NAPLAN Online The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Previously these tests have been paper based, but this year these tests will be done online, apart from the Year 3 Writing Test, which will still be done on paper. Participation is expected by all students, however a formal exemption may be granted for a student with a disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student that has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. If you think your child fits this criteria please let the school know and complete the appropriate paperwork. Testing will begin on Tuesday May 14 th and will be completed on May 24 th . Woolworths ‘Earn & Learn’ Once again this year Woolworths is running their ‘Earn & Learn’ program. This program provides schools and early childhood centres with lots of brand new school equipment across all categories including ICT, science, sports, outdoor play equipment, arts and crafts and more. To assist us to gain some of this equipment we ask that you collect your stickers when you shop at Woolworths and stick them onto the sticker sheets and post them in one of the boxes situated in our Administration Office. We have always had wonderful support for this program by our school community and ask you to spread the word amongst family and friends. I would like to thank you in advance for your support with this program as the children at our school certainly enjoy engaging with the new equipment when it arrives. Vision Screening Eyre Eye Centre is pleased to be able to offer a vision screening program at Nicolson Avenue Primary School. Approximately one in five Australian children suffer from an undetected vision problem, or requires ongoing assessment. Good vision is important for a child’s educational, behavioural and social development and to help them reach their full learning potential. Many children continue to experience undetected and unnecessary vision problems and often they assume that how they see is normal. It is important to understand that this is only a screening and does not constitute an examination or diagnosis of vision problems. The purpose of these general vision screenings is to help identify students who may need a comprehensive eye examination. This service is offered free of charge by Eyre Eye Centre in the interest of community health. You will receive a consent form if your child is involved and if you would like to have your child screened please contact our Administration Office.
