MY PROPOSAL FOR A LIFETIME OF HAPPINESSBY JAMES DUFF

I am submitting this wonderful story to be entered into your prize for the 2 night stay at the luxurious Thompson Suite.

My name is James Duff and I met my beautiful fian-cé (Michelle Montgomery) 4 years ago. We met the old fashioned way, via online dating, and hit it off imme-diately. As time went on we grew stronger as a blend-ed family with our children acting more like brothers and sister every day. As time went on I realized that this woman was my best friend, lover, and the person that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We had decided in the fall of 2013 to book a week-long trip to a place that Michelle had always wanted to see, New York, for her birthday in July. It was then I dreamt about the perfect way to ask for her hand in marriage. I decided the first step would be to get the perfect diamond ring for her. I knew that she would be happy with whatever I chose however I really wanted this to show her how special she is. I chose to go with a gold smith (Lionel at Artemis Jewellers) and have a ring custom made for her. By the time it was prepared we were close to celebrating the new year of 2014. I knew it was going to be a challenge to hold onto the ring and not give any hints as to my intentions, however I was determined I could do it for the 8 months that it would take.

When the time came to fly to New York I was pan-icking as to how to transport this beautiful ring with-out her seeing it and without risking losing it into the airline luggage system . I finally decided on packing it on my carryon with the hopes that something didn’t go wrong where security had to reveal my secret. I was successful in transporting it without her knowledge. We spent a few days enjoying the scenery as I made plans for the proposal. On the day of we were walking past the central park horse and carriage pickup drop off area when I asked my babe which carriage she

liked the best. She chose the purple one and I made the arrangement for a ride through the park. It was a beautiful sunny day and as we wound our way through the park I got down on one knee, pulled the ring from my pocket and asked her to spend the rest of her life as my wife. She was shocked and overwhelmed with emotion but she said YES! As you can imagine it made me the happiest man on the planet.

That is my story and I have to admit I am not a dra-matic writer but I am thankful for an entry into your contest.

MAGIC IN MALIGNEBY JONATHAN ALLERS

I h a v e b e e n married for just over five months now and I pro-posed last Decem-ber over the Christ-mas holiday.

I took my wife-to-be for a day trip to Jasper and took her for a walk up along Maligne Can-yon. For those who don’t know, the Maligne Canyon River freezes over in winter and becomes a walk-up, the ice from the can-yon walls extending over a hundred feet up on either side. Unknown to my wife, I had conned my brother and about six of our best friends to drive to Jasper the night before, and had set up a solid table with chairs, music and candles right at the farthest point in the Canyon. So as we enter one of the most majestic ar-eas of this wilderness hike, she saw a slice of heaven underneath a cathedral of stone, complete with hot chocolate. Joyously, after a loving (but short) speech, complete with gifts representing each stage of our re-lationship this far, and a journal of every date I ever took her on . . . she said yes!

My fiancé is so sweet but re-ally unable to keep a secret. He told me he bought me a ring a few weeks ago. He told my mom the next day and she said she was so excited but was worried he had ruined the surprise and he said he just couldn’t wait and the surprise was still when he would do it but it wouldn’t be for months.On December 23, I came home from a long shift at work expecting to just quietly watch TV by myself for a bit as it was 11:30 PM and he’d already called me to say he was tired and going to bed earlier that evening. When I arrived at the house there were  hundreds of rose petals on the floor along with candles down our hallway which led to the bedroom, I had thought he  had fallen asleep with candles  in the hallway! When I walked into the bedroom he was knelt down on one knee with a ring in his trembling hand with “Marry Me?” in rose petals on the floor. He barely got out a few words before I squealed yes. He told me he was so nervous and now we couldn’t be happier. :)

Here is the story of my proposal to my beautiful wife of four years. I met my wife at the age of 26 years old from a website a friend suggested called Persian-WifeFinder.com (Just joking!). We actually met online on the website Christian Mingle and after two weeks of chatting we decided to meet and shortly after we became a couple.

Six months later I decided she was the one. With excitement I decided to get her parents’ permission and then buy a beautiful ring. I booked the revolv-ing restaurant in downtown Edmonton called the Chateau Lacombe. This particular restaurant looks over the whole city and revolves around very slowly so customers can appreciate the view. I’d like to say that I was cocky and confident  about the pro-posal but my wife would tell you that I was nervous, sweating none-stop, rambling and not making sense. During supper, I finally got the courage to ask my wife at that moment. I moved chairs aside and bent down on one knee in front of all the people sitting around us and asked her to be my wife. She was in total shock, she nodded her head saying yes .... But it did take a while to get a response as she had her mouth wide open in complete shock. Six months later we where married and three and a half years later we welcomed our daughter to the family. It was the best decision of my life to ask Emily to be my wife.

