.

• The arrengement is an inverted-L. It changes from page to page. (See comments about it in the interior page design.) • It provides context and related content. It gives a very good sense of the granularity of the different topics.Contextua

l navigation

• Contextual negation to other parts of the site (internal)• Links are made apparent by underlining and rollover features

• Contextual navigation is sparse, but visible and clearly executed.

•Not common; sometimes additional links appear on bootom of page leading to external information

• Contextual navigation is available on most pages and increases the depth of the website.

• There are related links through the site. • Contextual navigation includes embedded links.

Interaction design

• Flash animations are common• Content does not act consistently (e.g. some things are links some are not)• Lots of feedback for links• Primary and secondary navigation works intuitively though not designed well

• Glocal navigation within inside pages is sometimes erratic- It closes unexpectedly• There is a difference in labeling of global navigation items between home page and inside pages• In some instances, there is no clear indication of what the page is about

• Main image on home page have arrows to click through exhibition teasers

• Contextual and secondary navigation rollovers employ color change and underlining to indicate hyperlinks. • Primary and secondary navigation links in the vertical bar utilize rollovers that change graphically to indicate a link.• Breadcrumbs utilized, but not consistently.• Global navigation rollovers darken to highlight the option.• Icons used throughout the site (i.e. country flags used to indicate language options).

• Colors are used to identify sections. Backgorund is consistently white through the site, which makes a good balance in the usage of colors. • Pink and red colors used as main color in a page are distractors and not easy to read.• Navigation bar is simple and easy to use. • The design is simple but dynamic through flash animation. It has also playful elements. • Photos and illustrations are used to give a sense of what is included in the section. • Information is easy to find.

Across all the competing websites reviewed, all home pages utilized flash animations to catch the usersʼ attention to promote exhibitions/events at the museums. In many cases, the animations were much more prominent than the navigation systems and could slow website performance. Interior page design, lacked consistency across most websites. In many cases, pages did not have titles or clear orientation. Search functionality ranged from basic keyword search to advanced search options. Some sites filtered results by category. Most competing websites offered added features such as web 2.0 tools (blogs, RSS, podcasts, etc.), online ticketing, FAQs, and email alerts. Persistent glocal navigation was utilized in most cases; some landing pages included tertiary navigation to more granular content categories. Often times, navigational type was very small (9-10 pt). In all cases, contextual navigation was used to redirect to other parts of the site. Links were revealed by underlining and/or changing font color and/or rollover feedback. Interactive design does not always act consistently in many of the sites reviewed, e.g. similar looking items do not always act in the same way. Compared to other competing websites, the New Museumʼs greatest strengths are its prominent and easy-to-read navigation system and consistent look & feel across the site. Weaknesses include a lack of address and contact info on the homepage as well as promotion of exhibitions/events and erratic interactive features. Possible opportunities are added features, such as blogs, interactive map, language options, etc. Threats may be use of eye-catching animations, user interaction features (blogs), and greater usability.

Page 39: Website Redesign of the

Site Management Once a web site has been designed and built, it does not matter how quickly a user can navigate to content if that content is out of date. To this purpose, the updated New Museum site will be based on a simple Content Management System (CMS), which will allow for quick and easy updating. Each type of page (Event, Exhibition, etc.) is based on a template, with areas for title, date, content, image, etc. Each of those areas will correspond with a field in a web form within the CMS. In this way anyone who can fill in a simple web form can update content or add new content. They would not need knowledge of html or any other special skills. Updating the site could be one of a number of an internʼs duties.

New Building

The New Museum building is a home for contemporary art and an incubator for new ideas, as well as an architectural contribution to New York’s urban landscape. Sejima and Nishizawa, who received the commission in 2002, have described the building as their response to the history and powerful personalities of both the New Museum and its storied site.
