& Companions
February 6th In 1597, 26 martyrs were
crucified on a hill over-
looking Nagasaki, Japan.
They were priests and laymen; catechists, doctors, artisans,
servants, old men and children, all united in a common faith and
love for Jesus.
Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the
best known among the martyrs of Japan. While hanging upon a
cross, Paul Miki preached to the people gathered for the
execution: “The sentence of judgment says these men came to
Japan from the Philippines, but I did not come from any other
country. I am a true Japanese. The only reason for my being
killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I certainly did
teach the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason I die.
I believe that I am telling only the truth before I die. I know you
believe me and I want to say to you all once again: Ask Christ to
help you to become happy. I obey Christ. After Christ’s example
I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have
pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a
fruitful rain.”

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
The beginning of the Lord’s ministry is dedicated to the restoration of creation to its original status. It is imperative to the completion of this task that it rests in the love of God. Without this one attribute, restoration would be impossible. Using this theme, today’s Liturgy of the Word reveals the extent and depth of this Divine Love. Despite man’s continual rejection of God’s love, the Divine Power continues on the path and will reveal the true meaning of love to mortals. Mortals continue to confuse it with avarice, selfishness, promiscuity, affection and a host of other attributes that are either closely related or abusive and/or aberrant variations. The Divine form is the Greek, agape. This love is self-sacrificing and total where the welfare of the receiver is paramount to the totality of the relationship. It is this love that God repeatedly showers upon His creation for its benefit and growth.
This same love by God for His creation is reflected in today’s reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. In today’s selection, Jeremiah reveals what true love truly is and how it has been corrupted by human beings. Using his own vocation as a prophet of God, Jeremiah acknowledges that his “calling” was determined by God before Jeremiah was even conceived. The prophet reveals that he is well aware that he is called to summon foreign nations while being rejected by his own. This divine calling requires sacrifice and obedience. This paradox of his calling is a result of the love of God for all and the rejection of the Divine by his “Chosen People”, the government and the Temple cult. The latter has twisted the meaning of love and reimaged it into the likeness of man rather than God. They have become selfish, lustful, greedy and worldly to the extent that justice and righteousness are no longer found in their society. Instead, society rejects the Divine Covenant and their God while putting their faith in themselves and their worldly neighbors. Jeremiah ends the reading placing his trust and faith in God, the zenith of agape love.
The importance of agape love is the theme of today’s second reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Paul takes the time to reiterate what true love really is and why it is so important. The Apostle to the Gentiles meticulously details the virtues of sacrificial love and the benefits that originate with it. It is essential to Christian life and
allows Christians to recognize agape love from its aberrant forms, i.e. Eros, Ludus, Philia etc. Without this recognition, mankind separates himself from the Divine and the eternal happiness for which he was created. Paul elucidates the importance of agape, due to the fact that it, and it alone, is eternal and the goal of all Christians. Best exemplified by Christ, this love calls all to the service of God and others. By answering this call, mankind assists in the restoration of God’s creation.
Finally, today’s Gospel by Luke retells Jesus’ appearance and rejection in his home town. This week’s version is more extensive than the account from last week. Today’s account clearly affirms God’s intention to reach beyond His “Chosen People” and include the Gentiles. Jesus addresses his listeners who wish him to perform miracles similar to the ones that they heard. This desire comes from a selfish desire not one based on their faith, which they lack. Christ informs them, using Scripture, that God does not listen nor grants the requests of such people. This infuriates them resulting in their attempt to kill him. Despite their rage and desire, Christ manages to vanish and walk through them. This hostile attitude by his neighbors clearly indicate the manner through which human desires blind people from seeing the revealed Anointed One. Their own motives and actions hinder them from receiving the grace God wishes to bestow.
Today, Holy Mother the Church rekindles that love we received at our baptism. She reminds us that the same self-sacrificing love of Christ is continually available to us. She cautions us not to be like Christ’s neighbors who only sought proof of Divine love through worldly signs. Our Holy Mother gently reminds all that God seeks those who will respond in the same humble manner that the sinners did during the life of Christ. God bestows grace upon those who open their hearts and minds to Him. He transforms the “inner” person into His image making it possible to change creation as well. As Christ’s presence is found within the Church, it calls all to fulfill their vows of service and self-sacrifice. She asks us not to blind ourselves with worldly desires that will hinder our seeing Christ in the world. Through agape love, the Kingdom of God will reach fruition.
