GRAHAM — Senator “no” is nomore.
Tony Foriest is the winner of therace for N.C. Senate District 24,which consists of Alamance andCaswell counties, beating incumbentHugh Webster by 453 votes.■ 16,787 votes for Foriest.■ 16,334 votes for Webster.
Caswell County vot-ers pushed Foriestover with 2,986 votes,compared with Web-ster’s 1,967 there.
In AlamanceCounty, Webster ledForiest by 501 votes.
Webster, 63, is asemi-retired account-
ant, tax and financial adviser and for-mer farmer. He owns homes in Bur-
lington and CaswellCounty and hasserved 12 years in theN.C. Senate.
Democrat Foriest,58, lives in Graham.He is retired fromXerox. He and hiswife, Clara, have twoadult children and a
grandson.Foriest, a former Alamance County
Democratic party chairman, ran forthe District 24 seat in 2004, when helost by nearly 10,000 votes. It wasWebster’s largest-ever margin of vic-tory.

Change was the theme of AnnVaughan’s second campaign forAlamance County commissioner.Voters gave Vaughan her wish onTuesday and made a bit of historyin the process.
Vaughan will be the first womanto serve on the Alamance CountyBoard of Commissioners. Theretired teacher from Mebanetopped incumbent Tim Sutton
and challengerEddie Boswell ina tight race fortwo seats on theboard. IncumbentDoug Fincannonwas re-elected.
County electionrecords are in-complete, but
apparently a woman has neverserved on the board.
Vaughan’s election also makesher the first Democrat elected to
the board since Rickey Moorfieldwon a four-year term in 1992.
Top to bottom, it was a tightrace.■ Vaughan received 14,309 votes,or about 26 percent.■ Fincannon, a Mebane residentwho runs an insurance agency inGraham, came in second with13,580 votes, or 25.04 percent.■ Sutton lost by only 13 votes.Sutton, a three-term commissioner
