  • 08WEDNESDAY 21 OCTOBER 2020SportAlmeida retains overall race lead as Tratnik wins Stage 16AFP — SAN DANIELE DEL FRIULI

Portugal’s Joao Almeida ensured he will wear the pink jersey for a 14th consecutive day after defending his overall race lead yesterday on the Giro d’Italia’s 16th stage won by Slovenian Jan Tratnik.

Tratnik, a 30-year-old Bahrain McLaren rider, crossed the line seven seconds ahead of Australian Ben O’Connor, after the run from Udine on the border with Slovenia.

Almeida finished nearly 13 minutes off the pace among the peloton of favourites but gained a valuable two seconds on Dutch rival Wilco Kelderman.

The race finishes in Milan on October 25.

“Sometimes the best defence is to attack,” said the Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider.

“In the end I was feeling good and I attacked, gaining a few seconds.”

Almeida bared his teeth in the final kilometre push for the line at San Daniele del Friuli in north-eastern Italy, leaving Team Sunweb’s Kelderman second overall at 17sec.

Kelderman’s Australian teammate Jai Hindley, third overall, is nearly three minutes adrift, having finished first among the pursuing group which including two-time race winner Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.

It was a first Giro stage win for Tratnik, who outwitted his final breakaway rival O’Connor in the race for the line.

The 28-rider breakaway had formed in the first hour, but without any of the challengers for overall victory.

    Tratnik and Italian Manuele

Boaro broke clear 60km from the finish, with the Slovenian shaking off the Astana Pro Team rider with 40km to go, building up a comfortable 40-second lead on the pursuing group. O’Connor fought back on the final climb of three up Monte di Ragogna, with 13km to go, with Tratnik letting the Australian lead in the final kil-ometre before pulling clear for the line.

“I attacked so far from the finish and the last climb was very hard,” said Tratnik.

“I didn’t think I could do it, but in the end, it was a perfect day. We are close to the Slov-enian border so today my

brother and my girlfriend were here.

“500 metres from the finish I saw my girlfriend and I found some extra energy that allowed me to win”.

It was his ninth career win and second WorldTour victory after the prologue of the Tour de Romandie last year.

There were two positive tests for coronavirus before the stage.

Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria tested pos-itive among a batch of 492 during Monday’s rest day. The second was an AG2R La Mondiale team employee.

    “Gaviria went straight into

isolation after the test result. He feels fine and is completely asympto-matic,” his UAE Emirates team announced.

“All the other riders and staff members returned negative tests and will have other tests today,” they added.

Gaviria, who also tested positive for the virus in February, had been 126th out of 138 overall.

Monday’s total of two positives was down on the first round of testing, when the virus was detected in riders Steven Kruijswijk and Michael Mat-thews along with six team personnel.

The day after the first tests, two teams quit the race -- Kru-ijswijk’s Jumbo-Visma outfit and Michelton-Scott whose leader Simon Yates had stopped after developing minor symptoms.

Today’s 17th stage hits the Dolomites with 203km from Bassano del Grappa to the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort, with three climbs including a final one over 12.5km.

Portugal’s Joao Almeida wearing leader pink jersey crosses the finish line in Stage 16, yesterday.

Slovenia’s Jan Tratnik celebrates on the podium after winning Stage 16. Roglic wins explosive

Vuelta opening stageAFP — ARRATE, SPAIN

Defending champion Primoz Roglic won stage one of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday after outsprinting an elite group that had survived the steep final 5km climb to Alto de Arrate.

Team Ineos had set the pace up most of the climb and their leader Richard Carapaz was second, while Irishman Dan Martin of Israel Start-Up Nation finished third.

Roglic used his trademark late kick in the final 500m to open a gap of just a few seconds for a com-fortable win that puts him in the race leader’s red jersey.

The Vuelta set off almost two months late from Irun instead of from the Nether-lands as originally planned, with few fans in attendance for a 173km rolling run

through the Basque Country. The original route had

been flat, but the 18 stage Vuelta has started with a bang on this rolling terrain with Frenchman Thibaut Pinot and Dutch former Giro champion Tom Dumoulin losing time already.

The race passed some of the region’s prettiest spots with Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma leading the peloton as it flew past the sweeping horse-shoe bay at San Sebastian.

Roglic arrived as defending champion but with a point to prove after his late meltdown on the Tour de France saw him relinquish the yellow jersey.

