LEADERSNEWS The last 2 weeks seem very short with the long weekend, Pupil Free Day and the Heptathlon. Recently staff have been actively involved in professional learning with their colleagues from across our partnership. This has included the culmination of Collaborative Moderation in Mathematics and attending a day’s training on Creating a Culture of Thinking facilitated by Simon Brooks on the Pupil Free Day. Both of these professional experiences have given staff the opportunity to engage in deep professional conversations and devise learning experiences that encourage more complex and detailed thinking. Moderation enabled teachers of the same year level to work with colleagues from neighbouring primary schools. They created, taught and assessed a common task facilitating transparent and consistent decision making on allocating achievement grades. A large number of parents and extended family braved the inclement weather to support our students as they took part in the annual Heptathlon last week. This event is a highlight for many students as they love to ‘improve’ on the number of laps they did last year. The rain held off and the sun came out just at the right time to support us to complete the course. Students who have obtained sponsorship are now able to collect it and bring it to the cashier’s window. In a fortnight the student from each class who has the highest amount of sponsorship will be presented with a small prize. The class with the highest average per student will win the pizza snack. Money raised will go towards the new Nature Play space. The front garden and meeting space is now finished and ready to be used. It looks amazing and many families have already commented on how it lifts the look of the school. Students are looking forward to sunny days where they can use these for Reading groups and other collaborative activities. This is a good place to meet after school while you wait to collect your child. An article in the local paper last week about the unearthing of the Time Capsule brought in some visitors to our school. There were past students, parents and even the principal from 1986 all interested in seeing the contents of the capsule and this brought many stories. Our current students have enjoyed looking at what work looked like when their parents went to primary school and the photos of what the playground used to look like has resulted in lots of animated conversations. First semester reports are due to come home in week 9. Teachers are currently working on finalising these and students are reflecting on their progress, their success at reaching goals set, and the growth areas to continue to persist with. This will provide parents with a good starting point to discuss their child’s progress with them. – Vicky Bashford DATES TO REMEMBER JUNE Mon 18 th FYI Health Incursion R-5 & Rm 16 Tues 19 th Cup cake Day for Craft stall funds Fri 22 nd Rm 13, 14, 15 to Parliament house Assembly 2.30pm ALL WELCOME Rm 6 & Rm 18 hosting Mon 25 th School Council meeting 7:30pm Rm 4 & 17 to Maritime Museum Tues 26 th Rm 5 & 6 Maritime Museum Rm 13, 14, 15 Adelaide Zoo Wed 27 th Athletics try outs during class time Fri 29th Reports go home Sci World excursion Rms 13,14,15 JULY Fri 6 th Last day Term 2 2.10pm dismissal Casual clothes day gold coin donation CHECK OUT OUR SKOOLBAG APP INFO Week 7 THURSDAY, 14th JUNE

LEADERS’ NEWS The last 2 weeks seem very short with the long weekend, Pupil Free Day and the Heptathlon. Recently staff have been actively involved in professional learning with their colleagues from across our partnership. This has included the culmination of

Collaborative Moderation in Mathematics and attending a day’s training on Creating a Culture of Thinking facilitated by Simon Brooks on the Pupil Free Day. Both of these professional experiences have given staff the opportunity to engage in deep professional conversations and devise learning experiences that encourage more complex and detailed thinking.

Moderation enabled

teachers of the same year

level to work with colleagues

from neighbouring primary

schools. They created, taught and assessed a common task facilitating transparent and

consistent decision making on allocating achievement grades.

A large number of parents and extended family braved the inclement weather to

support our students as they took part in the annual Heptathlon last week. This event is

a highlight for many students as they love to ‘improve’ on the number of

laps they did last year. The rain held off and the sun came out just at the

right time to support us to complete the course. Students who have

obtained sponsorship are now able to collect it and bring it to the cashier’s

window. In a fortnight the student from each class who has the highest

amount of sponsorship will be presented with a small prize. The class with

the highest average per student will win the pizza snack. Money raised will

go towards the new Nature Play space.

