  • From the Pastor 15”Jesus says: ’I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have

given you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the fine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. — John 15:1-4

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is no coincidence that summer in creation and summer among God’s people stretch out before us as a sea of green. Both creation and ordinary time in the church are seasons of growth, fruitfulness, and harvest.

One parsonage I lived in had a trellis of grapevines. I learned that the vine stock produced many branches, but not all of them produced fruit. Some branches took the nu-trition from the vine but produced only leaves, leaves, and more leaves. I learned that pruning away those non-fruit bearing branches meant more nutrition for those bearing fruit, resulting in more and sweeter grapes.

In our spiritual lives, it is easy to be like those leafy branches—taking and taking the nutrition of God’s Word and Sacraments but not putting it to use in serving others. It’s even easier to forget altogether that we are part of the vine and not get any nutrition at all. But then we wither and die.

God created us to bear fruit—Jesus redeemed us to bear fruit—the Spirit empowers us to bear fruit. So be sure to remain connected to the vine, Jesus.

This summer, there will be additional opportunities to grow your faith on Summer Wednesdays 1 & 3 from 6:00-7:30 PM.

    See you in worship!

    1. You go into the hospital. 2. You are discharged from the hospital. 3. You are facing a major decision. 4. You become pregnant. 5. You are considering adoption. 6. You have a miscarriage. 7. You are considering marriage or divorce. 8. You or a loved one is dying.

    SPONSORSHIP

OPPORTUNITIES Help to adorn the house of God and share the Good News with others by being a sponsor. You can designate your sponsor-ship in honor of a special occasion or in memory of a loved one, or simply to the glory of God. We have updated and ex-panded sponsorship opportunities to en-courage many to participate. The flower chart and sponsorship forms are in the ves-tibule between the Gathering Space and the nave or are available from the church office.

    Bulletin—$30/week Altar Flowers — $40/week Disciples’ Weekly — $5/week Eternal Candle — $10/week Parish Visitor Newsletter — $20/month

Use electronic giving, available through the church office. You decide how

much, how often, and for what purposes. It comes right out of your bank account. It is safe, reliable, and does the work for you, even when you are away.

Read the Bible daily — listen to what God is saying to you. Pray daily. Serve others.

Don’t be satisfied with a Linus* life. Start today to develop a committed relationship with God and discover what you’ve been missing!

*name changes to protect the guilty.

  • The Importance of Commitment

Nearly every aspect of our lives involves commitment of one sort or another. We commit to someone in a relationship. We commit to getting our kids to sporting team practice or music lessons. We commit to paying the utility companies for the services they provide. We commit to paying the cleaning ser-vice, the lawn service, the hair salon and barber shop. We commit to paying our taxes.

These commitments are important for the covenants that depend upon them. We would not expect the lawn guy to work without being paid or be surprised at the heat shutoff if we failed to pay the bill.

But somehow many Christians expect the church to operate for free. Take the ex-ample of Linus*. Linus was baptized and confirmed in the church. When he is in the hospital, he expects the pastor to visit. He expects to be married in the church, to have his children baptized and confirmed in the church. He expects to be buried from the church. Linus comes to church 2 or 3 times a year and puts a dollar in the plate each time. In Linus’ imagination, the church disappears when he is not there—has no needs, no expenses. And then, whenever he needs it, it just miraculously pops up to provide. Linus is not materially poor—he just has no committed relation-ship with God.

A friend of mine recently described the importance of commitment this way: “When a person joins the church, professing faith in Christ and making the promises of faith, it is a two-way commitment—the person commits to supporting the church and the church commits to supporting them. This two-way commitment includes time, talents/skills, and money.”

Of course, there are those who cannot support the church financially—they are poor and do not have enough for food and clothing. But even the poorest of the poor can make a commitment to be present in worship, pray for the church, be part of the ministries, and give of themselves.

Most of us do not fit into that category. Most of us have been blessed abundantly by God with more than we need. Making an ongoing commitment to the church enables us together to provide the Gospel ministry God has called to do.

You can develop a committed relationship with God in several ways: Choose to worship weekly, or as often as possible. Set aside a portion of your income each week—10% is a biblical goal.

Use an envelope-either that you received or that you take from the pew rack.

Reaching out to one another and to others in worship, fellowship, and witness to JESUS CHRIST

PHASE 2 is now beginning. Brookline Masonry Contractors has begun the work to restore the masonry on the front of the building. We need to raise $150,000 for this project over and above our current operating needs. Gifts designated for this project will go into the Church Renewal Fund; special envelopes for this purpose are in the back of the church. Regular Envelope gifts for “Mortgage” will go toward this project. In addition, undesignated special gifts coming to the church will be put toward this project.

How can you help? If you are a Thrivent member, form a Thrivent Action Team to raise money for this. [for more information, see www.Thrivent.com ] or hold a yard sale.

Mission Strategic Process Mission Team: Fred Botterbusch, Chris Kann, Steve Shipman, Bill Everhart, Pastor Schlegel

One of the ideas that came out of this process will have a trial run this summer… Summer Wednesdays 1 & 3.

On the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of July and August, people of all ages are invited to share supper, faith activities and a God encounter.

Spread the word! If you are interested in helping, please let Pastor Schlegel know. [email protected] or 495-8894.

We are also in the process of interviewing members of the community to discov-er their perceptions of the needs of the community.

Disciples Serve— Put your faith into action

Help with the Community Meal on the 2nd Sunday of the month—sign up in the book in the narthex or with Marc or Jen Olson.

Help with Summer Wednesdays — we need Approved Adults, supper hosts, activity leaders, set-up people, conversation leaders, and prayer leaders. Please sign up with Pastor Schlegel.
