Chapter 4Environment and SystemRequirements

This chapter lists the hardware (machine) requirements and software versions supported withthis release. Machine resources, non-Documentum software components (Operating System, JavaRuntime Environment, and so forth), and other Documentum products determine the uniqueenvironment for each Documentum product. Hardware Requirements, page 25 addresses basicmachine resource requirements. Software Requirements, page 26 addresses specific software versionsthat are required for the installation platform.

Documentum Application Connectors operate on a browser client (see Browser MachineRequirements, page 26).

Webtop operates on a browser client (see Table 4–1, page 26) and an application server (see Table 4–2,page 30). When the supported environments for the browser client and application server are thesame, they can be on the same machine. Otherwise, they need to be on different machines.

Hardware RequirementsThis section lists nominal machine resources required for product installation and use.Your individual machine requirements will vary depending on factors such as thenumber of products installed, size of your deployment, number of users, and networklatency. The Documentum System Sizing Guide provides an in-depth analysis of systemsizing requirements for implementation and deployment of Documentum systems. The Documentum System Sizing Tool dynamically generates estimates of your hardwareresource requirements based on your user and hardware profile.

You can download the Documentum System Sizing Tool from theCustomerNet Web site (http://customernet.documentum.com/developer/downloads/DCTMSystemSizingTool.zip) or click the following hyperlink:DCTMSystemSizingTool.zip

Environment and System Requirements

Browser Machine Requirements

For WDK-based client applications, you need a client machine capable of running thesupported browser configurations listed in Table 4–1, page 26, plus whatever diskspace, RAM, or CPU requirements that may be specified by third-party products suchas Microsoft Office.

WDK-based client applications may install applets and a JRE on the browser clientmachine. This will require approximately 25 MB of free hard disk space. Additionally, you will need sufficient free disk space to handle checked-out and cached documents.

Software RequirementsThis section provides information on supported software environments.

The tables in this section reflect the latest version(s) of third-party products, upon which the Documentum product depends, that are supported at thetime of this release. Version(s) of third-party products supported with priorservice packs and the 5.3 base release are also supported with this release. Forinformation on currently supported environments and future updates, refer toProduct Information System on the Documentum Technical Support web site:http://softwaresupport.emc.com/support/productinfo/dmProductList.asp?option=2.For detailed information about the policies governing supported products, refer tothe ESG Customer Guide available on the Documentum Technical Support web site:http://softwaresupport.emc.com/wcmprodData/sppt_svcs/ESG_Customer_Guide_Support.pdf.

Known Problems and Limitations

Browser back button does not work in WebSphere if cookie-basedpreference is set (70403)

For WebSphere application servers, the browser back button in both Internet Explorerand Netscape does not work once a cookie-based preference has been set.

Invalid permissions error message may not be apparent (70804)

When invalid permissions are assigned to an object, the error message is displayed at thetop of the page, and the user may not be able to see it without scrolling up.

Application server leaves temporary les behind if content transferis terminated by the user (71092)

The application server leaves temporary files behind if content transfer is terminated bythe user. For example, if you view a file and close the browser while the progress bar ison the screen, whatever files have been saved by the server to its temporary directory forthis transfer will not be cleaned.

To clear these files, you can periodically delete them from the temporary locationon the application server machine. The temp directory is defined by the setting<contentxfer>.<server>.<contentlocationwindows> or <contentlocationunix> in app.xmlin each WDK application. The files are typically in "send" or "receive" subdirectories, which may contain another level of subdirectories whose names are only digits.

In some cases, group permit on the Properties Info page does notreect correct values (71237)

If permissions are changed on the Permissions tab and the Info tab is selected beforeclicking OK, the new values for the permissions may not be reflected. The workaround isto be sure to click OK before leaving the Permissions tab.

Permissions for multiple accessors cannot be set at the same time(73968)

Using Internet Explorer 6, if multiple accessors are selected and their basic and extendedpermissions are modified, the changes are not implemented. The workaround is toset permissions for one accessor at a time.

Template must be manually moved to Templates cabinet in order toshare them with other users (74114, 74296)

When the user checks the template box on the document’s Properties→Info page, thetemplate must be manually moved or copied to the Templates folder in the repository, orusers will not have access to it.

