Week of 23rd September 2018
Our Parish Discernment Prayer
Guide our hearts and minds as we come as a parish family
to discern and form our new Parish Pastoral Council.
- May we work together to build
our parish into a vibrant welcoming community
that reflects gospel values of love, justice and hope.
Blessed Columba Marmion, Pray for Us.

Introduction to our Readings
First reading Isaiah 50:5-9 Suffering is a huge question and unjust suffering is even harder. That is the kind of difficult experi-ence which lies this poem / pray-er we are about to hear. The early Christians were reminded of Jesus as they hear these words. Second reading James 2:14-18 It is tempting to thing that being a person of prayer and faith is enough...but the blunt St James thinks otherwise. Unless our con-victions lead to action, what use are they? Gospel Mark 8:27-35 Jesus asks a great question in today’s Gospel...one of those questions which jumps off the page. Many of us are spontane-ously, perhaps unwillingly, asking the same question today.

Unveiling and Blessing of the Icon of Blessed Columba Marmion
Dom Marmion was a priest of Dublin Diocese who
ministered in Dundrum (1880) before teaching in
Holy Cross College. He then joined the Benedic-
tines at Mardesus, Belgium. He became Abbot of
Mardesus, an inspirational spiritual guide and writ-
er.
In 2000, parishioners of Dundrum celebrated his beatification and continue to
pray for his intercession. The Dom Marmion Society, who care for the elderly in
the area, continue to draw inspiration from him.
Last October, the parish commissioned iconographer Mihai Cucu to write an Icon
of Blessed Columba Marmion.
The large Icon will show key elements of Dom Marmion’s life and spirituality.
To mark the occasion of the unveiling and blessing of our
new Icon, we cordially invite you to join with us for
Evening Prayer on Sunday 30th September at 5pm. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will bless the new Icon. Dom Columba
McCann of Glenstal Abbey, will lead us in reflection on Blessed Co-
lumba Marmion and his inspiration to us today. Some of Blessed
Marmion’s family will join us along with religious communities from
the local deaneries.

T H E D EE PEN D: H o w t o we l co m e t he c h i l d In today’s gospel Jesus is presented as the courageous leader, instructing those who will follow on from him and carry on his work for future generations. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.’ Then he took a little child and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’ This September we are celebrating the Season of Creation. Pope Francis challenges us to reflect: ‘What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?’ (Laudato Si’, 160). In the context of today’s gospel we might ask: how are we welcoming generations to come?
Pope Francis urges us to remember that the goods of the earth are not meant to be ex-ploited and states, ‘Doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain. We may well be leaving to coming generations debris, desolation and filth.’ During this creation time let us reconnect once more with nature and restore our relation-ship with the environment. As parish communities we must play our part in ensuring that our world is liveable for generations to come.
‘Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the princi-pal challenges facing humanity in our day.’ Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, 25

As we look at the big effort of a Sunday morning, what helps young parents be en-
couraged to bring children to mass? Going with kids can
be daunting. To keep doing
something uncomfortable, or embarrassing, seems count-er-intuitive. Parishes can do huge things for families. Ours has ‘Pew Packs’: folders with crayons, kids’ readings, even a book inside. My small chil-
dren go in and grab them, and it provides something
for them in the environment. Not every parish can manage this kind of innovation – or the lollipop afterwards, which acts as the perennial carrot to the grumpy toddler. These simple gestures of welcome and hospitality are gratefully received. Children are usual-ly welcome at our parishes
– more than that, there are usually really kind-hearted and gifted people who would
love to ‘do something’ for kids. We should seek those people
out – they are around, the ones who smile at kids and
say nice things to parents like us – and see what ideas they might have.
Whether or not we have the blessings of a lollipop or re-
sources for the little ones, our children are likely to in-
herit our attitude towards the mass. If we groan and sigh and ‘put up with it’, zombie like, trying to sneak out as soon as possible, then they will also. But, if we are loving and reverent, taking the time to talk about the gospel after-wards, or share with enthusi-asm our love for the Lord in the Eucharist, then the kids will look forward to it as well.
Dominic Perrem writes in this week’s Cornerstone, a new section in The Irish Catholic.
Quote of the week
“Each person’s choices have repercussions on the life of everyone.”
– Pope Francis
Challenge: In what ways are you fully aware to the choices that you make, and how those choices affect others? Be aware of what you do each day, and mindful of how your choices impact those around you.

The Luminous Person
“The Christian must be a luminous
person, who brings light, who always
gives light! … A light that is not his or
hers, but rather a gift from God, and a gift
from Jesus. And we bring this light. If the
Christian allows this light to be extin-
guished, his life no longer has meaning;
he is a Christian by name only. It is God
himself who gives us this light, and we offer it to others.
Shining lamps! This is the Christian vocation”. Pope Francis
Lord, in this time of Parish discernment guide our hearts and minds to see new ways of
being involved in our parish community. Help us to continue to offer the light
you have given us to our sisters and brothers. May we work together to build our parish into a vibrant welcoming community that
reflects Gospel values of love, justice and peace. amen
