Welcome Kindergarten Class of 2016
notable individual winner was
young Phoebe Paulston who won
many sections in the cooking, flow-
er and vegetable decorations to win
the overall champion exhibitor. It
has been a wonderful week for Wee
Waa Public School.
This week has certainly started with
a bang! Monday morning saw two
groups of students head off to par-
ticipate in either the PSSA knock out
Rugby League in Moree or the Nar-
rabri Eisteddfod. Our boys in the
league team took on the might of
Moree Public who fielded a team
almost totally made up of Year 6
boys. The final score showed how
close our boys went to a memora-
ble victory, beaten 14 to 12 with 3
tries each and only a solitary con-
version from Moree being the
difference. Congratulations to
coaches Toomey and Mason on
achieving such a great team effort.
Well done to all the boys who rep-
resented our school.
Winners were certainly grinners
with our Infants students winning
both the blue ribbon choir event
and the Infants Percussion group.
The students looked fantastic in
their uniform and their singing was
excellent scoring 90/100 to beat
both Narrabri West and St Xaviers
Infants choirs. Congratulations to
Miss Macpherson on producing
such a wonderful sound and to all
our staff on developing such a fine
disciplined performance. My mag-
nificent nine Year 2 students who
played drums did a fantastic job and
wowed the judge to score 88/100.
Great job Year 2!
Finally I cannot finish without mak-
ing a comment on the wonderful
Wee Waa show held over the week-
end. The entire show was a great
success and showed what a resilient
community we have here that even
in the worst of times we still put
forward our best. The school work
section was a magnificent display of
the range of work done across all
the district schools. Our kindergar-
ten students produced 11 of the 15
winners in their section and Year 5
won the Primary class section. A

COPPLESON, Sir Victor Marcus (1893-1965), Surgeon
Victor was born in Wee Waa and educated at the Wee Waa Public School, Syd-
ney Grammar School and St Andrews College, University of Sydney (M.B., Ch.M.,
1915). In November 1915 he joined the Australian Naval and Military Expedition-
ary Force to New Guinea. In March 1916 as a Captain he sailed for the Middle
East and in June went to France with the 15th Field Ambulance. He had several
spells as regimental medical officer in France and Belgium and on 12 May 1917
was wounded at Bullecourt. He was promoted Major on 28 February 1918. Vic-
tor worked as a house surgeon at St George’s Hospital, London, from April 1919;
he was demobilized in London at the end of that year. He also worked and
gained experience at Westminster and Middlesex Hospitals; he became a fellow
of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1921.
Victor had remained on the reserve of officers and when WWII started, he joined
up in January 1941 as a Lieutenant-Colonel, he arrived in the Middle East and
went on to serve in Greece and Crete. From 1926 he had been an honorary med-
ical adviser to the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia and wrote several arti-
cles on the shark peril before publishing Shark Attack in 1958 the book brought
him world recognition.
With Judge Adrian Curlewis he helped organize the first International Convention
on Life Saving Techniques, held in Sydney in 1960: as a result mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation was universally adopted. Victor was knighted in 1964 for his ser-
vices to medicine.
The Kokoda Challenge
Year 5 held a successful cupcake stall last week. The funds raised
will be used for the Year 6 farewell at the end of the year.
In July Miss Raymond and Mrs Currey are heading to the gold coast to take part in one of the toughest team endur-ance events in Australia…. the Kokoda Challenge! It is a gruelling, cross-country trek through the spectacular Gold Coast hinterland. The time limit for completion is 39 hours.
The time limit of 39 hours is in honour of the 39th Militia, who were the first troops to defend Australia at Kokoda.
Each team of four participants (with the help of their Support Crew) treks the course along fire trails, crossing 12 creeks
and climbing summits of 5,000m of vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the
spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.
This is a preparation event for Miss Raymond as she tackles the real Kokoda Track later this year.
Please support our dedicated teachers as they take part in this worthwhile event. Miss Raymond and Mrs Currey will
hold a cake stall on Friday 27th May. Donations of cakes etc to sell would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

WHY IS THERE A COMPULSORY FUNDRAISING PART TO THIS EVENT? WHAT ARE WE FUNDRAISING FOR?
You are fundraising for The Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) which is a 14 month experiential program for
16 – 18 year olds.
The KCYP selects applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and at different stages in their lives to work to-
gether in a unique team building program designed for learning the life skills and values of courage, endurance,
mateship and sacrifice.
Once they have completed 20 weeks of training the young people embark on a trip of a life time – The Kokoda Trail.
Whilst in PNG and completing the trail our young people participate in humanitarian activities such as rebuilding of
the schools and villages. On return to Australia before graduating from the KCYP, the young people (more often
than not now young adults) are committed to giving back to their local communities through a 6 month community
services program. Each young person is fully funded and costs the association $10,000.
Our primary school program consists of curriculum based modules focusing on issues around food and nutrition, personal safe-ty, physical activity, cyber safety, safety with medicine and legal drugs; tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.
By taking a comprehensive approach to drug and health education our modules help children to develop relationship skills,
positive communication (both face to face and online), problem solving and decision making skills.
We provide students the opportunity to develop strategies, and practise the skills required to avoid the harms associated with
an unhealthy lifestyle.
Each module presents an issue or issues with memorable and engaging activities. Our specially trained educators ensure that
all messages are age-appropriate, relevant and enhance and support the messages taught in Australian schools.
If you would like your child to participate in this program please sign the permission note below and return it to school with $5
per student no later than Monday 23rd May. The school is subsiding the lessons which would normally cost $11 per student.