So, you’re getting married and it’s time to make a decision about cake. We know you have a mara-thon of other decisions to make and choosing cake is just one of many. SPREAD THE JOY: A wedding is the perfect place to pay it forwardBY PAM SNOWDON

It’s natural to think about how others will express their happi-ness when you get married. After all, bridal showers and gift regis-tries are a custom of the occasion. But what about giving, rather than getting?

For Calgary residents Jamie Solland-Khory and Jamshed Kho-ry, giving was a natural and easy decision to make. “We are passion-ate about giving,” she says of their donations to a couple of favourite charities in lieu of take-home gifts for guests at their wedding last summer.

“Giving back is part of both of our upbringings. Rather than spending the money on party fa-vours, we wanted to do something that was meaningful to us. We each chose one charity that felt close to our hearts.”

Solland-Khory made a cash do-nation to the long term care unit at Olds Health Care Centre. Her

grandfather had been a patient in the unit, unfortunately passing away shortly before the wedding. Her husband donated to a drop-in centre in Calgary where his father was a volunteer.

“Donations to any area of health care go a long way in com-plementing services at local hos-pitals and enhancing the patient care experience.  Without these

donations so many comforts and services just would not exist,” says Wayne Krejci, Site Manager at Olds Hospital and Care Centre.

Ashlee Hamblin, a Develop-ment Officer at the David Thomp-son Health Trust in Central Al-berta agrees. “Rather than paying a couple of dollars per person for favours just for the sake of giving guests something from the wed-ding, you can donate that money and make a big impact on the lives of others.”

“Many couples already have plenty of stuff for their home so they request donations for chari-table causes instead,” she adds. “Or they donate food hampers to the local food bank in lieu of putting centerpieces on each table at the reception.”

Hamblin says fundraising activi-ties at the wedding can be part of the fun, too. Take the traditional clinking of glasses to get the couple to kiss: instead, guests are encour-aged to put money in a donation jar for each kiss. A special ‘toonie bar’ can be set up designating proceeds from the alcohol sales to the charity of choice.

the reception tables letting guests know about their charitable giving, but the intention can be provided on the wedding invitations, as well. A description of the charity will give guests some background, for instance why the charity is close to the hearts of the couple.

Solland-Khory suggests asking your employer about a corporate policy to match charitable donations. In their case, both employers have philanthropic pro-grams in place. Some companies may have a Community Invest-ment Advisor on staff that research-es and recom-mends charitable foundations and causes on behalf of the corporation.

“It’s worth look-ing into because it increases the overall donation,” S o l l a n d - K h o r y says.“It’s a win-win situation.”

Hot trends in wedding cuisine (MS) Once a couple has official-

ly tied the knot, the newly recog-nized man and wife and all of their guests will retire to a party room where they can mingle, dance and enjoy a good meal.

In the past, standard fare like prime rib and roasted chicken dominated wedding menus. But to-day’s weddings cater to people of various culinary tastes, and cou-ples and their guests can expect more upscale and creative cuisine to be rolled out for wedding recep-tions. The following are a handful of the more popular trends with regard to wedding cuisine.

MINIATURE BITESMany people say good things

come in small packages, and when it comes to miniature versions of favorite foods, they may be right. Instead of large meals that fill guests up fast, they can munch on smaller bites of their favorite dish-es. How about a piece of meatloaf topped with whipped mashed pota-toes? A cherry tomato with a small piece of mozzarella cheese makes a mini caprese salad. Turning fa-vorite foods into bite-sized adven-tures can add a touch of whimsy to the reception.

BREAKFAST FOR DINNERSome couples are circumvent-

ing high price tags for their wed-dings by choosing to hold the fes-tivities at less expensive times of day. Brunch-themed weddings are a big hit with those who would much rather dine on a stack of pancakes than a dish of pasta. Om-elet stations, croissants and a bevy of other breakfast table fare can be enjoyed any time of the day.

DIM SUMDim sum allows guests to sam-

ple different foods without filling up. Carts of dumplings and other small plates of appetizers can be wheeled around so everyone can choose what they want and what they want to avoid.

