  • Buddhaghosa shows his acquaintance with Milinda Panho. This is very clear from 2 passages pointed out by Ryns Davids, one from Buddhaghosa's commentary on the Mahaparinibbana Sutta, and the other from his comment on the Ambatta sutta (Digha Nikaya, 3, iii), where the great exegete refers to and quotes from the convensation between Milinda and Nagasena.

  • There is no doubt that Buddhaghosa indded knew the Milndha panho.

Mrs/ Ryns David point out that the questions of King Milinda 'must have been written some considerable time before Buddhaghosa".

  • Sumangalavilasini - it makes mention of the four vedas - rigveda, yajurveda, samaveda and athabbana veda.

  • Prof. kapila also mentioned, should be learned the verse.

  • Sanghapala : taking the consent of the revered Sanghapala who is wise, whho is pure and devoted to silas, who observes the rules of vinaya and who is devoted to the order and whose mind is full of the qualities of forbearance, delight and love, etc, and who belongs to the family of the dwellers of the Mahavihara who are the famous theras and who are the foremost amongst the vibhajjavadins, this has been composed by me for the long existence of the True law.

Visuddhimagga has been finished in 58 chapters without any obstacle.

  • Dhammakirtti also records that the wonder struck theras of the Mahavihara likened the author of the Visuddhi Magga to maitreya and it will be observed that Buddhaghosa also reminds himself of the two final verses the translation of which is as follows:

"At the last birth as a human being, seeing Maitteyya who is the great sage, who is the foremost of all men, who is the lord and who is devoted to the welfare of all beings and listening to the preaching of the true law of the wise, I may shine in the order of the JIna, having obtained the best fruit. "

  • can't understandable at all.

  • As we have seen from the quotations made from the introductory verses of the commentaries, Buddhaghosa says that Mahinda briught the Atthakatha (rehearsed by five hundred Bhikkhus at the first council) to Ceylon, and in the Sumangalavilasini, he speaks of Mahinda as the persons who not only brought the Atthakatha into Ceylon but also rendered it into Sihalese for the good of the inhabitants of the Island. This confirms the tradition of the Mahavamsa which attributed the authorship of the whole of the sihalese Atthakatha to Mahinda.
