Communication, encouragement and teamwork were the core skills that Year 7 students utilised at their recent 3 day camp in Victor Harbor as they problem solved their way through challenging outdoor learning activities. Our students collaborated in camp tribes in activities that included kayaking, mountain bike riding, beach games, flying kiwi, boogie boarding, raft making and a water obstacle course. Students carried water in buckets with holes, designed and constructed pipe-ways to transport water, developed team chants and learnt how to work collaboratively to solve problems. Some students applied a growth mindset and even learnt how to ride a bike. This camp was an integral part of our term one focus on developing a sense of community and the leadership skills required for our Year 7 leadership roles.

Students were very positive about the camp experience and were heard making comments such as "We love this place. We have gotten to know so many people we didn't know before."

RIGHT BITE FOOD STRATEGY

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the “Right Bite”

food strategy is a multi-faceted approach aimed at improving health of children and young people in our societies. School communities are encouraged to supply items from the GREEN or AMBER categories when considering lunches and snacks but also including nutritional and health education across the curriculum and improving sustainability. Food, such as lollies and cakes, should not be used as rewards for student behaviour nor given to other people’s children without consultation. Details of the Policy are on: https://www.decd.sa.gov.au/teaching/projects-and-programs/eat-well-sa/developing-healthy-food-policies-schools-and-preschools

Class Birthday parties at school

The Right Bite strategy also applies to school events as the main target group is children. In these situations, foods from the RED category should not be supplied unless it is considered to be one of the two occasions a term where this is allowed. Classes are still able to have class parties and could potentially celebrate birthdays on these occasions. This consideration needs to be determined through a whole-of-site management approach and documented throughout the year.

Whole School events—Cake Stall 23rd March 2018

While GREEN and AMBER category foods and drinks are encouraged, on selected special occasions RED category foods may also be provided to students. The upcoming Cake Stall would count as one of the two occasions per term where foods that would normally fit into the AMBER and RED category can be supplied. We are encouraging parents making baked goodies to consider low fat, low sugar alternatives and healthier options from the GREEN categories. This process will of course take time to become good practice however we are encouraging all members of our school community to support this positive way forward.

NAPLAN

The 2018 Literacy and Numeracy tests will be held 15th-17th May 2018. Students from Years 3, 5 and 7 will sit tests in Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, Reading and Numeracy. The test results provides us with valuable information of individual student growth over time and also help us to measure the effectiveness of our teaching and learning programmes. All students are encouraged to sit the tests however if you have any concerns, please see your child’s teacher in the first instance.

ROAD SAFETY Please take extra care on Hay & Highfield roads during the school drop off and pick up. Already this year we have had 3 accidents involving students at our school. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. We are hoping to hear from Burnside Council in the near future with steps they are taking to improve pedestrian safety around our school. From the 26th- 28th February, Year 5 students spent 3 days at El Shaddai campsite. Students were organised into 8 teams and participated in a range of outdoor problem solving activities that focussed on developing teamwork skills including; canoeing, raft making, swimming, rock climbing, archery, vertical challenges, the giant swing and laser skirmishing. Students thrived at these challenges, showing courage and determination and often stepping out of their comfort zone to embrace a growth mindset. This was particularly evident during the vertical challenge where students had to build a tower of crates for one team member to climb up to reach the ceiling. The crates were wobbly and the ceiling was high! The teachers were blown away with how the students overcame their fears to complete this challenge and how the teams united to support each group member. It was wonderful to see the Year 5 students interact as one big group, make new friends and work with their peers. It was also great for the teachers to be able to see the students outside of the school setting and get to know them. A huge thank you to the parents Kat W, Susie I, Stephen H, Ged K and George V who attended the camp with us. We couldn’t have done it without you! A big thank you to all of the Year 5 students for making camp a big success!

Sports News Concepts in PYP

At the heart of the Primary Years Program are 8 key concepts. Concept based learning is about big transferable ideas that transcend time, place and situation. Content just focuses on facts, while concept focuses on making sense of those facts and the world around us. We can’t possibly teach everything that is important, but we can teach the big ideas. Concept based learning is a framework to study everything. In our fast changing world, content changes but the concepts remain the same. During each Unit of Inquiry at our school, 2 concepts at a time are introduced as a way of enhancing conceptual understanding. Everything in the unit relates to these big ideas. An example of content versus conceptual understanding is:

Content based: The First Fleet consisted of 11 ships and arrived in Botany Bay in January, 1788.

