Pastor Steve Stratos preached about the wonderful salvation that the prophets foretold but didn’t totally comprehend; a mystery that even angels longed to look into. In verse 12 Peter proclaims, “These very things that have already been known plainly to you by those who preached the good news to you by the [same] Holy Spirit sent from heaven.” (1 Peter 1:12 Amplified Bible) In verse 13 Peter goes on to give three imperatives for how we are to live the transformed life befitting our salvation. First, he writes, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind” What does this mean in modern language? 2. Next, Peter writes, “....be sober” In view of the cultural distractions we have today, why is this important and how can we follow this instruction? What does it mean to THINK differently? 3. The final imperative in verse 13: “....rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” What do you tend to rest your hope upon? 4. In Pastor Ryan’s message, he talked about future grace. “The Old Testament was written to strengthen our hope in God, which is another way of saying, it was written to build our faith in future grace.” John Piper The Purifying Power of Living By Faith in Future Grace, p 154. Give an example of an Old Testament person who lived by future grace (there is a pretty good list in Hebrews 11). 5. In verse 16, the Apostle Peter quotes Leviticus 11:44 reminding Christians of their identity with YHWH: since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”” (1 Peter 1:16, ESV) Pastor and author John Macarthur helps us understand holiness apart from a list of ‘things we don’t do.’ “Holiness essentially defines the Christian’s new nature and conduct in contrast with his pre- salvation lifestyle. The reason for practicing a holy manner of living is that Christians are associated with a holy God and must treat him and his word with respect and reverence. We therefore glorify him best by being like him.” MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1940. Thomas Nelson, NKJV 1997 What are some practical things you can do to live out your holiness in a way that pleases God?

WEEK 6: 1 PETER 1:13 -16 Set your HOPE on the grace that is to be revealed

Peter’s goal in writing is for the church to be the faithful community displaying the presence of God in a world that is against God.

1. Pastor Steve Stratos preached about the wonderful salvation that the prophets foretold but didn’t totally comprehend; a mystery that even angels longed to look into. In verse 12 Peter proclaims, “These very things that have already been known plainly to you by those who preached the good news to you by the[same] Holy Spirit sent from heaven.” (1 Peter 1:12 Amplified Bible)

In verse 13 Peter goes on to give three imperatives for how we are to live the transformed life befitting our salvation. First, he writes, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind…” What does this mean in modern language?

2. Next, Peter writes, “....be sober…” In view of the cultural distractions we have today, why is this important and how can we follow this instruction?

5. In verse 16, the Apostle Peter quotes Leviticus 11:44 reminding Christians of their identity with YHWH:“since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”” (1 Peter 1:16, ESV) Pastor and author JohnMacarthur helps us understand holiness apart from a list of ‘things we don’t do.’

“Holiness essentially defines the Christian’s new nature and conduct in contrast with his pre-salvation lifestyle. The reason for practicing a holy manner of living is that Christians are associated with a holy God and must treat him and his word with respect and reverence. We therefore glorify him best by being like him.” MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1940. Thomas Nelson, NKJV 1997