Add to Clipboard does not maintain directory structure of VirtualDocument (81789)

When a user selects a virtual document with child images and clicks Add to Clipboard, the copy does not maintain the directory structure of the virtual document. When pastedin a new location, all files are at the same directory level as the document root.

r_modify_date is sometimes changed when there are no changesto the date on the properties page (84636)

On the properties page, if there are no date/time type attributes, r_modify_date willremain the same value as before when OK is clicked without any changes. However ifthere is a date/time type attribute, r_modify_date will be changed each time.

When searching on properties using advanced search component is beingcalled. This component is implemented by the com.documentum.webtop.webcomponent.advsearch.AdvSearch class which in turn extends thecom.documentum.webcomponent.library.advsearch.AdvSearch class.

This class builds a DQL query in the buildPropertiesQuery() method. For this purpose,it uses a utility class called com.documentum.web.formext.docbase.StringExpression.The problem is that this class will do a case insensitive search by default. Thus, it willcreate a query such asselect [propertylist] from dm_document where lower(object_name) = ’<object_name>’.

Document Attributes not being refreshed in import wizard (110922)

When you import a folder with documents, the wizard does not refresh the attributelist when you click next to change from folder attributes to document attributes. Thefolder attributes stay on the screen. This causes a problem when the component isconfigured to default to a custom document type. The required attributes are not shownat all unless you force the screen to refresh by selecting another type, then reselect theappropriate type.

Known problems specic to Collaboration Services

The following known problems apply to Collaboration Services.

Room error messages refer to "DM_FOLDER" and "Folder" (87318)

Error messages might be misleading when objects are sub-typed. For example, if aroom error results from trying to create link/move a room in the same cabinet as theoriginal room, instead of getting an error message that refers to ROOM, the messagerefers to FOLDER, like this: "The [roomname] sysobject is already linked to folder withID 0c00d47b80001525.”

Error messages on notes refer to "document” instead of "note”(92919)

For example, if you create a note in a room and perform operations that result in anerror, the message refers to the note as the "document”, like this: "Clipboard pasteoperation failed. [Error while performing Copy operation: Cannot make copy of thedocument ’xxx’.].”

No warning message if trying to add user to room as Contributor ifalready exists as Owner (94875)

If you add a user to room as Owner, then try to add the same user to same room asContributor, a warning message should explain that some users or groups already inthe room cannot be changed from Owner to Contributor. No message appears, but theOwner role is retained, however.

Known Problems and Limitations

Error when importing a le from a networked folder (53040)

On Macintosh OS X, when importing a file directly from a networked folder, thefollowing error occurs:Content Transfer: File object is nullThe same file works if copied locally and imported from local disk.

This is because the Sun JVM cannot resolve a file path which includes the volume name. This is problematic because the Macintosh OS treats a network drive as another volume.

Object names containing escape characters are not displayedcorrectly (53512)

If the object name contains a character that is part of an escape sequence, such as a filenamed foo&&, the actual object name that is displayed in the UI is foo&&&.

Known Problems and Limitations

Show All Properties may not work (64824, 65092)

When the application server locale does not match the locales in the repository, the ShowAll Properties feature does not work. An example is if you have an application server onan English machine locale (en) and the repository has only one installed locale, Japanese. The query attempts to retrieve information for the repository locale.

Solution: Publish the data dictionary information for the application server locale inthe repository.

Problems viewing documents whose names have double-bytecharacters (65291)

On a non-double-byte Windows operating system and certain viewers, attempting toview a file whose name contains double-byte characters may result in an error messagethat the file cannot be found.

There are two possible workarounds:• Change the associated file type to an application that includes a Unicode font, such

as Microsoft Office 2000.• Install a Unicode font that will display double-byte characters.

Viewing PowerPoint through virtual link disconnects session(65336)

Due to a known issue with Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP, using a virtual link toview a PowerPoint document will result in a disconnect of the repository session. Formore information on this issue, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B311928, "PPT2002: GET Request for PowerPoint Slide Loses SomeSession Properties.”

With Solaris/Tomcat and SSL, import of XML documents with over 200 chunks mayappear to freeze. However, refreshing the browser display will reflect that the importwas successful.

