“We are very concernedabout this theft,” said Chief GaryCrowell. “This is an absolute pri-ority investigation. We are work-ing co-operatively with theHamilton Police and otherpolice agencies to commit anyand all assistance and resourcesrequired to recover the handgunand other equipment.”

Crowell praised a Dundasresident for a quick call to theHamilton Police that led toTuesday’s recovery of the stolencar.

“We are depending on thepublic, like the resident who hasalready come forward, to assistus with the investigation,” thechief said.

According to Halton police,the missing car was located in aresidential area of Dundas, ashort distance from where it hadbeen stolen.

Investigators are reviewingthe circumstances of the theft. Ithas yet to be determined howthe vehicle was entered. Therecovered vehicle showed nosign of having been forciblyentered. A spare set of keys was

contained inside the car andthey are still missing.

The Halton PoliceProfessional Standards Bureauis conducting an internal inves-tigation to ensure that all serv-ice policies and directives werefollowed. Crowell is awaiting areport on their findings.

The officer whose car wasstolen is a 22-year veteran detec-tive constable assigned to anundercover position on a jointforces operation. He continuesin that capacity.

Halton Police communica-tions officer Sgt. Peter Paynesaid the officer involved was inproper possession of the car,which is a pool vehicle, used atHalton police headquarters.

“Detective vehicles are usedin an ongoing capacity, very fre-quently, for investigations,” hesaid. “This vehicle was on loanto the investigator.”

Payne said there are occa-sions when officers take policevehicles home, such as duringan investigation or when region-al traffic officers are on call.

However, he refused to saywhether the car was parked atthe officer's residence or if it wasinvolved in an investigationwhen it was stolen. He alsodeclined to say where the officerlives or works.

The Hamilton Police Serviceis leading the investigation intothe theft.
