Ms. Hanley’s AP Chemistry Class

Welcome to AP Chemistry! Congratulations on successfully completing your first year of chemistry. Now, we are about to build upon your previous knowledge from Regents Chemistry and learn even more about the world of chemistry. AP Chemistry is a difficult subject that requires a lot of hard work in both inside and outside the classroom.

AP Chemistry is aligned with a first year college chemistry course, which means we move at a very fast pace. It is the responsibility of the student to be prepared to learn every day. If a student is having difficulty with a topic or misses a class for any reason, that student needs to make up any classwork on their own or in extra help. Students should also be independently researching any topic they are struggling with by reading the textbook, watching videos, performing an internet search, etc. to ensure they are keeping up with the speed of the course.

Grading Policy:

Test: 50%

Each test is designed to model the AP exam. Each test will have multiple choice questions and free response questions. All tests are timed, and any unanswered questions will be marked incorrect. Students are allowed to use calculators for the multiple choice only.

Test will be announced at least 2 days prior to being given. Test will cover class notes, homework and classwork problems, lab activities, textbook assignments, and video assignments.

Homework: 5%

Students will be assigned homework problems from the textbook and on separate worksheets. The homework problems will be checked for completion and correctness. There will be a Homework Quiz at the end of every unit. This will be given in class and will model the homework problems assigned during the unit. They will be timed and announced at least one day prior, which is why it is important for students to be completing all homework assignments as the unit

progresses. Any missed quiz due to an absence from class will require the student to take the quiz the next time they are in class.

Quizzes: 20 %

Quizzes are both announced and unannounced and will be comprised of multiple choice, fill in, and short responses. In addition, quizzes can range from calculations problems, pre-lab questions, written response to assigned videos and unit practice problems. Any missed quiz due to an absence from class will require the student to take the quiz the next time they are in class.

Labs: 25%

Lab activities are very important to the AP curriculum. The AP exam requires students to analyze and interpret experimental data. The questions require students to have a deep understanding of the curriculum and experimental data, rather than just memorization. Lab activities are designed for students to practice the skills they need to answer the questions. Students will also be completing “Guided Inquiry” labs where the students will design their own procedure. I will keep all completed labs in the classroom for students to take home at the end of the school year. This allows students to have a Lab Portfolio should colleges request one.

Students are expected to: Read the entire lab (including conclusion questions) the day before

performing the lab. All prelab questions must be completed before the start of the lab. If a

student does not answer the prelab question, they will lose points on their lab.

Follow all safety guidelines and procedures. Students must hand in a completed lab with a completed cover sheet (on the

following page) stapled to the front. I will not accept a lab without a cover sheet.

All calculations, analysis, and conclusion questions must have the accompanying work shown for credit. NO WORK - NO CREDIT.

Late labs will be deducted 10 points every day it is late. Plagiarism of any work will be handle by school policy. Just as Regents Chemistry, there are no make-ups for missed labs.

Extra Help

If at any time during this course a student “falls behind” or is having difficulty comprehending the topic, he/she is responsible for seeking extra help. I will be available Tuesday and Thursday from 1:55 PM - 2:25 PM and Wednesday mornings at

7:15 AM. There will be a sign-in book for extra help so we can keep track of topics you want me to cover and how often you attend. Extra help is a great time for students to ask questions and work on problems they encountered during class.

Attendance

Students must be seated in their desks and working on the “Do Now” when the bell rings in order to not be marked “tardy”. Students must remain in their seats at the end of class until dismissed by the instructor. Students are responsible for making up any missed assignments and obtaining any missed notes when absent (excused or unexcused absences).

Learning Environment

Students are expected to adhere to the rules and behavior guidelines as outlined in The Patchogue Medford High School Student Handbook. Respect for the teacher and classmates are expected at all times. All students have a right to learn in a safe, respectful and comfortable environment. Disruptions and disturbances will not be tolerated. The instructor reserves the right to reprimand, make seating changes, or use other processes to maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