Concept Based: Historical events, such as the arrival of the First

Fleet in Australia, can be viewed from different perspectives.

The 8 concepts in PYP are:

Year 6/7 Girls AFL Football Clinic

Premier’s Reading Challenge All classes have been given the student reading record for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Reception classes will be doing the challenge within their class. All other year levels rely on students to complete the challenge. Students have until early September to read 12 books, 8 of which need to be from the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist. We have a copy of all three lists: R-2, 3-5 and 6-7 in the library. You can also check the website and type in the name of a book or author to find out if a particular book is on the list: http://www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/prc/pages/home Most books from our library have a PRC sticker (red for R-2, green for 3-5 and yellow for 6-7) on them. However, we do miss books at times so it is best to check the website. Also, if one book from a series has a sticker or is listed as PRC, then all books from that series are considered PRC books. We do encourage students to read widely, so to include a variety of books on their Premier’s Reading Challenge list, not just books from 1 or 2 series. The last 4 books on the student reading record can be any books the child reads, even class readers. Books read aloud to students can be included on the student reading record. Student reading records should be returned to the library once completed. Please see one of the library staff if you have any queries about the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Our Year 6 and 7 girls attended an AFL football clinic at lunch time on 2nd March at Mariner Oval. The clinic was run by 2 of the Crows Women's team, Chelsea Randall and Courtney Roberts and events organiser Madi Hurley.

The girls had a go at goal kicking, taking spectacular marks and tackling and they all had a great time, urging each other on.

Year 3 Central Market Excursion

As part of our Unit of Inquiry “Who We Are”, we are researching healthy and safe relationships and well-being. Rooms 16, 17, 20 and 21 visited the Adelaide Central Market on Tuesday 6th March and Thursday 8th March. Whilst at the market, the children completed a quiz and purchased healthy foods. Once back at school, the students prepared their food to enjoy a shared, healthy lunch.

Re-launch of Recipe Book

Last year the Student Learning Committee (SLC) launched an initiative to create a LPPS Recipe Book. The SLC received a grant to make this initiative possible. A number of technical and other problems hindered this undertaking. We are therefore re-launching this and invite you to participate!

We welcome you to contribute recipes that showcase our school’s diversity, creativity, and commitment to healthy living! The recipe book will also feature photos of the winning entries from the Art Competition last year and will go on sale in Term 2.

How to contribute a recipe—There are two ways to send in your recipe:

1. Send your email address to [email protected] – you will receive a link to a website where you can enter your recipe OR

2. Email [email protected] and we will send you the template to type your recipe into and then return.

On your recipe please indicate what category you think your recipe fits in best: 1. Entrée , 2. Main, 3. Dessert, 4. Lunch box treat, 5.Other

We look forward to your contribution!

At the start of the term Year 2 & Year 4 art classes painted and decorated a feather in their own unique style to be used on a collaborative angel wing artwork.

The idea was that as individuals they could create unique and beautiful artworks but as a team they could create something spectacular. Each mural is symbolic of each team or cohort of Year 4's & Year 2's.

There are approx 120 feathers in each of the murals - the Year 4's created larger feathers.

The Year 4 wings are located in the library and the Year 2 wings are displayed in the art area in the Year 3 block.

Please take the time to see these awe inspiring artworks. Kara Loan, Art

Schools “Clean up Australia Day”

Since 1992, schools across Australia have got stuck in and made a real difference to their environment and local communities through participating in Schools Clean Up Australia Day.

Last year alone, over 2000 schools participated , making an immense contribution to the 14,139 tonnes of rubbish removed in 2017.

On Friday 2nd March, Linden Park participated in Clean Up Australia Day for Schools. First up was our Year 2 classes, who were very busy tidying up the footpath and kerb/gutter outside the school along Hay Road.

It was a fun and engaging way to teach young Australians about the responsible disposal of rubbish, resource recovery and the repercussions of rubbish dumped irresponsibly in the local environment.
