Australia Day is an official national holiday in Australia. It is celebrated on the 26th January annually. This holiday commemorates the landing of the First Fleet in Botany

when Australia was still a group of colonies known as New South Wales and New Holland. In 1824 when the
colonies were named Australia, the 26th of January
was called Australia Day.

Australia Day is public holiday which means no one has to go to school and many people also take the day off work. There are official celebrations but a lot of people also celebrate with friends and families.

How do people celebrate?
Many Aboriginal Australians don’t celebrate Australia day because it celebrates the British landing in 1788. They call it “Invasion Day” or “Survival Day”. Some hold protests on Australia Day.
