FIRST READING: “You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander over Israel.” (1 Sm 5:2b) PSALM: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. (Ps 122) SECOND READING: He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. (Col 1:13) GOSPEL: [Jesus] replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Lk 23:43) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

“The rulers sneered … the soldiers jeered … one of the criminals hang-ing there reviled Jesus.” Is this the King of the Jews, the King of the Universe? If it is so, perhaps his kingdom is not at all what we would expect! In his letter to the laity, St. John Paul II spoke about how Christians share in the kingly mission of Christ. First, “they exercise their kingship as Christians, above all in the spiritual combat in which they seek to overcome in themselves the kingdom of sin.” In other words, before we give any thought to transforming society, we must first allow God to trans-form us. Through daily prayer, regular self-examination, and frequent confession, we can recognize our faults more readily and choose love instead! Second, St. John Paul II writes that the laity “make[s] a gift of themselves so as to serve, in justice and in charity, Jesus who is himself present in all his brothers and sisters, above all in the very least.” Christ’s kingship, and our own participation in it, is requires us to look beyond the privileged of society. It goes beyond networking and struggles of power. It goes with Jesus to the Cross! Still, the kingship of Christ ought to effect society. “The lay faithful are called to restore to creation all its original value … ordering creation to the authentic well-being of humanity.” Jesus does this in a radical way through his death and resurrection. We, too, are invited to bring new life to the world around us. This means holding the world and everything in it as sacred. It means advocating for civil policies that respect life and paying special care to the vulnerable and marginalized in every stage of life. It means being disciples of Jesus, inviting people into authentic love so that one day we will together “be with [him] in Paradise!”

Heal us, Lord, and we shall be healed; save us, and we shall be saved; for it is You we praise. Send relief and healing for all our diseases, our sufferings and our wounds; for You are a merciful and faithful healer. Blessed are You Lord, who heals the sick.

Receive, Lord, in tranquility and peace, the souls of your servants who have departed out of this

present life to be with you. Give them the life that knows no age, the good things that do not pass

away; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What is contemplative prayer? St. Teresa answers: Contemplative prayer [oracion mental] is nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who we know loves us. Contemplative prayer seeks Him “whom my soul loves.” It is Jesus, and in Him, the Father. We seek Him, because to desire Him is always the beginning of love. In this inner prayer we can still meditate, but our attention is fixed on the Lord Himself. In this method of prayer, we each silently choose a personal sacred word as a symbol of our intention to consent to God’s presence within. During the 20 minutes of prayer time, thoughts will naturally come and go, and when necessary we return gently to our sacred word. It is a practice of surrendering, consenting, and of basking in the presence of the Lord. We finish the hour with a book study or DVD series. The Contemplative Prayer group meets each Sunday at 12:15pm in the SMdM chapel. It is open to all: anyone can come at any time—there is no preparation needed. There are about 25 contemplatives who come weekly and others who come when they are able. For more information, please contact Jeannie Johnson at [email protected].

Welcome! Registration forms are available in the Gathering Area, on our website, and in the parish office.

In today’s Gospel, we see a dying man who, in his final hours, is confronted by his own transgressions and brokenness. God’s grace enables him to notice what it means to belong to the kingdom of justice and compassion. He sees this kingdom embodied in Jesus who gazes back at him with welcome. He asks humbly only to be remembered. Jesus, remember us, your stewards.

“[Pope] Benedict XVI reminded us that precisely because it is human, all human activity, including economic activity, must be ethically structured and governed. We must return to the centrality of the human being, to a more ethical vision of activities and of human relationships without the fear of losing something.”

St. Vincent de Paul Santa Maria del Mar

Our human compassion binds us the one to the other—not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.—Nelson Mandela

Inspired by our patron, St. Vincent de Paul, we dedicate our-selves to reach out and minister to the needs of others with love, respect, and support. And we know those needs are great. We probably ask ourselves: “Why me?” or “Why am I the one who gives freely of my time to help others?” yes, it would be so much easier to donate money and let someone else do the work. We are reminded of the “Save a Starfish Story”: A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up and throw it back into the ocean. Someone called out to her, “You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” And then she reached down, picked up a starfish, and threw it back into the ocean. “Made a difference to that one,” she said. Your involvement in our monthly Food Drive is critical to our success in feeding those in need in Flagler County. You may never know the names or see the faces of those we feed, but you can take great comfort knowing that without your help, some of God’s children will go hungry. Thank you so very much for your help this month. You Make a Difference Every Day!

We are in need of ministry members to properly care for and cleanse our Altar Linens. Please consider joining our ministry. Contact Cheryl Everett, 386-237-7107, for more information.

