Wednesday July 25, 2018 From John Camp Update The year 6 campers are all having a wonderful time at Anglesea this week and my updates from staff have all said that everyone is having a great time and enjoying the activities and staying warm. As you can see in the photos there is even sunshine! They have been down at the beach enjoying the activities there as well! There was some rain yesterday which dampened the clothes but not the spirits and everyone is having a great day today. Pictures tell a thousand words, so here are a few to share! I have no idea about this one! Camp cooking the civilised way Chess Talent

During the holidays Kristof Hoffman in 5A participated in the Victorian Open Chess Tournament at Knox. The tournament took place over 3 days and involved children from 8 to 18 years of age. There were approximately 25 children competing at each year level. Kristof competed in the Under 12 category and played 7 games over the 3 days. Most games took between 40 minutes to an hour for Kristof, however some other games took 2 to 3 hours to complete. Kristof is a keen chess enthusiast and has been playing since he was 5 years old. He enjoys the strategies involved and the fact that he needs to think carefully; he is not so keen on games that are based on luck. An area that

Kristof would like to improve on is openings and contemplating the moves that the opponent will do. He really enjoyed the competition; he did not expect to encounter so many talented chess players. Kristof plans to enter more competitions in the future. Well done Kristof! Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly yesterday: Mollie Killigrew in 2D for displaying a strong motivation to do her best and well

developed critical thinking skills which have resulted in commendable results in all curriculum areas

Ernie Donbavand in 2D for displaying an enthusiastic approach to school and producing excellent results in all areas; he is commended on his outstanding progress and achievement in reading.

Special mention to Ava Fitzgerald Gardener and James Williams, mentioned at assembly, who demonstrated our school norms of Integrity and Collaboration when supporting their class mates this week.

Thank you!

I would also like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of you who have supported the school with Shannon’s passing and the funeral last Tuesday.

From the discussions you had with your children before returning to school to the emails and notes offering support it has been so heart warming and uplifting to see how the Hampton community has responded to support the school, the staff, students and each other at this time.

Last Tuesday our sessions to talk and share about Shannon were very beneficial to students as you will have seen in last week’s newsletter. We have a couple more personal reflections form students this week too.

Over coming weeks I would encourage you to review again the information provided via the original email in the holidays in how to talk with your children about grief. Check in with them and ask them how they are going and what they think and feel about it with the passing of time. If you see any behaviour changes from the normal behaviours of your child please tell your child about the changes and your concerns. If you are still concerned please let you child’s teacher know or contact Sue, Tim or myself. Processing the grief and gaining understanding does take time and new unknown triggers could emerge.

At school this week, a cause of further anxiety for some has been as grades return to the LOTE classroom for Mandarin and Shannon is not there. This class teachers have begun the session with the students in the LOTE room to provide support if required.

Student reflections on Shannon this week…

In Remembrance of Shannon Baker Shannon was the best Chinese teacher we ever had. He was funny, had a

wicked sense of humour and we all had so much fun during Chinese with him. He taught in a funny way, and we learned so much. To get our attention he

would make a duck noise and once he played an elephant noise on YouTube. We had loads of fun and we also learnt a lot about how to speak Chinese and how they run businesses. We made a business called MIGS, which had to be suitable for Chinese customers. He was the best Chinese teacher ever! We

would like to thank him for everything he did for us.

Following on from previous Parents’ Association discussions last semester I am investigating two topics for parent information sessions; one on body image and mental health and one on mental health more generally, both aimed at how parents can understand the issues and support their children. If you have any preference or requests on these two topics please let me know.

Finally, I have included below some information about an upcoming parent seminar from Dr Michael Carr-Gregg this weekend that you may find useful. This session has been planned by the Victorian Parents Council and is co hosted with Brighton Grammar. See below for more information.
