Healthcare providersmust carefully consider the functionality, documentationrequirements, and integration with current computerprograms when selecting an electronic medical record fortheir institution.

There are currently hundreds of electronic medical recordprograms for sale and the review of these products can betime-consuming. This session will illustrate key medicalcoding and compliance issues that must be considered whenselecting a method of electronic healthcare documentation.

Terrence Finn will present an overview of the nature of theself-insured medical plan, including a discussion of the taxprovisions of the Internal Revenue Code and the laborprovisions of the Employee Retirement Income Security Actof 1974 (ERISA). Identify the parties and the contracts thattypically comprise a self-insured medical plan and contrastthe self-insured medical plan benefit structure with theinsurance structure. Mr. Finn will address the flexibility thatemployers can achieve though the avoidance of variousstate-mandated requirements for the insured medical plan.He will also provide an overview of ERISA federalpreemption of certain state laws and its impact on matterssuch as state statutes pertaining to prompt payment,medical malpractice and the determination of benefits.Discover the importance of the provisions of the self-insured plans and the contracts among the parties in thepayment of claims, the recovery of benefits and theresolutions of disputes.

The federal Truth in Lending Law, aka Regulation Z, hasbeen on the books for over 40 years. Every consumer whohas a credit card, auto loan, mortgage or other forms ofcredit has signed Regulation Z documents every timecredit is secured. These same requirements apply tomedical practices and health care providers, yet they areignored and/or violated almost daily, jeopardizing thepractice and the billing company supporting the practice.Mr. Burleigh will review the law, the specific requirementsthat are frequently overlooked, and address how to bringyour clients and your company into compliance.