The front garden and meeting space is

now finished and ready to be used. It

looks amazing and many families have already commented on how it lifts the look of the school.

Students are looking forward to sunny days where they can use these for Reading groups and

other collaborative activities. This is a good place to meet after school while you wait to collect

your child.

This will provide

parents with a good starting point to discuss their child’s progress with them. – Vicky Bashford

CANTEEN NEWS Within this newsletter, please find a price list of the Canteen stock items. We will endeavour to update this as changes occur, however, please note that stock is subject to availability.

The Canteen is a great place for your child to see YOU active within their school community. If you’ve got an hour to spare once a week / fortnight / month or even term, please let Jodie know on the reply slip in this newsletter. We do have some wonderful volunteers who assist on certain days each week; however, we’d like to open up the Term 3 calendar to ALL parents to assist, once, twice or as many times as they’d like to. Your child/ren learn valuable lessons of community by seeing their parents involved at the school, and the Canteen is a great place to start! All welcome; however, whilst volunteering young toddlers are not permitted in the school Canteen for Work Health Safety reasons. We look forward to hearing from you with your availability for Term 3. We’ll call again for volunteers towards the end of Term 3 for the Term 4 roster… so at this time, it’s only one term that we’re looking for your help. And if you enjoy it, and your child enjoys you being an active part of their lunchtime, you may wish to continue into Term 4. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BYODevice & SCHOOL CYBER SAFETY AND DEVICE USER AGREEMENT REMINDER

The response and uptake of students who bring their own device to school has been highly

successful and the school has been able to support students without a BYODevice with a school

borrowed device at school.

We encourage ALL students to use school and BYODevices in accordance with school policies.

We need to ensure that all parties are reminded of these policies and points within each of these

policies, please see below for the most relevant and poignant dot points from each of the polices.

Gaming is blocked through our school internet, however they can download app at home and

have these on their BYODevices. Rest assured games are not accessible through our site.

All students in years 4/5/6/7 have signed and returned their BYODevice and Cyber Safety and

Device User Agreements in which they state:

Cyber Safety and Device User Agreement excerpt:

While at school, I will:

i. attempt to search for things online that I know are acceptable at our school. This would exclude anything that is violent, mean, rude, offensive or that I know our school finds unacceptable. (This currently includes Minecraft)

ii. report any attempt to get around, or bypass, security, monitoring and filtering that is in place at our school.

Only with permission from the teacher will I connect any ICT device to school

computers/devices/WI-FI/network, or run any software (e.g. a USB/portable drive, camera or phone). This includes all wireless/Bluetooth technologies.

BYOD User Agreement excerpt:

I agree not to hack or bypass any hardware and software security implemented by

Edwardstown Primary School or DECD. (This currently includes Minecraft)

I acknowledge that the school cannot be held responsible for any damage to or theft of

my device. I will keep my device in a locked classroom/area when not in use.

I understand that I am responsible for the care of my device, including any costs of repair,

replacement or any modification needed to use the device at school.

I understand that personal devices are not covered by the school or DECD insurance for

loss or damage. I also understand it is my responsibility to insure under my own personal

policy.

Cyber Safety & Device/ BYOD User Agreement Breaches (consequences) excerpt:

1st offence – Unable to use any device for the remainder of the day, a warning and

email/diary note/phone call home by the Teacher.

2nd offence – Unable to use any device for the remainder of the day, a warning and

email/diary note/phone call home from Leadership.

3rd offence – Termination of technology privileges for an amount of time and student would

need to revisit all expectations with Leadership.

We ask that you remind your child of the above points and discuss the consequences for breaking

the user agreements that they signed, to ensure we have no grey areas. As a school, if both

families and students sign the user agreements, we will implement the user agreement as it stands.

