We are so proud of our athletes! If you step back from the Track, Soccer and Volleyball frenzy and consider just how likely is it that our teens would be participating in a healthy and competitive sports program; you realize how far each of them has come. Whether the team is on a winning streak or not, these young people have devoted a considerable amount of time in rigorous activity, building team connections and practicing good sportsmanship and challenging themselves to reach goals for which they never thought they would be striving. Although many of our students enroll at TCS stating “I used to play….”, most of our students have no previous experience on a school related sports team. Just as there is a core of academic knowledge that we expect our students to learn in their K-12 years, there is also a set of social experiences that we believe all kids should enjoy. It is such a joy to see their enthusiasm, watch their confidence grow and realize that they are creating memories and relationships that will last a lifetime! Our fans, too, have an opportunity they might not enjoy if not at TCS. Being a part of the cheering fans, rooting for the players and experiencing the feeling of belonging to a team is an important aspect of maturing. Every community has an array of underground values and lessons. Supporting every handbook, manual and list of training tenets is a fabric of unspoken values that emerge over time and represent the heart of an institution. Values such as integrity, honesty, compassion, and trust cannot be defined or legislated, but they do exist in the unwritten and unspoken interactions and expectations of every family, company and nation. When our children are educated in massive communities where the environment is chaotic and the messages are unclear, they may miss out on those messages. They may graduate from high school with a significantly underdeveloped sense of who they are and how they impact the community of individuals with whom they live, work and play. Small, intentional settings, like TCS, allow our students to see themselves as supportive, loyal, creative, impactful members of their peer group and the larger society in which they interact. I love hearing our parents “complain” in a way that also exudes pride about their teen begging for permission to attend a school related activity that may involve driving across town or rearranging the family schedule. For years many of our parents wanted their child to feel like a part of their school community. They longed to have their teen involved in school activities instead of sitting at home engrossed in solitary activities. Now, although the demand on their time and energy has increased, they can enjoy watching their child enjoy many of the same activities that brought them joy in their own adolescence. There is value in play. Whether a child is involved in athletics or arts, they are exposed to experiences and opportunities that shape their sense of self and develop skills that enhance their relationships. As our sports, drama, music, outdoor activities, technology, horticulture and philanthropic opportunities unfold, take time to acknowledge and appreciate the activity your child invests their time, talent and energy. It will enrich the lives of both you and your teen! To this point, the participation of our students and families in our upcoming Campus Appreciation Day and the Cougar Classic Car Show and Bazaar is an excellent example of how our students jump at the chance to participate and contribute! ENJOY!

PAC PICKS THIS WEEK

Indirect Giving - Have you signed up?

An easy way to support TCS is through its partnerships with various companies you use every day such as Amazon, Box Tops, GA Natural Gas, Kroger, Publix and Target. If you have not signed up for these different programs, keep this easy cheat sheet handy and do it while you wait in carpool! These dollars support various program enhancements around TCS.

Amazon Smile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable

organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. Go to

www.smile.amazon.com and designate The Cottage School as your

charity of choice.

Does your family buy Ziploc bags, Kleenex or General Mills products? These are just a few of the brands that are part of the BoxTops program. This is easy, just cut out the BoxTops logo and send in to school with your child. Start saving now and watch for October contest information coming out soon.

Switch and become a Georgia Natural Gas customer and help your school earn money!

Georgia Natural Gas will donate $5 every month to your school just

for paying your natural gas bill. If you are not already signed up, please

visit www.onlygng.com/TRUEBLUECHOICE for program details.

Kroger offers support of TCS through their Community Rewards program. You can participate by going to Kroger.com, registering your card and then choosing TCS (school #36692) under ‘Community Rewards’. Every time you use your Kroger number for gas or groceries, TCS gets credit.

If you don’t already have one, get your Publix key-chain sized card in the Central Administration Office. Pick up enough to give to friends and family! Each time you shop, present your card at the checkout counter and Publix will donate a percentage of your purchase to TCS.

Target enables customers to specify TCS as the recipient of a percentage of sales charged to their Target credit card. If you don’t currently have one, inquire the next time you shop at Target. It is simple and easy to sign-up for.

Senior Trip

Our senior trip has been planned for May 3rd

– May 8th, 2015. It will be a 5 day cruise to the Bahamas

aboard the Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas. We will sail out of Port Canaveral, Florida, making stops at CocoCay and Nassau and enjoy one day at sea. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the seniors to spend time together, making lasting memories. We would like all of our seniors to be able to participate in this event. But, this trip should be considered a privilege, something to be earned. For a student to be eligible to participate in this trip, they will need to be current with all of their schoolwork, with satisfactory grades in each of their classes. Their academic success must come first! In addition, we expect each student to demonstrate mature, responsible and trustworthy behavior throughout the school year. Student safety will be our primary concern and we will do everything in our power to ensure this. Lastly, seniors who plan on going on the cruise must have $115 in savings at TCS. The cost of the trip will be approximately $950.00. This includes port charges, taxes and all gratuities. This also includes round trip transportation between The Cottage School and Port Canaveral on a motor coach. The payments will be collected in three parts: 1. $250.00 deposit due 10/27/14 2. $350.00 payment due 12/5/14 3. $350.00 (approx.) payment due 1/26/15 There will be partial refunds available under some circumstances. Individual travelers insurance is not included in this trip. Contact Jennifer Sudbury at [email protected] or 770-356-4098 if you have any questions. Student Full Name HR Teacher (Please write name as it appears on student’s birth certificate or passport. Passport name must match the name I submit to the cruise company this month) My child has my permission to go on the Senior Cruise. I have enclosed a deposit of $250.00 Parent Signature

Please return this form with your deposit check – made out to The Cottage School

to Jennifer Sudbury by 10/27/14.

PLEASE ATTACH A COPY OF THE PASSPORT OR SEND IT IN SO A COPY CAN BE MADE! If you don’t have a passport, please get one ASAP!
