Fairbanks Project SEARCH is ending the third week in the hospital and first week of rotations. Our interns have been busy learning many new skills and honing pre-existing ones. In the classroom, we have begun talking about money management, time management, independence and teamwork. We have taken those lessons out into the community to learn public transportation, communication, and comparison shopping. Take a moment to look at what our interns are doing.

Orientation Weeks 1-2

The first two weeks of the year were spent in the classroom, touring the hospital, completing orientation, and receiving vital training. Our interns spent the first two days being trained in First Aid/CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens. It was great to see them step outside their comfort zones. The class time was spent working on important life skills taught through the Project SEARCH curriculum.

Simon worked hard to get the heart beating again while Lauren learned just how difficult it can be to provide breath to an unconscious individual. A big thank you to Rebecca Bruntz for providing the training.

In class, we spent time practicing basic food preparation. Miriam treated herself to a tasty grilled cheese. The whole group waited patiently for the Purple Line to pick us up for a shopping trip to Walmart. The interns were asked to compare prices of two brands of a variety of items and determine which was the better buy. After all that math, they enjoyed a relaxing meal at Subway. They all agree that math is more fun when you aren’t in the classroom. We hope this is just the first of many outings for our interns this year.