Displaying modied value mapping values requires applicationserver restart (69238)

This limitation is pending resolution of Content Server bug #71080.

WDK does not show new value mapping values after changing value mapping values ofan attribute in Documentum Application Builder. The workaround is to delete the dmclcache, then restart the application server.

Localized characters not supported with virtual links (69570)

Non-ASCII characters are not supported in virtual links. A workaround is to use DRLs.

XML encoding "iso-8859-1” causes problems with Microsoft VM(70860)

This limitation is related to DFC issue #71143.

Note: Since XML applications require the Sun JRE, this issue applies only to XMLdocuments that are not processed through an XML application.

When the Microsoft VM is used on the web client machine, an XML document with anencoding="iso-8859-1" in the header will crash during import with the following error:[Could not load class: sun.io.ByteToCharISO8859_1]

74 Webtop Release Notes

Page 75: Webtop 53 Sp2 Release Notes

Known Problems and Limitations

This is due to a problem between the Xerces parser and the Microsoft VM. Whenthe parser looks at the file encoding "iso-8859-1" it translates this to Java encoding"ISO8859_1", which the Microsoft VM does not recognize.

You can use either of the following two workarounds:• Use the Sun JRE instead of the Microsoft VM on client machines.• Use UTF-8 encoding rather than ISO 8859-1.

Owner cannot delete document when group is deleted (71026)

This limitation is pending resolution of Content Server bug #71113

If a group to which a document owner belongs is deleted and that groupwas given Deletepermissions on a document, the document owner will not be able to delete the document.

Blank page displayed instead of PDF document (71118)

When attempting to comment on a PDF document in Internet Explorer, a blank pagemay come up instead of the document.

Workaround: In Internet Explorer, go to Tools→Internet Options, choose the Advancedtab, and in the Browsing pane select the checkbox "Reuse window for launchingshortcuts."

WDK & Linux: WebSphere hangs randomly on multi-processorsystems (71898)

This only applies to WDK apps that use Linux.

Through the course of our testing we have experienced random hanging of theapplication server process on multi-processor Linux systems. Symptoms of this problemhave included CPU usage reading at a constant 100% and system thread counts higherthan the system’s maximum allowable setting. Under these conditions it has beenpossible to ping the system and also to log in to the system. We are working with RedHat and IBM to help better characterize and resolve this situation; further details maybecome available on Documentum’s support area at http://www.documentum.com.

Known Problems and Limitations

Browser Back button causes problems with subsequent operations(73971, 74061)

Using the browser Back button can cause problems with refreshing the display. Thismay cause problems if the user performs subsequent operations based on this display. For example, if a user checks out an object, then uses the Back button on the browser, thelock is not displayed and the user can check out the document again. A second exampleis if the user deletes a document on the Versions page, then clicks the Back button onthe browser, the deleted document is still displayed, but if the user tries to perform anoperation involving the deleted document on this page, a generic error message appears.

Problems checking in a version as noncurrent (74112)

If the user checks in a document as a new version but chooses not to make that theCURRENT version, then the version that keeps its CURRENT status is markedimmutable, which causes problems such as the inability to attach a lifecycle.

Performance problems when adding users to roles (75173, 76196)

When a user is added to a role, it takes up to 15 minutes for the change to propagatebecause of how WDK applications cache role information. Caching the role informationfor a user has great performance benefits for most other tasks, but in this case causes aperformance degradation.

Cannot annotate more than one open PDF document (80258, 80302,80307)

For Documentum PDF Annotation Services, due to a limitation with Acrobat 7,annotations cannot be added to more than one open document.

Search performance is limited by the slowest repository when thereis less than a full page of results (90482)

This also occurs if a first source returns fewer results than the pagination limit (<10) anda second source is very slow to respond. This happens only when a quick source returnsfewer results than the number of results required in the result page.

Checking out a virtual document from replica repository, then checking in the virtualdocument to the source repository, is not supported.

Application Connectors installation requires Administrator access

Administrator level access is required to install Application Connectors on a clientmachine. Once installed, any authorized user will have access to Application Connectorsfunctionality.

