A good entry of hoggs met a very fast trade and more could have been sold, overall average on the day was

172.1p, highest so far this week in the South West.

Several pens over 180p and to a top of 185p for a pen of 46.1 kilos (£85.50) from Messrs RW & K Squire, Slade

Farm, Honeychurch followed by Graham Cowling, Bude who realised 182p for his 45.1 kilos (£82.20). 18 Pens

realised £84.50 and over to a top of £87 for two pens of heavies from Victor Goaman, Stitworthy with Mr WA

Uglow of Milton Abbot realising £86 for his 49 kilos followed by Pat Sanders, Heath, Bradworthy who made

£85.80 for 48 kilos.

40 NEW SEASON LAMBS

A small entry saw a very strong trade overall average of 230.4p

and a lot more are needed to fulfill buyers orders. Top per kilo

on the day was 238p for 40 kilos from Shaun Ellis, Trillacott.

Top per head on the day was £103.50 for a pen of Charollais 44.8

kilos from Dave Short, Bagbury followed by James Crouch,

Higher Cookworthy, Lifton who realised £100 for his 42.2 kilo

Charollais x.

302 DRAFT EWES & RAMS

A flying trade several pens around £100 and to a top of £108 for

a Charollais ewe from Sally and Chris Prouse, Court Green Farm

followed by Simon Sluggett, Alvacott who realised £102.

Several pens of Mules over £70 and to a top of £77.50 from

Messrs Dufty Bros, Stoney, Northlew. Just one ram on offer this

week from George Hillson, Bere Alston which realised £128.

COUPLES – 100 EWES & 165 LAMBS

A flying trade from start to finish and still more are needed.

Doubles sold to a top of £185 for a Suffolk x from David

Chugg, Marwood followed by Michael Chugg of Lower

Metcombe, Marwood who realised £183 for his Cheviot x

Mule who also realised £140 for his singles. David Chugg also

realised £150 for his pen of Suffolk x singles. Jim Hookway of

St Giles, Torrington saw his BM Suffolk x double couples to

£170 and singles to £148. A run of Lleyn hogg singles from

Messrs Kirk of Petrockstowe very much sought after topping

at £175. More hogg couples are needed please.

x heifers at £575, £530 and £495. Messrs

K & J Parsons from Jacobstow sold good

young British Blue x bulls for £465 with

another at £460. Mr A Andrew from

Beaworthy sold a good young British Blue x bull for £465.

Young Limousin x bulls to £428 on behalf

of Moorview Farms Ltd from Milton

Damerel and Messrs RW & R Risdon

from North Tamerton sold their best

British Blue x bull for £405 with another

two making £400. Young Hereford x

bulls to £268 for Messrs CG & BA Dart & Son from Holsworthy and Charolais x bulls to £350 for Mr BS

Martin from Marhamchurch.

Friesian bulls to £185 on behalf of Messrs RG & VJ Griffin from North Petherwin and Mr BS Martin sold Friesian

bulls at £168, £150 and £145 with the top heifers noted above Devon x heifers made £365 four times for Mr

TC Zeale from Woolacombe. A smart young Limousin x heifer from Messrs LS Higgins & Son made £365 and

young British Blue x heifers to £355 on behalf of Mr MC Vanstone from Buckland Brewer with another young

British Blue heifer at £340 for Messrs TP & JH Isaac from Hollacombe.

Another flyer this week! Several second quality

Continentals 16 – 20 months old on offer which realised very strong prices throughout the sale with

Dairy x Continental heifers especially exceeding

expectations with many £900 plus. The few forward

steers on offer topped at £1170 for a British Blue

steer from Messrs RB & NJ Veale, Upcott Barton

followed by £1135 for a 24 month old purebred

Devon from Mr RE Dennis, Southview with single

suckled Continentals from Mr R Walter, Putshole

close behind at £1115 for four Charolais.

Top of the heifers this week was £1155 for a Charolais from Messrs GP & JA Kirk, Higher Larkworthy. Several

other bunches of Dairy x Continentals and Natives £1050 plus. Young steers and heifers jumped again by £80

- £100 with 11 month old Dairy x Continentals £750 - £840. A consignment of single suckled Herefords from

Mr N Aris, Haycroft averaged £813 to £880. Holsteins sold well again this week stronger sorts to £870 for

two from Mr MJ Avery, Easton Moor. Younger 18 – 20 month old Holsteins to £640 - £730.

Another good trade and many more now required for grazing, stronger framed cows topped at £1000 for a

South Devon from Mr RJ Throssell, Week St Mary whose other smaller framed South Devon realised £755.

An Aberdeen Angus cow from Nick Hedden, Bideford sold for £825. Limousins from Messrs KS & RE Gifford,

Milford £835. Older lean Holsteins sold to a top of £455 from Messrs NL & FM Cleave, Launcells.

What a trade averaging 129p with an average per head of £942. Top price per head was achieved by Mr MR

Satchell, Week St Mary for a Blonde D’Aquitaine cow which made a fabulous £1168 with five others over £1000. Holsteins topped at 129p for a 718 kilo cow from Messrs MG & J Heal, Allins Week at £926. More

required whilst the trade remains so strong.

Beef saw the best handy weight heifers reaching 180p for a 550 kilo British Blue from Mr R Honey, Higher

Beer. Heavier Continentals from Mr Stan Hopper, Rydon topped at 177p for a 698 kilo Simmental realising

£1231. Non farm assured Aberdeen Angus from Nick Hedden, Bideford reached 167p with others at 165p.

A large entry for our special Spring Challenge

Cup Show & Sale saw a large crowd of

purchasers present. A good trade was seen

throughout the sale with consistent prices for

quality 1st calving heifers.

The sale was topped by the overall champion

and first prize pedigree heifer ‘Hartlandview

Cancun Bluebell which sold at £1750 on behalf

of Mr Martin Webber of Exeter. The Mott

Family of Okehampton sold heifers from

their Janeck herd at £1650 and £1620 for

Janeck Supersonic Flora and Janeck Captain

Grey 2. Also selling at £1620 on two

occasions were Messrs P Littlejohns & Son of

Hartland whose consignment of seven freshly

calved heifers averaged £1579.

Milky cows were in strong demand with a freshly calved Swedish

red cross senior cow born in March 2009 topping the section at

£1550 on behalf of Gordon Davis from Tiverton. Crossbred

cows remained in demand throughout the sale with Messrs TC Zeale & Son from Woolacombe selling a 4th calving dairy

shorthorn cross cow at £1480.

In calf heifers met a good trade with close to calving heifers in

great demand. Messrs KJ Bragg & Partners of Chumleigh topped

this section at £1520 for Titterton Bakombre Grace 2 closely

followed at £1500 by Kilgogue History Ruby on behalf of J.G.

Mitchell from Lostwithiel with Treginegar Dairy Farms selling

Kemerton Avalon Sybil 39 at £1480.

Included in the youngstock section Mr JG Mitchell of Lostwithiel

and Mr D Thorner of Langaford Farm, Ashwater dispersed their

youngstock to a good trade with bulling heifers topping at £900,

yearlings at £780 and heifer calves topping at £600. A

consignment of crossbred youngstock from Messrs AMR & BM

Thomas of Newquay saw a solid trade with yearlings topping at

£460. A pedigree holstein bull from P & S Harris of Bodmin sold

at £950.
