Dear Rotary Friends and Friends of Rotary My penultimate newsletter: what to write about, tapping my keyboard with two fingers? Some shrewd observation? a travelogue of the last two

weeks? or a bit of behind the scenes? Well, maybe everything I can fit in…..

At the end of May was the last District 9680 Presidents’ Meeting. This year, I allocated each meeting to an Avenue of Service and the Foundation, with my Chairs organizing programs from Rotaract, Australian Rotary Health, Skills Olympics, International Workshop and the clearest explanation of the workings of the Foundation ever heard. Invited along were the Club Chairs relevant to the evening. I feel this has given new purpose to Presidents’ Meetings, with them being no longer just a distribution point for large yellow envelopes.

Umina Rotary Youth Exchange Weekend Mar 22, 2014

Rotary International Convention Sydney, Australia Jun 01, 2014 - Jun 04, 2014

Belrose Rotary had their Charities Presentation and Sponsors evening on Tuesday this week. I’ve noticed a number of Clubs have taken on these nights with recognition of the local groups they work with and thanks for the sponsors who make the giving possible. It’s wonderful to have them in the one room so the sponsors can see and hear where there contributions go. It also frees up the club’s Changeover from cheque presentations allowing more focus on fellowship and recognition of Club members.

President Debbie of Belrose had the usual reservations of “just being a small club” (of 28) and “not achieving everything we wanted to do”. I could not DISAGREE more. Trying to summarise their efforts as best as I can:

* Vocational – Pride of Workmanship, Apprentice and Small Business Awards; the NINETEENTH year of hosting year 11 students from Peak Hill for business visits and travelling up there to prepare them for interviews;

* Youth - in and outbound exchange students, sponsoring students to RYPEN, RYLA, Science Challenge and two teams to MUNA; Public Speaking competitions for primary and secondary schools; supporting a peer support scheme;

* Community – Mothers and Fathers Day gifts to retirement homes; assisting with Australia Day activities; Bowelcare; forming a new Probus Club; and about 3,800 gifts collected through 18 Trees of Joy among Westpac, other businesses and local shopping centres and organisations and distributing them through nine charities

* International – hosting the GSE welcome; supporting an orphanage in Uganda and provision of clean water in East Africa;

* Fundraising – Christmas light displays, sausage sizzles, book fair trivia night, golf day, Easter Egg Hunt (new), and Antiques Show (new)  - funds benefitting 23 organisations and charities.

President Debbie will probably be embarrassed that I have listed all these achievements, but MY points would be:

1.     Congratulations to her and Belrose Rotary Club for a great year of Service;

2.     On the night we visited, I noted everything was carefully scripted and well presented (except for the DG’s rave) – these things don’t happen by chance or because they have been done for years – a great deal of volunteer effort and expertise is put in by all of our members;

3.     Acknowledgment was given to the widow and family of a former member who still play a key role with all those Tree of Joy gifts – we are first and foremost a CLUB in which Fellowship and interest in Welfare are very important;

4.     Janelle and I have noted that EVERY Club in this District has a similar story to tell – go to the District website and look at the spreadsheet compilation from last year by PDG David – so multiply the above by 67!!

5.     EVERY Club has close community connections with Councils, schools, hospitals and other organisations (Rural Fire Service, Surf Clubs, Women’s Shelters, etc) – they know and respect the enormous work you do.

6.     Despite all those good works and close community ties, we struggle to hold membership numbers and have a wider public understanding of what we do  - our major task to have a future.

What made the DG Zone Official Visits this year work was each President asked to outline what their Club was doing. I can tell you from sitting at the front: after one or two presentations, the crowd attitude was: “that sounds like our Club”; after three or four it was: “gee, that sounds like a lot”; after six presentations: “WOW, Rotary IS making an enormous difference!” All I had to do to top off the evening was to refer to some of the projects and ask the crowd to multiply by twelve to get an idea of the amount of Service achieved across the District and point to the wider world of RI and the Foundation.

Last Saturday, a Foundation Team interviewed six applicants for Peace Fellowships. This was far and away the most ever submitted and my congratulations to those clubs who encouraged applications. I feel this is part of the “opening up” of the Foundation that I have commented upon in earlier newsletters (see the latest figures in the Foundation Newsletter on the District website). After a six-hour session, we eventually recommended two applicants to go through to the Foundation.

In addition to thanking the Clubs for their interest and senior District officers for their input (DGE Graeme, PDG Pam, PDG and Foundation Chair Tony, District Secretary and DGN Gina) I would like to highlight the enormous work done by Chairman Martin Sillink (PP, Dr, Professor, AM, Past President of the International Diabetes Institute). The selection process required collection and distribution of applications, teeing up the interviews, chairing the discussions and reporting back to the applicants (particularly those who were unsuccessful to assist them to refine their applications). We are blessed to have such a distinguished Australian guiding this important task.