WDK Applications support only JKS Authentication Certicates

The only type of authentication certificates supported at this time are certificatesadhering to the JKS standard. WDK applications do not support self-signed certificates.

If UCF is used with SSL, the SSL handshake will fail if the certificate used to authenticatethe server is issued by a certificate authority (CA) whose root certificate is not amongthose trusted certificates included in the cacerts file that ships with Java. You can usekeytool to list all the trusted CA root certificates contained in Java’s cacerts file. If you usea self-signed certificate or a certificate issued by a CA not supported by Java, you willneed to add that certificate on each client machine using keytool.

Technical notes common to WDK and all WDKapplications

The following technical notes apply to WDK and all DocumentumWDK applications.

Display of escaped HTML strings in label controls

Prior to this release, for label controls to display properly in a browser, documentattributes had to contain escape sequences for HTML-reserved characters. For example,a document attribute with the value "<Work>" would be displayed as <Work> inthe datafield for a label. (A document attribute with the value of "<Work>” could notbe interpreted by the browser.)

To avoid the risk of cross-site scripting, now by default, labels are displayed exactlyas they are stored, so that document attributes with a value of "<Work>" will bedisplayed as "<Work>", and document attributes with a value of "<Work>" will besaved and displayed as "<Work>". This is accomplished behind the scenes by encoding(escaping) the characters in the attribute so they are interpreted correctly by the browser. For example, "<Work>" is converted to "<Work>” which thebrowser interprets as "<Work>". If this label encoding is turned off, the behaviorreverts to that described in the first paragraph.

Label encoding can be set on or off globally or locally. Globally, the WDK app.xml filecontains a new element, <labelproperties>.<encodelabel>, that is set by default to trueto turn on label encoding. You can change this value to false to turn off label encodingglobally. For customized applications, you can override the global setting in app.xmlby setting the value of the encodeattribute to true or false in individual label controls.

Technical Notes

For example: <dmf:label datafield="some_datafield" encodelabel="false"/>. Note that ifyou turn off the encoding either globally or locally you put your application at risk forcross-site scripting.

This new encoding flag exposes an existing problem when documents are created usingthe New Document dialog box, which incorrectly escapes the "<" and ">" characters ifthey are used in a new document name. For example, a name of "<My document>" willbe stored and displayed as "<My document>". There are two workarounds. One isto turn off label encoding, but this introduces the risk of cross-site scripting. The secondworkaround is to manually open the Properties page after the new document has beencreated and change the escaped characters to the desired "<" and ">".

NLS strings from .properties files are not encoded when they are displayed. For example,if you have a string "MSG_WORK=<Work>" in a properties file, and you use it in anapplication with encoding turned on, you will see "<Work>" when your control containsthe following label: <dmf:label nlsid="MSG_WORK"/>.

Installation accounts on the Content Server host

To avoid undesired authentication capability, the Content Server and Documentum webapplications should be installed on separate physical machines, or the WDK applicationshould be installed as a user who does not exist in the repository. For more information, see the topic "Installation Accounts on the Content Server Host” in theWeb DevelopmentKit and Applications Installation Guide.

Popup blockers may interfere with WDK applicationfunctionality

When a new browser window is displayed for actions such as checkout, in a WDKapplication, it is treated as a popup. If there is a popup blocker installed the windowmay not display properly. The workaround is to disable the popup blocker.

Presence of jaxp.properties le may interfere withDFC’s JAXP implementation

Some operating systems such as AIX may install a jaxp.properties file in the directoryJAVA_HOME/lib/ , or that directory may contain a jaxp.properties file that wasintentionally placed there. The purpose of the jaxp.properties file is to specify the defaultJAXP parser implementation by providing the class names for the JAXP factories. An

Technical Notes

empty jaxp.properties file may default to the JAXP implementation provided by theoperating system.