Soccer Senior 6’s report A bit of a catch up on previous weeks… In our first week we played St Johns who were mostly year 6’s and new players. They were a lovely team to play against overall with many new players. Although we only had 8 players the end result was 7-1 with goals to Charlie (2), Ben (3), Ollie and special mention to Amy who scored in her first game of soccer! Assists were provided by Amy, Ethan, Kryon, Ahura and Jasmine. In other words, every player either scored a goal or supported a goal. In our second week we played a much tougher team in Clovelly Park. It was a very even game with the final result 3-3 with 2 goals to Amy and one to Louis. Assists were provided by Ethan, Charlie and Jasmine. Fantastic work by the goal keepers and defence to keep the score at this level. We had a bit of help from some of the under 11’s who did a fantastic job in helping the team. In our third week (last week) we played Coro. This was a really challenging game but the team played amazingly. We were down 3-5 but then came back to win 6-5. Scorers were Oliver, Louis (2), Baeden and Ahura (2). Special mention to Leo who kindly offered to play for the other team and even scored a goal for them. I would like to congratulate all EPS players who displayed excellent sporting behaviour during this game when presented with some challenging adult behaviour. Well done. Scott Polley

NETBALL YEAR 2 Netball team Our wonderful year 2 girls won their netball game against Highgate Primary 3-2. I am so proud of the girls and how quickly they have picked up the game, but am mostly proud of their ability to have fun and the excellent sportsmanship they show. Well done Kaylee,

Jaimi, Angelina, Evie, Asha, Anika and Tegan. Bern

BASKETBALL

“You did make our lives

happier by sending this

parcel”

A note from Simone - Pastoral Care

I recently read an article by Kirrilee Smout from Developing Minds Psychology, Kirrilee is inspirational, she has an amazing website full of fantastic hints and tips on how to help support your child go through life. This particular article covered worry, anxiety and being scared in our children. The main point of Kirrilee’s article advises us: Instead of removing or assisting our child to avoid a situation, encourage them to be brave. The more children avoid things they find scary, the more scared they get.

Don't make this well meaning mistake in helping worried kids

Kirrilee then went on to tell us: There are three processes which explain why avoidance increases anxiety. First, when kids avoid something they have no opportunity to succeed, master or cope with the feared situation. They see other children coping well with the feared situation and lose confidence in themselves. They get embarrassed about not coping and label themselves as being afraid of that particular event.

Second, at a subconscious level, when kids avoid something - the part of the brain which evaluates threat notices them avoiding that thing. It says "aha - it MUST have been dangerous, or I would have not avoided it". This increases anxiety the next time around. Third, when we are feeling afraid and we get away from/avoid the thing that triggered our fear - we have a huge sense of relief. This relief is VERY reinforcing and pleasurable. Kids will look to find that feeling as much as they can. This will mean the avoidance itself becomes something that feels good, and they will want to do it as much as they can. To stop this cycle of increasing fear, we need to identify the brave behaviour we want our children to do, and to coach, encourage, reward and enforce this brave behaviour.

To read the full article and find tips and videos on how to help your child, go to: www.calmkidcentral.com There is also an activity sheet to help children understand why we get worried.

Anzac Day packages

Back in March room 8 and I collected items and packed boxes filled with Aussie goodies, letters and pictures. We sent them off to our serving soldiers, sailors, airmen / women. We received a lovely letter from a health defence force team based in Iraq. They wrote: “Many thanks for sending your beautiful parcel, and the special Australian home treats that we miss so much during our overseas deployment, making us more aware of how much people care about us back home, people we don’t even know” “It’s sometimes psychologically hard doing our job when we see others badly hurt and injured, we are a team of 35 medical staff who have shared the package.” “We are nearing the end of our deployment overseas and it has been a pleasure to serve our beautiful country” “Keep up the Australian spirit of helping others, but also look after yourselves, set goals, study hard and keep fit, one day one of you may be serving Australia and be the recipient of a beautiful care package like yours.”
