Literacy LI: I will be able to write instructions. This literacy lesson is not located on Purple Mash. Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to support your child [What the Ladybird Heard Book.pdf]. Introduction: Say to your child in a ‘news reporter style voice’: “the cow has been stolen”. Can you tell me more about this part in the story? What happened? Main activity: Reread the story up to page 10. Look at the part of the story where Hefty Huge and Lanky Len are planning on stealing the prize cow. Is this a good thing to do? Why not? Convince me! Look at the plan of the farmyard (page 9 and 10). Discuss how they are going to get the cow. What do you think the instructions would be if we decided to help them to steal the cow? What are instructions? How do we write instructions? Model how to write the instructions. Discuss the sort of language used (time conjunctions). E.g. First, Next, Then, Finally. Where do time conjunctions go within a sentence? Why is it important to use the correct time conjunction – e.g. can ‘First’ go at the end of a set of instructions? Why? Get your child to write a set of instructions in their books. Ensure they use time conjunctions and write in a full sentence. Children can add extra detail to make their instructions more exciting. An adjective can be used to describe a noun. E.g. smelly hog or rusty gate. E.g. First you need to open the rusty gate but make sure you are quiet. Next pass the horse and turn right. Then go round the duck pond and past the smelly hog. Last walk as quickly as flash around the stable. Plenary: Get your child to reread their set of instructions aloud. Are these good instructions? Why are they good? How could they be improved?

Phonics Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to help support your child. Phase 3 [Phonics Phase 3 - Lessons 1 to 5.pdf] Phase 5 [Phonics Phase 5 - Lessons 1 to 5.pdf] Religious Education LI: I will be able to recognise influences in my life. Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to help support your child [Religious Education Lesson 1 – People We Trust Pictures.pdf]. Introduction: Discuss with your child what influence means (the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone or something, or the effect itself). What do you think influence means? What people in the world have an influence and why? Who does not have an influence and why? Are all influences good or can some be bad? Main activity: Focus on family members, teachers and famous people. Discuss what people have an influence in their life and why they have an influence. Who do you think has influence in your life? Ask your child to think about why they have an influence. E.g. My mum has an influence because she takes care of me and helps me make the right decisions in life. Your child should choose a person or people who have an influence in their life. Write sentences in their book explaining they have an influence using ‘because’ to explain why. Your child can draw a picture of their influences. Plenary: Share ideas of who influences their lives and why.

THURSDAY

Mathematics LI: I will be able to count in coins.

Use the worksheet found on the school’s website [Maths Lesson 4 – Counting in coins.pdf].

Use the video link to support your child [https://vimeo.com/432401953]. A teaching PowerPoint has been provided to explain and support your child, it can be found on the school’s website [Maths Week 10 Teaching PowerPoint.pdf].

Children can use concrete resources such as pasta, cubes, beads, coins and notes to secure their understanding. The answers for this lesson are available on the schools website. Literacy LI: I will be able to retell a story. This literacy lesson is not located on Purple Mash. Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to support your child [What the Ladybird Heard Book.pdf]. Introduction: Tell your child that they are going to be acting. What does acting mean?

Main activity: Read up to the part of the story where Hefty Huge and Lanky Len are robbing the farm (page 21). What kind of people are they? Discuss how the animals trick them so they get confused as to which animal they are passing. Why is this a good idea?

Discuss what sound each animal makes. E.g. The goose said neigh, the dog said quack. Think about the different sounds that animals make. How do we write these (e.g. miaow, purr)? Can you think of any other examples of onomatopoeia? Are there any other examples in the story? Your child should act each of the animals. They can hold their body in the shape/character of the animal but make the noise it makes in the story. Plenary: Get your child to show their performance to an audience.

Page 5: Week 10 Home Learning Pack - sydneyrussellschool.com · Use the found on the school’s website to teach and support your child. Phase 3 [Phonics Phase 3 - Lessons 1 to 5.pdf] Phase

Phonics Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to help support your child. Phase 3 [Phonics Phase 3 - Lessons 1 to 5.pdf] Phase 5 [Phonics Phase 5 - Lessons 1 to 5.pdf] Science LI: I will be able to describe how to plant a bean.

Use the PDF files found on the school’s website to help support your child [Science Lesson 4 – Teaching PowerPoint on Planting Beans.pdf] [Science Lesson 4 - My Diary of a Bean Plant.pdf] [Science Lesson 4 – Word Mat Bean Plant Diary]. Support your child to plant a bean. Children will learn how to write instructions describing how to plant a bean and state a question they could ask about plants.

FRIDAY

Mathematics LI: I will be able to count and reconginse coins and notes.

Use the worksheet found on the school’s website [Maths Lesson 5 – Counting and Recognising coins and notes.pdf].

A teaching PowerPoint has been provided to explain and support your child, it can be found on the school’s website [Maths Week 10 Teaching PowerPoint.pdf]. No video links are provided for this lesson.

Children can use concrete resources such as pasta, cubes, beads, coins and notes to secure their understanding. The answers for this lesson are available on the schools website. Literacy LI: I will be able to my opinion. This literacy lesson is not located on Purple Mash. Use the PDF file found on the school’s website to support your child. [What the Ladybird Heard Book.pdf]. Introduction: Ask your child to say something they really like about a friend, family members or about themselves. Why is this a nice thing to do? Discuss the word ‘opinion’. Is your opinion always a good thing? When could it be considered a bad thing?

Main activity: Explain that “like” can be substituted for other verbs such as love, prefer, enjoy. Give an example of what you like. Explain the meaning of “dislike” by showing pictures of things you don’t like while using your body language to express what you dislike.

Reread the story up to page 21. Discuss with your child what they liked about the story. Why do you like that part? What about it do you like? Ask for their feedback and get your child to say why they liked that part the most.

Do not settle for “because I do”. Model how to justify effectively. E.g. I liked the part when the ladybird whispered into each animal’s ear because they helped the animals know what Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len had planned.

Discuss how we can use the conjunction ‘because’ to extend our sentences and explain why. Do we all like the same part? Is it ok for us to like different parts? Why? Model writing what your child has said. E.g. I liked the part when the ladybird came up with the plan because it was a clever and cunning idea. Repeat for what your child didn’t like. Your child should independently write sentences on their likes and dislikes of the story within their book. Include the use of ‘because’ to give a good reason as to why. Plenary: Ask your child to reflect on their work. Have they said their likes and dislikes? Have they used ‘because’ well?