With a blustery wind there were a series of falls with Dani Martinez of Edu-cation First taking a while to dust himself off and carry on and Michael Woods also falling and losing time.

Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic celebrates after winning the first stage of the 2020 La Vuelta.

Almeida finishes nearly 13 minutes off the pace among the

peloton of favourites but gained a valuable two seconds on Dutch rival Wilco Kelderman. The race finishes in Milan on October 25.

Mahomes, Edwards-Helaire shine as Chiefs down BillsAFP — LOS ANGELES

Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 161 yards as the Kansas City Chiefs bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 26-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday.

Mahomes completed 21-of-26 passes for 225 yards in his first career start against the Bills and safety Daniel Sorensen helped seal the win with a late interception for the Chiefs, who improved to 5-1 on the season.

The Chiefs were eager to get rid of the sour taste in their mouths after a disappointing 40-32 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders in week five.

Rookie Edwards-Helaire carried the ball 26 times to record his second 100-yard plus game after the Chiefs had

to make some adjustments in their passing game because of injuries.

With Sammy Watkins sitting out due to a hamstring injury, Demarcus Robinson saw an increase his workload, leading all receivers with five catches for 69 yards.

Trusty target Travis Kelce made five catches for 65 yards and Byron Pringle got 46 yards of offence out of two grabs in the first game between the two AFC clubs since 2017.

Sorensen made a clutch defensive play with 71 seconds to go as the Bills were making a last ditch effort to come from behind.

Sorensen picked off a stray Josh Allen toss and ran it back four yards which ended Buf-falo’s final offensive drive of the game.

Allen completed 14-of-27 passes for 122 yards and two scores for the Bills, who like the Chiefs were trying to bounce back from their first loss of the NFL season. Allen also led the Bills in rushing on Monday with 42 yards on eight carries.

Buffalo committed three turnovers in a crushing 42-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans in their most recent game.

The Chiefs-Bills game was originally scheduled for last Thursday but was moved due to a coronavirus-related league scheduling change.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (centre) is tackled by Buffalo Bills cornerback Josh Norman (right) and defensive end Mario Addison after making a first down in the third quarter.

Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns and running back

Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 161 yards as the Kansas City

Chiefs bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 26-17 victory over the Buffalo

    Bills.

Ban against Naser dismissed after ‘comical’ missed test

    AFP — LONDON

The doping charges brought against Bahrain’s 400 metre world champion Salwa Eid Naser have been dismissed, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced yesterday.

The 22-year-old Naser was provisionally suspended in June and charged with failing to meet ‘whereabouts’ criteria in circumstances the World Ath-letics Disciplinary Tribunal said “would have been comical were the consequences not so serious”.

The AIU charged the Nigerian-born runner with four alleged ‘whereabouts’ failures which included three missed tests between March 2019 and January this year.

But the Disciplinary Tri-bunal ruled that one of those, on April 12, 2019, “cannot be confirmed” as a missed test by the athlete, meaning Naser had not missed three tests within 12 months which is required to prove an anti-doping violation.

The tribunal reported problems with the online whereabouts system ‘ADAMS’ for both sides.

It said that Naser had never managed to log on to ADAMS let alone submit her wherea-bouts information.

The Bahrain athletics fed-eration had delegated the task to one of its officials, who failed to update Naser’s whereabouts for a test in January of this year after sleeping through the morning deadline to update her location.

The tribunal rejected Naser’s assertion that this should not count as a missed test.

For the earlier test, last April, the tribunal ruled that even though Naser’s ADAMS information gave the wrong address, the inspector should have done better once he had worked out the correct building.

“What happened next would have been comical were the consequences not so serious,” said the ruling.

Kobe’s 2008 MVP jersey to be displayed at Smithsonian museumREUTERS — NEW YORK

NBA great Kobe Bryant’s (pictured) jersey from the 2008 season when he won his sole regular season Most Valuable Player award will be displayed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington.

Bryant, a Los Angeles Lakers icon and five-times NBA champion, was killed in a helicopter crash at the age of 41 in January along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

Bryant wore the jersey in Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, a series the Lakers lost before he led them to consecutive titles in 2009 and 2010. He donated the jersey to the museum in 2017.

“Kobe’s contributions on and off the court are remarkable,” the museum’s interim director Spencer Crew said in a statement.

“As a founding donor, he understood the significance of this museum to the nation and the world.

“After postponing the March installation due to COVID-19, we believe now is the perfect moment in history to honor his memory b y p l a c i n g h i s jersey on view.”