Talking about distinguished Australians, I must finish with acknowledging those Rotarians from our District recognised by their country in the Queen’s Birthday Honours: Bev Cooney (Castle Hill); Roseanne Gallo (Macquarie Park); Bob Fraser and Ray Southeron (Gosford North). We know how much Service these dedicated members put into Rotary and their communities (local and international) and it’s great to see that recognized by the wider community. Congratulations to you all!

See you all at the District Changeover on 5 July at Castle Hill RSL!

Richard Gross - 50 years in Rotary Posted by Les Walsh on Jun 13, 2013

The Rotary Club of Erina honoured member Richard Gross’s 50 years of Rotary service on Tuesday 11 June with a special meeting to acknowledge this achievement.

Richard joined the Rotary Club of Brakpan (South Africa) in 1963, where he served as President.  Richard and his wife Beulah emigrated to Australia in 1975 and Richard immediately joined the Rotary Club of East Gosford.  In 2004 Richard resigned from

East Gosford and joined Erina Rotary Club, where he is Bulletin Editor.

Richard’s service was recognised with a citation from the Prime Minister, presented by Member for Robertson Deb O’Neill.  He was also honoured with a NSW State Government Community Service Award, organised by Member for Terrigal Chris Hartcher.  DG John Dodd came through with a personal letter of congratulations from RI President Sakuji Tanaka, and the Rotary Club of Erina recognised Richard’s 50 years of service with a Paul Harris Sapphire pin.

Congratulations Richard!

News? Posted by Les Walsh on Jun 09, 2013

The reporting of Rotarian's good work being done in their community is often not

making the press story or the TV news report.

Why?

Is it because we are expecting too much?

Is it because we are not using the relationships we have with the media?

Is it because we are reporting the wrong news?

Are we just not reporting to the media?

Are we focussing on too many messages?

Is our message one which has the real focus on WHY we do what we do?

Let's think about it for one second.   Items are submitted to the press that focus on what the Rotarians are doing in the community.

Does this give a message of - "this is us and you should join us"

Should we focus on the fact that as leaders in the community we have a drive that is motivated by a

desire to do good and to see others less fortunate than ourselves have a better life.

 This is our humanitarian work - our 6 areas of focus.

Why are we motivated?

Is this our news?  Is this what will attract others to join?

Friendship and making contact.

Fun and enjoyment while we help others?

Having a real connection with others who share the same values of integrity and honesty in our

dealings with people.

Let's focus on the why

Some of the largest community organisations in NSW will join forces on Sunday, October 20 for what promises to be the biggest Graffiti Removal Day yet, Attorney General Greg Smith SC announced today.

This year NSW Government and Rotary Down Under will run the State wide graffiti removal and prevention day with the support of a wide range of community organisations, including Australian Men’s Shed Association (NSW Branch), Scouts and Girl Guides.  “This is the first time such a broad cross section of community groups in NSW have volunteered their time to join the fight against graffiti,” Mr Smith said.

Dear Rotary Friends and Friends of Rotary, welcome to this edition of our District’s E-News

I was really upbeat about compiling this newsletter until a few days ago, but now I am a bit down. The

upbeat factors are easy to enumerate between visiting Clubs and their events, watching the email traffic and reading Club magazines. What struck me was the wide range of projects undertaken by Clubs and the cooperation between different Clubs. Assume every place name below is a Rotary Club; I won’t try to summarise what I’ve read in the magazines – it would be too much.

Further Australian Support For Polio Eradication Posted by Haran Ramachandran on May 29, 2013

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Bob Carr today announced further funding to help eradicate polio – a debilitating disease that continues to strike the world’s most vulnerable people, especially children.

Australia will provide $80 million over four years from 2015 to 2018 to help finish the job and achieve worldwide polio eradication.

This contribution follows a $50 million commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative from 2011 to 2014 announced by the Prime Minister at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth in October 2011.

Crows Nest & Phoenix House Posted by Les Walsh on May 22, 2013

This year Crows Nest’s major local focus is on disadvantaged youth in its lower north shore area.

Phoenix House, based in the centre of Crows Nest in Holtermann St was identified as an important

organisation within the local community, struggling under the burden of demand and limited resources, and needing support in a number of ways.

The Hon Joe Hockey is Patron of Phoenix House and has agreed to be the guest speaker to raise awareness of Phoenix House and assist them by participating in one function only for Rotary this year.

This will be on Friday 21 June at the Kirribilli Club 12.30pm - 2pm at a cost of $130 per person

It is a great opportunity to hear Mr Hockey speak and to be able to ask questions.