GOURMET COMFORT FOODPeople love familiar comfort

foods, but now gourmet comfort foods are shaking up wedding re-ceptions. Mac-and-cheese with gouda and brie or chicken pot pie with a puff-pastry crust are a few offerings that can add glamour to down-home cooking.

FOOD WITH A SHOWInstead of passed foods or buf-

fet stations, couples are opting to make food an experience for guests. An oyster bar with a chef

serving fresh seafood or a dessert master whipping up flambé is a feast for the eyes and mouth.

INTERESTING BUFFET STATIONSKeep guests on their toes with

various meal stations. A bountiful display of artisanal cheeses, fruits and breads will be a cheese lover’s dream. These stations also can be appetizing focal points around the room and ensure all guests get a bite of what they like best.

FAMILY STYLERustic and informal weddings

have grown in popularity. Rath-er than food being brought to the guests or participants lining up in buffet lines, family-style dining al-lows guests to share conversation and pass the peas at the same time. Larger, rectangular tables allow more guests to sit with one another

FOOD AND BEVERAGE PAIRINGSFood-forward wedding couples

tail. A slider and a craft beer or

a dumpling and a shot of saki are

examples of this trend.

NONTRADITIONAL ‘FAKE’ CAKESInstead of a multi-tiered cake

or the cupcake fad that is starting

to fizzle, couples are now opting

for something new. Desserts that

mimic the look of cake, but aren’t

quite that combination of sponge

and frosting are trending. Crepes,

pies, cookies, and doughnuts are

acceptable and can add a creative

spark to the cake-cutting ceremo-

ny. When offered along with des-

sert stations, guests can certainly

get their fill of sweet delights.

VEGAN AND GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONSChances are one or more peo-

ple attending the reception will be

on a restricted diet. Rather than

relegate these guests to dining on

side dishes and patchwork meals,

certain couples are building entire

offerings around vegan and gluten-

free foods.

Couples are getting creative

with their food and beverage offer-

ings at their weddings. Guests nev-

er know which culinary wonders

they will encounter as they gather

to wish the newlyweds well.

Modern trends in wedding videography (MS) A couple’s wedding day is

often a whirlwind for the bride- and groom-to-be. Happy couples hope to remember every little de-tail, but that can be difficult when so much is going on. That is why many brides and grooms hire vid-eographers to preserve the memo-ries of their weddings.

Couples who fail to capture their ceremony and reception on film may feel like they missed out once their big day has come and gone. As a result, a professional videographer can be a wise invest-ment.

Today’s wedding videos have come a long way from their poor-ly produced predecessors. Gone are the potentially cheesy sound-bites and elevator music. Many of today’s videos are artfully edited and highly cinematic productions that could have couples wishing they were viewing videos in the-aters. The following are some wed-ding video trends popular among today’s couples.

• Brief clips and highlights: Few

people want to sit through their en-tire wedding day frame-by-frame. Montages of key elements of the day are much more popular than a chronological unfolding of the ceremony and reception. Some vid-eographers like to show snippets of what’s to come at the start of the wedding video, then go into more extensive segments later on.

• Special filters or film: Filters and lighting effects can give a wed-ding video an entirely different feel. For example, filming in 8mm can lend a grainy touch to the vid-eo and make it seem ethereal or even part of a home movie collec-tion. However, few people want the stark reality of a high-definition camera that highlights every flaw.

• Film chapters: Dividing seg-ments of the video into different chapters allows viewers to fast for-ward to the parts they want to see and pass those they can skip. This saves the hassle of having to watch the video in its entirety.

• Artistic indy feel: Film buffs may want a wedding video that

breaks the mold. Ask videogra-phers to create something that would fit in at the Sundance or Tribeca film festivals.

• Sameday editing: Want to re-visit the ceremony at your wedding reception? Some videographers will edit portions of the ceremony and preparations for the big day in the time between the ceremony and reception. This gives all guests, including those who may not have been able to make the ceremony, the chance to view the nuptials.

• Unobtrusive technology: This trend relates to the equipment used to capture wedding memo-ries rather than the actual finished product. No one wants their view of the ceremony or reception to be marred by a big, bulky camera. Smaller video cameras enable vid-eographers to seamlessly blend in and perhaps capture shots that larger cameras could not.

Preserving wedding memories takes on new meaning when cou-ples explore the growing trends in wedding videos.
