LEADERSNEWS Twenty teachers from EPS headed to the Melbourne Convention Centre for training and development on using digital technologies in the classroom. The collegiality and fun such a diverse group of teachers experienced was the highlight, spending 2 days and nights together lead to many professional and social moments! We were able to fund the conference and accommodation from the Schools Initiative grant applied for by Sue Gaardboe, and staff paid for their airfares and willingly gave up their weekend to up skill themselves in a new and growing area of the Australian Curriculum. After going to the Digital Technologies conference on Friday, in one of the sessions (My teaching has become robotic) we were introduced to a robot called Dash & Dot. The thing that I thought was great about this robot was that it has coding programs to suit R-7. The other session I really enjoyed was called make to learn: we used little bit kits, which are magnetic, to make complete circuits. I thought they were great, as a teacher (who has no idea about circuits) it was a very simple way for students to explore circuits in a safe way. If this is explored in R-2 classes imagine the things they could do in Year 7! - Alex Hatzi, Room 10 teacher. I am very pleased to announce Alex has won a permanent teaching position and we look forward to her being part of the EPS community for many years. I was really inspired by the conversations between teachers, focussing on how to embed digital technologies into teaching in other curriculum areas - from using Makey Makey to teach music to a digital storytelling app to create an identification chart in Biology. Twenty teachers from EPS headed to the Melbourne Convention Centre for training and development on using digital technologies in the classroom. The collegiality and fun such a

diverse group of teachers experienced was the highlight, spending 2 days and nights together lead to many professional and social moments! We were able to fund the conference and accommodation from the Schools Initiative grant applied for by Sue Gaardboe, and staff paid for their

airfares and willingly gave up their weekend to up skill themselves in a new and growing area of the Australian Curriculum. “After going to the Digital Technologies conference on Friday, in one of the sessions (My teaching has become robotic) we were introduced to a robot called Dash & Dot. UniSA are seconding Sue Gaardboe next term to be involved in the initial stage of setting up an Innovative Learning space at UniSA's Magill campus. It's a really exciting project, and we are delighted she will be involved and they have recognised her amazing talent in this field. Next week is Parent Week in Education, and we discussed opening classrooms to share the innovative learning taking place across the school. We have decided to delay the opportunity to showcase our work in digital technologies until next term, once teachers have had a chance to implement new learning. Suggested timing and sharing ideas will be sought from School Councillors at our next meeting. A reminder that RaN training for volunteers is on in the Resource Centre this Thursday, September 8th, from 1-3 pm. A certificate will be provided which needs updating every 3 years. This Friday evening is Disco night, and we look forward to some fun with our school DJs, Jordan and Sue B. A few surprises and prizes in store so buy your tickets now. Kathy Papps Neighbours are constantly asking us to monitor parking around the school at drop off and pickup time- please be mindful that some neighbours are blocked in by inconsiderate parking, and Mitcham Council has been asked to issue fines for illegal parking. Now the warmer weather is here a small walk or meeting on a street corner may ease some of the congestion. Please be aware that our SunSmart Hat Policy is now enforced and hats are available from the Uniform Shop for $7.50 or $13.

SCIENCE WEEK COMPETITION

The students in years 3-7 were challenged to think of a problem, and create a program which would enable a full sized BB8 to help someone. We had some wonderfully imaginative entries. Winners will be announced at assembly on Friday.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION Mitcham Plains Partnership Schools entered three teams into the robocup junior: RoboMagix - Isobel, Amaya and Lucas from Colonel Light Gardens PS Zombies R Us - Jack and Oliver from Edwardstown PS Legendary X and Y - Brock from Westbourne Park and Nick from Edwardstown. They were up against teams who had competed previously and who were very well equipped with robot blocks, lego sets etc etc. Our teams did a great job of sharing the lego and rebuilding the robots between each other's performances. The points were awarded as such - 60% actual performance and 40% interview and journal. All our teams performed very well - the robots did everything we hoped they would! Robomagix and Zombies R Us made it to the top 4 finals. The overall winners of the 2016 ROBOcup Junior Dance competition was Robomagix from Colonel Liight Gardens. The teams' performances have been uploaded to youtube as unlisted videos - they can’t be searched and only people with the link can view them. Sun Smart Policy - HATS ON This policy is for implementation throughout the year when the UV radiation levels are 3 and above, which is always from 1 September to 30 April. The purpose of the policy is to ensure that all children attending our school are protected from skin damage caused by the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. As part of general skin-protection strategies from 1 September to 30 April:

Children will wear broad brimmed or legionnaires hats which protect the face, neck and ears whenever they are outside eg: sport, sports carnivals, outdoor excursions, lunch and recess activities and lessons.

Children who do not have their hats with them will sit in a designated area protected from the sun.

Children will be encouraged to seek out and use available areas of shade for outdoor play activities.

Outdoor activities will be held in areas of shade whenever possible.

Teachers will use a combination of skin protection measures when planning outdoor events e.g. camps, sporting activities, swimming carnivals

Teachers will schedule outdoor activities outside peak sun protection times whenever possible. The UV forecast and peak sun protection times each day can be sourced from the Bureau of Meteorology (www.bom.gov.au/sa/uv/ ) or SunSmart app and/or widget (https://www.cancersa.org.au/cut-my-risk/sunsmart/resources/sunsmart-app-and-widget

FRENCH DAY Bonjour ! Our French Day this year will be held on Friday 23rd September (Term 3, Week 9)

The whole school can be involved in these ways:

French Lunch – Ham and cheese baguettes will be available to order for $4. Orders must be received at the bookroom no later than Friday 16th September (next week). Order forms will be sent out with children. Spare forms will also be available at the bookroom.

Students will be encouraged to dress in French theme on the day. This may be simply

wearing any combination of the French colours, blue, white and red (bleu, blanc, rouge). It doesn’t have to be all three. If they prefer, children may like to dress as a typical French character.

French Assembly – you are invited to attend the whole school assembly which will showcase

some work done in class as well as highlights of the French Day activities, such as a fashion parade.

What to wear?!! Possibilities include famous monuments, frogs, snails, poodles, baguettes, musketeers, artists, ballet dancers, fashion designers, Nicolas Baudin, the explorer, Asterix or Ratatouille characters, Tintin, Smurf, the Little Prince, Madeline, T’choupi, Barbapapa, chefs, characters from French fairy tales first written by Charles Perrault, such as Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Cinderella and Bluebeard. A simple beret or striped t-shirt and scarf can make a French outfit. Our recent connections with Reunion Island, a French department off the coast of Africa, allow for a new range of dress-ups : chameleon, dodo bird, volcano, tropical fruits and island dancers. Perhaps a Renault car or a bottle of French perfume? It is always a very colourful day. Merci. Madame Lyn Empen

To Warren and Dean for behind the scenes….again removing the soil from soccer oval. Getting ready for summer cricket season. Good job boys!
