APPLICATION FOR LICENSE The couple must be in The Bahamas at the time of application for the marriage license. RESIDENCY PERIOD Couples must be in The Bahamas for 48 hours before applying for their marriage license. They can be married once they receive their approved license the day after application. The operational days/hours of the Registrar General’s Office are Monday-Friday, 9:30am-4:00pm. PLEASE NOTE: The Registrar General’s Office is closed on weekends and on Bahamian Holidays, so that must be considered when planning the timing of a wedding.

PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION AND RESIDENCYBoth parties must produce a valid passport, driver’s license and certified copy of birth certificate and photo ID. The parties must also produce evidence of the date of their arrival in The Bahamas.The applicants’ names should be consistent on ALL documents. Please note that the name on the birth certificate takes precedence. The bride’s name shown in the Photo ID must be used at all times, unless, a Divorce Decree specifically states that the wife should “resume her maiden name.”

BLOOD TEST No blood test is necessary.

DIVORCED If either party has been divorced, the original final decree or a certified copy of the decree absolute is required. SINGLE If either party is single, and has never been married before, a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn before a notary public or other person authorized to administer oaths in the country of residence. This document must accompany the application for the marriage license. This declaration can also be obtained in The Bahamas from an attorney-at-law or notary public.

WIDOWED If either party is widowed, the original death certificate, or certified copy, must be produced. Where applicable, a translated certified and notarized copy of the death certificate must be produced. NAME CHANGES Proof of legal name change is required in all cases where the name is shown differently on the documents being used as identification. NOTE: Marriage Licenses are issued at The Registrar General’s Office in Nassau, Bahamas. Your Wedding Coordinator will accompany you, and assist you with this process.
