1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format.

1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large

group only format.

What do these symbols mean?

Session at a Glance

"Are we there yet?" Sound familiar? Moses listened to a lot of whining and complaining as he led the Israelites to the promised land. •Read Numbers 13:1-25. Twelve men were sent

to survey the promised land. After 40 days, they returned carrying pomegranates, figs, and a cluster of grapes so large it required two men to carry it. Based on this initial information, what kind of report do you think the men would give?

•Read verses 26-33. Can you hear the response? "Yes, the land is filled with milk and honey, BUT…." Then the list of negatives poured out of the spies' mouths. Only Caleb seemed to focus on what could be done in God's power instead of what they could accomplish in their own strength. What do you focus on—the positives or negatives?

•Read Numbers 14:1-38. The Israelites' response to the exaggerated reports of what the men discovered led to them wanting to return to Egypt. How did God respond to their rebellion? Instead of immediate destruction—His first choice—God sentenced them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until the rebellious generation died. How do you think Caleb and Joshua felt knowing they would be the only ones of that generation to enter the promised land? Do you still obey God when others do not?

•Read verses 39-45. How do you think the people felt when they realized they were wrong to disobey God? Caleb and Joshua demonstrated their love for God by obeying Him. How do you demonstrate love for God? As you teach preschoolers, help them know they can show their love for God by obeying Him, just like Caleb and Joshua did.

Week of June 30, 2013

Joshua and Caleb Chose to Obey God

Based on Numbers 13–14

God told Moses to send 12 men to spy or look at the land of Canaan. The land of Canaan was the land God had promised to give to the Israelites.

After the spies were chosen, Moses told them where to go and what to bring back. How many people lived in the land? Were the people strong or weak? Was the land good for growing food? Did the cities have big walls around them? Moses told the spies to bring back some fruit from the land. The spies left. [The 12 kids sneak around the area like spies.]

After 40 days the spies returned to tell what they saw. [Spies stand beside teacher.] The land was great! The spies showed the grapes. [Display grapes if used.] "But," the spies said, "the people are strong and as big as giants! The cities are strong."

Two of the spies, Caleb and Joshua, told the people to go and take control of the land of Canaan. The other 10 spies were scared. The 10 spies reminded the Israelites that the people in Canaan were like giants, making the spies feel like grasshoppers. The Israelites were scared and complained. [Everyone except Caleb and Joshua shake their heads no.] The Israelites even thought about going back to the country of Egypt and becoming slaves again.

Joshua and Caleb tried to talk to the Israelites. They told the people that God had promised to give them the land. These two spies told the Israelites not to be afraid of the people. Caleb and Joshua reminded the Israelites to trust God to take care of them.

The other Israelites chose not to trust and obey God. Because they disobeyed, the Israelites wandered (walked around) in the wilderness for 40 years, one year for each day the spies were in Canaan. God promised that Caleb and Joshua would one day live in Canaan because they obeyed and trusted God to keep His promises.
