Woodbury News

Words From Principal Young

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To ensure the safety of all of our students and staff, parents should enter the building at Door L. Please make sure you sign in at the security desk and be prepared to show your driver's license as well. Security will issue you a green visitors pass and then direct you to the main office. The office staff will assist you if you need to visit one of our classrooms. You will be issued a red dot to be placed on the visitors pass which will let the staff know that the proper procedures have been followed for you to move throughout the hallways at Woodbury. Thank you for allowing us to ensure our students' and teachers' safety.

Conference Days are fast approaching! Our Conference Days are Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, November 3rd. If have not made an appointment to meet with your child's teachers, please contact your son's or daughter's teachers to schedule an appointment. It is not too late! We are aiming for 100% participation to share the learning taking place at Woodbury Elementary School!

Have you created an account on ProgressBook to monitor your child's grades? Mr. Bednar, Woodbury Design teacher will be holding ProgressBook workshops on both conference days in November. Stop in Room 316 between 8:30am -11:30am or 1:30pm -3:30pm. for a hands-on tutorial regarding ProgressBook.

Congratulations to Shoshanah Calland who achieved the Top US Student on the Mathletics Hall of Fame on October 11, 2015, scoring 20,690 points. The Mathletics Hall of Fame is a scoreboard showcasing the top scoring students and classrooms in the US and around the world. The top student is determined by points earned in both curriculum and Live Mathletics activities.

Thank you for another great week at Woodbury Elementary School.

Drama Club Bakers Needed

Drama Club will be hosting a bake sale during our conference days November 2&3. We need bakers as well as volunteers to help at the tables. If you can help in any way please sign up using our Sign Up Genius link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4caaab2aaafd0-woodbury

We had our first meetings this week where we passed out scripts, t-shirt order forms and bake sale information. Due to our large cast size, we are unable to provide every actor with a cd of the songs. If you don't have a cd, please find the songs needed on YouTube.

The rehearsal schedule for the next month can be found online at www.woodburydramaclub.com as well as the forms we passed out. Our website is the best source of information for our club, please check it frequently for updates.

PTO Meeting featuring "Supporting your Child's Learning at Home"

From the Woodbury School Counselor

I will be going into the classrooms to discuss several topics, such as, bullying, peer pressure, sympathy vs. empathy, and grief/loss to name a few. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

I am also starting a grief/loss group that will begin this week. If your child has lost a pet, a loved one, or just didn't make the Team, I am here for them. Loss means change and change can be very difficult for our students. There are many ways our students could have experienced loss. While most of painful losses often result from a death of a loved one, people also grieve when they experience misfortune. This can also happen when parents divorce or a best friend moves away. Please let me know if you have any questions.

MAP testing will resume during the window of November 30th - December 18th for 6th grade students and January 11th - January 22nd for 5th grade students. Our students will take one test in language and literature and one in math.

As always please give me a call if you ever need anything or have any questions. I am more than happy to help.

Find Out About the Finnish Educational System on October 29

The High School is hosting the first in a series of internationally-themed community events open to all Shaker students, parents, and community members. The first event is focused on the Finnish educational system, exploring it as experienced by French teacher Suzanne Genillier and the documentary The Finland Phenomenon. We encourage the Shaker community to participate in this dialogue about the power of learning through play, a holistic education that includes both college and vocational programming, the role that testing should (and shouldn't) play in the progress of education, and more! Please join us on Thursday, October 29 in the High School Small Auditorium.

6:00-7:00pm: Presentation and dialogue with Madame Genillier, high school French teacher

7:00-8:00pm: The Finland Phenomenon Documentary and talkback session

As you have ideas for relevant, internationally-minded community programming, please contact John Moore at [email protected] so that we can work together to create an ongoing series of international community engagement throughout this year.

Board Docs

Do you want to know more about what is happening in our School District? There is a wealth of information on the website. Each week a packet is compiled for Board of Education members. This public information is available for all parents to read. Click here to read the most recent packet. And click here to read the Superintendent's Report from the October 13 Board of Education meeting.

Background Check - REVISED

Volunteers are an integral part of creating a successful and nurturing environment for our children throughout the Shaker School District. The type of interactions you have with students determines whether or not you need to have a BCI/FBI background check and be fingerprinted.

- Supervised Volunteers are always in the presence of a staff member, inside and outside of school. NO background check is required.

Page 6: Week B Schedule - Shaker Heights City School District of 10_26.pdf · * Words from Principal Young ... Please contact Hannah Mendelsohn (hbmendelsohn@icloud ... - Unsupervised Volunteers

- Unsupervised Volunteers are able to engage with students with or without the presence of a staff member. Examples include assisting students with reading or math in the hallways or accompanying a class or group of students for an off-campus activity or field trip. Adults in this group must be fingerprinted and have a background check.

If you are not sure where your volunteer role fits in, please remember that the background check process is free and usually takes about ten minutes at the Administration Building. Please call Kiki Stout to schedule an appointment 216-295-4339.

Help Needed for Senior Project and MYP Personal Project

This year we have two opportunities for community members to help our high school students - Senior Project and MYP Personal Project:

Senior Project Would you like to sponsor a student for a senior project this spring (May 2-26)? The sponsor does not need to see the student every day and there is flexibility in how the project is set up (e.g., the student can shadow the sponsor, observe day-to-day operations in the workplace, work on a specific task or project, or any combination of similar activities). Click here for the current year information on the Senior Project program available on Shaker.org. If you would like to sponsor a student for senior project this spring, please complete the Sponsor Contact form or contact Irene Meyerhoefer. Questions can be directed to [email protected].

MYP Personal Project Would you like to mentor a 10th grader working on a Personal Project? Students are encouraged to explore a topic of personal interest and many are interested in experiences outside of the high school and in our surrounding communities. We're looking for willing mentors who are interested in engaging with students. The depth of the relationship is up to the student and mentor, but most interactions take the form of interviews, shadowing experiences, volunteering or additional guidance on topical research. Students begin research in October and finish the product in February. Click here for additional information on the MYP Project. If you have questions or would like to be a mentor for a tenth grader, please contact [email protected].

Tweens and the New Rules of Parenting

Wed, Oct 28th, University School, 20701 Brantley Road

The tween years can be tough. And many parents, perhaps remembering their own experiences, just want to put their heads down and hope it's over soon. However, kids can thrive if parents change up how they approach these years. Join Your Teen Magazine, and a panel of experts, to understand why our tweens behave as they do and what we can do to improve the outcome. There will be a parent expo at 6:30pm. Program begins at 7pm. Event is co-sponsored by the Shaker Middle School PTO and any Shaker family can attend for FREE. Use the code "2015US" when you register. Click here to register.
