    RESEARCH RESULTS 2015

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We appreciate the cooperation and assistance provided by the representatives of the various agricultural companies; their ideas, the herbicide samples they have provided for the research work, as well as their monetary assistance. Funding for the 2015 weed management research program was also provided by the following: Grain Farmers of Ontario Ontario Bean Growers Growing Forward 2 We also appreciate the cooperation of the following seed companies who provided the seed: DeKalb Canada Inc. and

    Pioneer.

Additionally, thank you to the farmer co-operators whom often assist our research by working the land, applying fertilizer,

and planting the crop at our off-station sites.

Technical Assistants Research Technicians Summer Assistants Lynette Brown Meaghan Burns Laura Murray Holly Byker Heather Hendriks Britt Robinson Todd Cowan Elyse Johnston Loretta Steeper Chris Kramer Shelby Johnston Rebecca Stirling Christy Shropshire Laura Louwagie Jenna Wilson Deanna Martin We trust that the information provided by this research will further the science of weed management by assisting companies with the registrations and labeling of their products. This information will also allow research and extension personnel to provide proper herbicide recommendations, thereby enabling growers to achieve consistent, broad spectrum weed control with a minimum of crop damage.

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the effect of adding a fungicide [pyraclostrobin (Headline), pyraclostrobin/fluxapyroxad (Priaxor), pyraclostrobin/metconazole (Twinline), trifoxystrobin/propiconazole (Stratego), azoxystrobin/propiconazole (Quilt) or EXP #1)] to glyphosate on corn injury, disease control, and corn yield. This experiment was maintained weed-free to eliminate the confounding effect of weed interference. At 7, 14 and 28 DAA, there was no injury in corn from the glyphosate + fungicide combinations evaluated. At 18 DAA, there was minimal disease present. At 28 and 56 DAA, the incidence and severity of eyespot in the control was 17 and 37%, respectively. At 28 and 56 DAA, the use of a fungicide reduced eyespot incidence to 0-1 and 2-9%, respectively. There was no appreciable difference in eyespot incidence or severity among the fungicides evaluated. There was no improvement in corn yield with the addition of a fungicide to glyphosate.

At 7, 14, 21 and 28 DAA, there was no injury in corn from the glyphosate + fungicide combinations evaluated. At 14 DAA, there was minimal disease present. At 28 and 56 DAA, the incidence and severity of eyespot in the control was 32 and 40 %, respectively. At 28 and 56 DAA , the use of a fungicide reduced eyespot incidence to 0 and 3-5%, respectively. There was no difference in eyespot incidence or severity among the fungicides evaluated. There was no improvement in corn yield with the addition of a fungicide to glyphosate.

TOLERANCE OF CORN TO HALOSULFURON APPLIED PRE AND POST I

CHRISTY SHROPSHIRE, PETER SIKKEMA EXPERIMENT ID: FC15C2A

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the tolerance of corn to halosulfuron (70 and 140 g/ha) applied at PRE, V1, V3, V5 and V7. In addition, at V5 a

tankmix with glyphosate was included to determine if the adjuvant in Roundup Weathermax accentuates the injury from halosulfuron. At 7, 14, 28 and 56 DAA, halosulfuron (70 and 140 g/ha) applied PRE caused no visible injury in corn, however there was a decrease in height (1X and 2X rate). There was no delay in corn maturity (as indicated by moisture content at harvest) and no decrease in corn yield. In general, halosulfuron (70 and 140 g/ha) caused increasing injury as the POST application was delayed. Halosulfuron (140 g/ha) applied at V1, V3, V5 and V7 caused 0, 23, 36 and 17% corn injury 7 DAA, respectively. The injury decreased with time, as halosulfuron (140 g/ha) applied at V1, V3, V5 and V7 caused 0, 0, 0 and 0% visible corn injury 56 DAA, respectively. There was no increase in injury when halosulfuron was applied in a tankmix with glyphosate. The late application (V5) resulted in a decrease in the height of the corn. There was a decrease in corn yield when halosulfuron was applied at the 2X rate at V5 and V7

The injury decreased with time, as halosulfuron (140 g/ha) applied at V1, V3, V5 and V7 caused 0, 0, 1 and 1% corn injury 56 DAA, respectively. There was a trend to increased injury when halosulfuron was applied in a tankmix with glyphosate. There was no consistent effect of halosulfuron rate or timing on corn height. Halosulfuron (70 and 140 g/ha) applied at V1 caused a decrease in corn height. There was no negative effect on corn yield with the application of halosulfuron with one exception, there was a decrease in corn yield when halosulfuron was applied at the 2X rate at V1.

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the biologically effective rate of halosulfuron applied postemergence in corn.

    At 7, 14 and 28 DAA, halosulfuron at 35 g/ha caused 2, 1 and 0% visible injury, while at 70 g/ha halosulfuron caused 6, 1 and 0% visible injury in corn, respectively. At 7, 14 and 28 DAA, halosulfuron at 560 g/ha caused 14, 1 and 2% visible injury, respectively.

At 14 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf (8.75 g/ha), common ragweed (35 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), lady’s thumb (280 g/ha) and Eastern black nightshade (>560 g/ha).

At 28 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf (35 g/ha), common ragweed (17.5 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), lady’s thumb (140 g/ha) and Eastern black nightshade (>560 g/ha).

At 56 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf (17.5 g/ha), common ragweed (17.5 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), lady’s thumb (140 g/ha) and Eastern black nightshade (>560 g/ha).

In general, there was no difference in corn yield among the herbicide treatments evaluated.

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the biologically effective rate of halosulfuron applied postemergence in corn. At 7, 14 and 28 DAA, halosulfuron at 35 g/ha caused 10, 4 and 0% visible injury, while at halosulfuron at 70 g/ha halosulfuron caused 14, 10 and 0% visible injury in corn, respectively. At 7, 14 and 28 DAA, halosulfuron at 560 g/ha caused 26, 28 and 9% visible injury, respectively. At 14 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf, (8.75 g/ha), green pigweed (35 g/ha), common ragweed (4.375 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), Eastern black nightshade (> 560 g/ha), barnyard grass (> 560 g/ha) and green foxtail (> 560 g/ha). At 28 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf, (8.75 g/ha), green pigweed (35 g/ha), common ragweed (4.375 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), Eastern black nightshade (> 560 g/ha), barnyard grass (> 560 g/ha) and green foxtail (> 560 g/ha). At 56 DAA, the minimum rate of halosulfuron required for 90% control of the following weeds is in brackets: velvetleaf, (8.75 g/ha), green pigweed (17.5 g/ha), common ragweed (4.375 g/ha), lamb’s-quarters (> 560 g/ha), Eastern black nightshade (> 560 g/ha), barnyard grass (> 560 g/ha) and green foxtail (> 560 g/ha). Halosulfuron at 140-560 g/ha resulted in corn yield equivalent to the weed-free control.
