Jesus, the author of Baptism and the one who bestows the Holy Spirit upon us, is baptized by John the Baptist. In doing so, he shares more intimately a sacred relationship with us. As “children born of water and the Spirit”, we have received a calling to follow in His path of service by promoting the peace and love that flows from a life of justice and righteousness.

In a very real and powerful way we have entered into a covenant with God, through Jesus the Christ. What is a covenant? Put simply, it is an agreement. God said, “I agree to be your God and you agree to be my people.” This proposal was re-stated many times in ancient scripture, with varying degrees of success.

But now, Jesus has come into the world to actually become this covenant. He was the most profound agreement possible between God and humanity. He was both halves of the cov-enant, God’s and humans’. And, we want to know and believe this through an intimate and lively relationship with Jesus the Christ.

The Baptism of Jesus Christ is at the heart of his mission to bring us salvation and peace. We cannot know this on our own, but rely on the ministry of Jesus, the sacred scriptures, and the teachings of the Church to know and embrace the Baptism we have received. This brings us to conversion and discipleship.

We are baptized by both water and the Spirit, the beginning of a life with Christ, turning from Sin and Evil, to the ways to God’s Kingdom. We seek to live in the covenant, that is an intimate relation with God through Jesus the Christ, doing the mission of Jesus and a lifelong commit-ment to a life of spirit and truth.

CentennialCelebration

Many months ago--long before COVID was even in our vocabulary--St. Thomas Parish staff was working on ideas for our 100th Anniversary celebration. But then the pandemic struck and plans everywhere stalled. Now, as we look ahead to this new year with hope on the horizon, we are re-adjusting our plans and looking forward to a post-pandemic celebration.

Memories Wanted! We want to hear and share your memories of St. Thomas Aquinas. We’ll publish some of them in the bulletin, on Facebook, and use them in our celebration. Maybe we’ll even revive some of those great traditions.

Please send your stories to us in any of the following ways: • EMAIL: [email protected] • FACEBOOK: message us at www.facebook.com/Stthomasaquinasfreeport • US MAIL: write or type your story and mail it to us at 1400 Kiwanis Drive, Freeport, IL 60132