This jaxp.properties file will override the manifest in dfc.jar that points to theDFC-packaged XML parser and transformers. This may lead to errors such as thefollowing:Content transfer: Server returned HTTP response code: 500for URL: http://torcanary:8003/webtop/wdk5-xmlutil?operation=4

In the case of a WDK application, the application server’s error log will show thefollowing error:javax.xml.parsers.FactoryConfigurationError:Provider null could not be instantiated:java.lang.NullPointerException

To resolve this problem, you can do one of two things:• Rename the file jaxp.properties on your local system• Open the jaxp.properties file in a text editor and add the following lines:

javax.xml.transform.DfTransformerFactory=org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl

com.documentum.xml.jaxp.DfSAXParserFactory=com.documentum.xerces_2_3_0.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl

com.documentum.xml.jaxp.DfDocumentBuilderFactory=com.documentum.xerces_2_3_0.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl

javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory=com.documentum.xerces_2_3_0.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl

javax.xml.parser.SAXParserFactory=com.documentum.xerces_2_3_0.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl

javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory=org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl

You can also edit the jaxp.properties file to use a different JAXP parser than the onepackaged by Documentum. For more information, see the XML Application DevelopmentGuide.

Selecting a target drive for installation

The installer uses the same target directory for installation that was used by previouslyinstalled Documentum applications (DFC program root). If the installer runs on a cleansystem that has never had a Documentum product installed or a system that the WDKuninstaller cleaned of all Documentum products, you can select a target directory forinstallation.

Technical Notes

Cannot select another Java SDK in the installer (51948,52488)

The Documentum installers install a version of the Sun JRE in a subdirectory of the DFCprogram root. This JRE is used only by the Documentum installers and uninstallers. It isnot used by the application server, by WDK-based applications, or by browser clients. You must configure your Java application server to use an internal or external installationof the Sun JRE. For the supported versions of the JRE for the application server, see theSoftware Requirements section.

Application server runs out of repository sessions(56935)

The DFC installer creates a dmcl.ini file without setting a max session count.

Workaround: Add the following line to the [DMAPI_CONFIGURATION] section.max_session_count=1000

The count can be set higher, based on the expected number of sessions.

Cancelling checkout of XML document (59166)

For XML documents processed through an XML application, cancelling the checkout ofa parent will cancel the check out of all child objects that may have been checked outby the same user during a prior operation. Make sure that any previously checked outchild chunks are checked in before cancel checkout is performed on the parent. Userswill receive a warning when they are checking out the parent if there are any checkedout chunks.

Uninstaller does not clean up classpath afteruninstalling WDK-based application (59321, 66001)

When WDK or a WDK application is uninstalled, the classpath is not cleaned up onthe application server to protect DFC or other WDK products that may be installed. However, if you plan to reinstall that uninstalled product to a new location, delete thepath to the uninstalled information from the classpath.

Technical Notes

Removing virtual directory from Tomcat after uninstall(67293)

After you uninstall a WDK application from Tomcat using the uninstaller, the virtualdirectory in which the application was installed may be left behind on your system. Thisis by design to avoid the possibility of deleting critical or custom files. Search the virtualdirectory and manually delete it if necessary after making sure that any customizationsyou may have are backed up.

ACS is not used to view HTTP content unless the ACSis congured to break virtual links

ACS is not used to view HTTP content as shipped. In order to display HTTP contentthrough ACS, the <maintainvirtuallinks> parameter must be set to false. Setting<maintainvirtuallinks> to false will mean that relative links in documents will not work, however. ACS can be used for HTTP Edit, Checkout, and Export since these operationsdon’t display content within the browser.

Documentum PDF Annotation Services requires popupcapability in browser (70759)

Documentum PDF Annotation Services will not work if the browser has a popup blockerinstalled.

Using PDF Annotation Services with Text Files (80208)

With Documentum PDF Annotation Services, in order to enable annotations on textfiles, you must add the text file format to your WDK-based application configuration, using the following procedure.

1. Open the following file in a text editor:APP_HOME/webcomponent/app.xml

2. Add the following line in the <formats> section:<format>txt</format>

3. Restart the application server.

Microsoft Word and Excel force you to save even whenno changes were made

If you open a repository document for editing through Microsoft Word or Excel, and ifyou then select File>Exit without making any changes, you will get a dialog box askingyou to save the document (either into the repository or locally), even though you didnot make changes. You can select No if you do not want to save the document. Thisbehavior happens because Word and Excel automatically changes the file modified dateand time when you open a document, thus making it appear the document’s contenthas been changed.