The BeFriender Ministry at Santa Maria del Mar is a lay pastoral care program where trained volunteers provide a listening presence to others by entering into a caring relationship with those in need, providing emotional and spiritual support. Information shared between BeFrienders and those they befriend is strictly confidential. BeFriender Ministry volunteers are screened and trained and receive on-going support through the BeFriender Leaders. If you need a BeFriender visit, would like to suggest a BeFriender for someone else, are interested in becoming a BeFriender volunteer, or simply have questions about the BeFriender Ministry, please contact Jeannie Johnson in the parish office at email [email protected] or office phone (386) 439-2791.

Every Wednesday at 10 am in the LC, Luke Room This ministry provides spiritual and emotional support and the love of Christ to people experiencing grief due to loss, transition, or crisis. The Centering Prayer ministry is dedicated to fostering the process of transformation in Christ through the practices of the Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, reflection/sacred sharing, and enrichment experiences. Centering Prayer is simply a wordless, trusting opening of self to the divine presence. While it is about the simplest form of prayer there is, it allows us to get in touch with our natural intimacy with God deep within us that often gets lost in the busyness of life. Weekly Centering Prayer sessions are held in the Learning Center. If you are interested in learning more, contact Sue McBride, 956-9012.

Every Friday at 10 am in the LC, Bartholomew Room This ministry makes and provides rosaries for the Missions and for parish family members. Rosary-making supplies are furnished, and beginners are given instructions in how to make a rosary. Contact Pat Quinn at 386-439-9650.

November is Florida Adoption Month, a time to celebrate adop-tion finalizations, express thanks to the parents, staff and many stakeholders who work throughout the year to find permanent fami-lies for children in need, and bring attention to the children who are still searching for their forever family. On any given day in Florida, there are more than 800 children available for adoption without an identified family. This includes large sibling groups, teenagers, and children with medical conditions.

For more information on available children, how you can start your adoption journey, and associated benefits, please visit www.adoptflorida.org or call 1-800-96-ADOPT. Together, we can en-sure children without a family can find one who will love and support them!

How will we do this? If you would like to participate in creating our parish Living Memory Wall, send us photos of your loved ones that are serv-ing or have served in the U.S. Military, First Responders, Police, Firefighters, EMT’s, and service civilians (those who assisted in combat). You may include living or deceased family members and friends. Families will be grouped together. Kindly include the following information on the back of your photos: Contact name, address, telephone number, name of loved one, rank (if known), branch of service, combat era (i.e., Af-ghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, World War II, Korean War…), date if killed in action. All photos will be returned. You may mail or bring your photos to the church office Tuesday through Friday weekly. Place your photos in an enve-lope and address as follows: Knights of Columbus Attention: Tony Gasparino Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church 915 North Central Avenue Flagler Beach, FL 32136

Dear Family in Christ, Blessings to you and your family and I thank you for welcoming me to Santa Maria del Mar and our loving Lord for allowing me to come to Santa Maria del Mar. I invite you to participate in a project for our parish family along with your family and friends that will be a cele-bration of love and thanks to our Lord. This project will be a Living Memory Wall of your personal photos of all U.S. Military (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force), First Responders, Police, Firefighters, EMT’s, and service civilians (living and deceased). It will be a wonderful way to remember your family members or friends and a peaceful place to say a prayer for your loved ones. We ask our Lord to continue to bless our parish and our Living Memory Wall.

What is Cursillo? The Cursillo can help in developing a deeper understanding and knowledge of our Catholic faith as well as strengthening our conviction to live and share what is fundamental to being Christian. Calling upon the Holy Spirit for enlighten-ment and guidance, the Cursillo is delivered by a team of religious and lay people who present a series of talks to the candidates “proclaiming the best news of the best reality: That God, in Jesus Christ, loves us….” Throughout the Cursillo weekend the candidates will pray together, attend daily Mass and have an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

Upcoming Retreats:

Men’s (English) Feb. 6-9, 2020 Camp St. John

Women’s (English) Feb. 20-23, 2020 Camp St. John

Gratitude is one of the greatest spiritual practices. It opens our minds, calms our hearts, and rids bitterness of it’s power. The “examen” is a spiritual practice to reflect on how we have responded to God’s work in our lives. This Thanksgiving, consider your own reasons for thankfulness! What Gifts have You given me? How have I Received love from others? How is grace at work in Aspects of my life story? Do I Trust You to continue to bless me? Where have I missed Your movements? Have I used my Talents at the service of other? Do I see a purpose for my life Underway? How can I have the Discipline to thank You daily? Help me give Everything back to You!
