From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith:
“Renewing the Covenant” This summer, in our message series “Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith,” we have been looking at one of the most important figures in the Old Testament. As we start our sixth week, we will continue to look at what Moses, who lived nearly 3500 years ago, still has to teach us for our own lifelong journey of faith. So far Moses’ journey of faith has taught us that gratitude is the foundation for greatness. That
instead of allowing our “limiting beliefs” shackle our progress we need to allow God’s “liberating truths” to set us free. We learned that God rewards those who move forward, doing the possible, by doing the impossible for them if they trust that He will act. Then Moses, well really his father-in-law, taught us that great leaders are delegators, and not merely doers. Finally, last weekend, Moses demonstrated to us that great leaders are willing to sacrifice themselves for those they lead. After the sin of the Golden Calf, the Israelites spend a year at Mount Sinai, as God puts into place a complicated process of renewing the covenant, which they violated through their idolatry. Sin complicates things. They will no longer be a nation of priests; only the Levites will be priests. This process of renewing the covenant is so complicated it takes up the rest of the Book of Exodus (chapters 33-40), the whole Book of Leviticus, and the first 10 chapters of the Book of Numbers. Finally God leads the Israelites to Kadesh Barnea, which was just a few miles from the Promised Land. He tells Moses to select a man from each of the twelve tribes to go spy out the Promise Land for 40 days. When the spies return, they confirm that the land really is a “land flowing with milk and honey,” so very good. However, 10 of the spies focus on the negatives, the obstacles of conquering the land. Only two, Caleb and Joshua, focus on the opportunities. In this we get this weekend’s major lesson: Whatever you focus upon gets bigger. If you focus on your problems they get bigger. If you focus on your opportunities, they get bigger. The Israelites decide to focus on the negatives. They still do not have faith in God, despite all that He has done for them. In fact, they decide to pick a new leader who will lead them back to Egypt, back into slavery. Again God threatens to destroy all of them, and make a great nation out of Moses and his descendants. Again, Moses intervenes for the Israelites. God decides that He will lead the people back into the wilderness, where they will spend a total of 40 years, until all of the people who left Egypt dies, that whole generation, with the exception of Caleb and Joshua. God notes that they, especially Caleb, has a different spirit. What is different about their spirit? They have a fighting spirit; a warrior’s spirit. The Israelites did not enter the Promised Land because they still don’t have a fighting spirit. At times we have to find the spirit of Caleb and warrior up. We need to find the desire to battle the huge obstacles and problems that stand in the way of where we want to go. The warrior’s spirit is much better than the victim’s spirit. Bottom Line: Stop telling God about how big your problems are. Instead start telling your problems about how big your God is. What we want you to know this week: Whatever you focus upon gets bigger. What we want you to do this week: Identify something in your life where you need to “warrior up” by looking at the opportunities more than the problems.

HOW PARENTS CAN TEACH KIDS TO PRAY
Daniel Boyd, the Secretary for the Laity, Family and Life in the diocese of Orlando recently made a video on Linked In about catechesis. I asked that he give some examples so that, instead of just theory people could better relate to practical application and put it to practice in their own life. One of the topics was how to get kids to pray in today’s world where so many things such as technology, pull their attention away from silence, listening and communication with God. Here are some of his suggestions:
Teach kids to direct their pray to a person rather than to the universe. It can be easy to talk to yourself or talk to the air and think it is prayer. But, it is not prayer. For example, many times someone will sit down to pray only to find after 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes that they were thinking about the upcoming ball game or what to say to a co-worker at work or how you will handle the next project or your schedule that evening. There was no communicating taking place with another person. We can talk on the phone with another person and even though we can’t see that person we know they are there because we can hear them. But, we don’t have that same conviction with God because we don’t hear him speaking to us as another person would speak to us. So, the first thing to do is tell kids that God always hears our prayers. He is the best listener ever. And, he speaks to us. We just don’t hear him like we hear another person. He tends to speak to our hearts and give us little inspirations to do good and avoid evil.
For kids, you can have them sit in a chair with their eyes closed and talk to them. Ask them if they think you are there even though they cannot see you. And, of course they will say yes because they recognize your voice. Then tell them that when they talk to God, He is present just like you were when they spoke to you. At that point have them keep their eyes closed and talk to God with the same conviction as they spoke to you knowing you were right by their side.
Another way for kids to begin to see how God is present when they pray, how He speaks to their heart and how they can see Him answering prayer is by keeping a prayer journal. In the journal they can identify where they saw signs of God during the day and during their prayer. Where was God clearly walking with me today? When did I cooperate with Him? When could I have cooperated with Him more?
The best place to pray is anywhere that will give kids at least 5 minutes of silence. It is almost impossible to hear God amidst noise. Shut off the radio, TV, computer and technology and have kids practice communicating with God like they were with you when they had their eyes closed. After they had silent time, let them journal for 5 or 10 minutes. This works well in the morning, but the evening will also work. Really, anytime is the best time. The key is consistency.
At the end of the day, we just have to pray more. The key is to have them just start. That begins prayer experience and once kids have experience in prayer it is much easier to ask them questions to bring them deeper.
So don’t let technology and the modern world prevent you from leading your kids to have a personal relationship with God. He is waiting patiently and with great enthusiasm. He longs for a relationship with your kids. He also longs for a relationship with you.

MOSES Week 6: Renewing the Covenant The Golden Calf had disastrous results for the Israelites. They were to be a nation of priests, but now only the Levites will be priests. They were only to be at Mt. Sinai for 3 days, but now they will be there for over a year, as God sets up more rules, the legal process from renewing the covenant that the Israelites broke. When they do move on, they set up camp only a few miles from the Promise Land, but instead of focusing on their opportunities, the Israelites focus on the problems. They grumble against Moses and God, and want to go back to Egypt. What we want you to know this week: Whatever you focus upon gets bigger. What we want you to do this week: Identify something in your life where you need to “warrior up” by looking at the opportunities more than the problems.
