2021 Key School Priorities:

Dear Families,
Term 3 has been a flurry of activities, events and learning and we are taking it all in our stride. Thank you to our staff who do a wonderful job and keep our school running during our busy weeks.
The vegetable patch has produced the juiciest corn ever according to the students and we are regularly picking our produce for Munch and Crunch and tuckshop.
Congratulations to our Awesome students on their performances at the Burdekin Festival of Arts 2021. Each student represented our school with pride and confidently displayed their dramatic performance skills on stage. A special mention to Claire who won first place for her individual recitation of The Haunted Track (Unknown). Our whole school choir placed 3rd for our version of You have a friend in Me, also communicated using Key Word Sign. The students and Miss Julia were fabulous up on stage and it certainly was a memorable performance.
We welcomed Mrs Tania Cox to our school and developed our ideas and creative writing skills during her workshop. Thank you to the Burdekin Library and Miss Brittany for organising such a wonderful event.
Matty Bowen had a great time working with our Prep and Year 1 students as they painted and made ’items’ that are for an upcoming surprise! It is always a pleasure to have Matty and the Nth Qld Cowboys Ambassadors at our school and our thanks to Luke Wilson and Wilmar Sugar for their support.
Congratulations to Year 3 and 5 students who participated in NAPLAN earlier this year. Preliminary information has been distributed to principals and I am very proud of each and every one of our students. You were A.W.E.S.O.M.E! Individual student reports will be sent home when they have been made available.
Friday 3rd September is Student Free Day. Staff will be attending professional development sessions relating to robotics and coding. We are looking forward to working with the students in these areas during Term 4.
The Annual Fancy Dress Ball will be held at Kalamia SS on Thursday 9th September. Permission forms will go home today and are due back on Thursday 2nd Sept. The start time will be 1.30pm with a sausage sizzle then our dances for the rest of the afternoon. Parents are welcome to join us at 1.30pm. Students can come to school in their costumes.

CLASSROOM NEWS
Prep: We have been exploring the origins of fibres and food and discuss-ing where our food comes from. We have had a great time looking after our vegetable patch and learning about the technologies used in large scale farms to produce food.
Year 1: We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and where we can find them in our school environment. We are exploring capacity and which container holds more, and we have sometimes had to adjust our thinking! We are working on our information reports and learning about mammals!
Year 3-4: Our students have been focusing on 3D shapes and their proper-ties and well as exploring area and measurement using informal and formal methods. We are working on our Science task relating to the positioning of the sun and its effects on day and night time in different locations around the world. We are working on our informative texts and noticing how the structure of an informative text is different to a narrative text.
Year 5 –6 Year 5/6 have explored measuring angles, and finding unknown angles in a variety of situations. Learning about climatic zones around the world and the impact the uses of land has been interesting and challenging. We are analysing climatic data and the impact climates have on location of communities.

Special events
Science Day
We had a great time with our friends from Airville SS and Maidavale SS during our annual Science Day.
We had a great time learning about air propelled cars, forces and giant fingerprints! We mastered the magic trick of pushing pencils through a zip lock bag full of water and not spilling a drop and building a safety cov-ering for a raw egg, which we then dropped from the top of the verandah! We experimented with dancing sultanas and made our very own ice-cream!
Thank you to our friend Constable Monica– KSS Adopt-A-Cop who popped in for a visit. Thank you to the staff from each school who made the day a great learn-ing experience and lots of fun!

the Week Awards
Parade is held every Monday afternoon at 2.45 pm, either in the classroom or the undercover area (depending on the weather
conditions and construction zones!) Each week, our Student of the Week Award and Principal’s Awards are presented on Pa-
rade. The Student of the Week Award recognises a student who has demonstrated improvement either in their learning or be-
haviour choices.

REMINDERS AND NEWS
• Attendance matters—Ok Reasons to miss school—sick and natural disasters.
NOT Ok reasons—shopping, holidays or sleeping in. It is an adults responsibility to ensure their child is at school
every day. If your child is ill, please send a text message to 0459 885 273.
• No hat no play no outside learning activities—students are required to have their hat each and every day. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom and without a hat, your child may miss valuable information and prac-tical lessons.
• Remember to check the due date on permission forms and tuckshop forms. Forms will not be accepted after due dates.
• As we are a small school, late forms place undue pressure on staff and affect the timing of teaching commitments, as well as legal requirements. No form—no participation .
• Swimming lessons will commence in Week 2 Term 4. Students will be transported ot the Burdekin Swim School by bus at 1.30pm. Lessons are from 1.45 pm—2.45pm. Students are to be collected from the Burdekin Swim School by 3.00pm
• Interviews are offered in Term 1 and Term 3, and the school has an open door policy. If you would like an inter-view, please contact the school office to arrange a suitable time.
HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Speech pathologists study, diagnose and-
treat communication disorders, including
difficulties with speech, language, fluency
and voice. Thank you to Mrs Sharyn Holm
who is our wonderful speech pathologist at
Kalamia State School. Mrs Holm works with
our students and provides support for staff
and parents, and is a part of our Student
Support Team.
Positive thinking
How we cope in life often depends on how we see
situations. When children think positively and have
a sense of optimism, they are more likely to have a
go and succeed. Suggestions to support your child
to develop a positive outlook in everyday situations
• Talk positively about situations. For exam-
ple, saying ‘I was just thinking that when you
allow enough time and really try hard with
your maths homework you usually get good
results’, is more helpful than ‘See, you never
allow enough time and you really don’t try
hard enough with maths’
• Reframe what children say. For example, if
they say they don’t have any friends, you
could say ‘Sometimes it’s hard to find a
friend, but last week you had fun when you
were playing that game with James
Kalamia State School invites parents of eligible Prep students to make contact
with our school office. We can check your child’s eligibility and give you an infor-
mation pack about our school. Upcoming open days and transition times will be
published in our school newsletter and on our school Facebook page.
