Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
It is not surprising that today’s
selections for readings are in juxta-
position to last week’s Liturgy of the
Word. Last week, the beginning of the
penitential season of Lent, told of God’s
willing assistance to those who place
their faith in Him. The Gospel, itself,
conveyed the Temptation of Jesus in the
desert. Christ successfully passed where
Adam had failed and as a result received
the grace needed to confront His
supreme test – the Cross. The message
was clear. God will assist all who reach
out to Him in order to bring about
victory. Today’s Liturgy of the Word
reveals the ultimate reward, God Himself, that is
bestowed upon those who truly listen to the Word.
The result of truly “listening” to the Word is reflected in
the second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the
Philippians. Paul clearly exhorts the Christians to live life
according to the model they have received. The Apostle to
the Gentiles reminds all that people of the “world” are
corrupt and the end result will be their destruction.
However, Christians own citizenship in heaven and will
reap the glory received by Christ if they adhere to His
teachings. Despite whatever sufferings may come their
way, the Christian who relies upon God will be rewarded
just as Christ was.
This reward is revealed in today’s Gospel according to
Luke that relates the Transfiguration of the Lord on a
mountain. This divine event has been misinterpreted by
many Christians throughout the ages; however, the
significance of it is inestimable. According to many
theologians, it is here that Jesus encounters Moses and
Elijah and learns of the extent of the Messiah’s sufferings.
While this is true, there is another important factor
involved. It is at this point that the full divinity of Jesus is
revealed to his disciples and they are privileged to see him
in all of his Glory. This is the total
revelation of who Jesus really is – God!
Following Christ’s willful acceptance of
the Father’s plan for salvation, the
Father is moved to declare, “This is my
chosen Son, listen to him.” After this,
things return to normal and Jesus heads
to Jerusalem to fulfill the Will of the
Father.
This miraculous event presents a
paradox to Christ’s followers who were
witnesses on the mountain. Jesus
continues to preach that he must suffer
and die. This statement would run
contrary to what the disciples would
expect of their Messiah. According to all the different
beliefs, the Messiah was to establish a new and eternal
kingdom. The Lord’s followers would naturally be
thinking as men do. They would be expecting and desiring
a geopolitical kingdom where the Jews would be supreme
ruler. The upcoming events would challenge their faith
and cause them to fear for their own survival. This
singular event they witnessed would be the slim thread
they could grasp as they awaited the glorification of the
Lord.
Today, Holy Mother the Church reminds us of this divine
revelation. The Transfiguration of the Lord recalls for us
the Divinity of Christ who conquers all – including sin and
death. It is a glimpse of what awaits us if we “listen to him”
and follow his voice. God is calling all through our baptism
to be part of His Chosen People. We are a people who
does His Will and imitates Christ’s sacrificial love for all.
As we shed our mortal framework, we put on the armor
of light. It is through this Light that we show the world the
path to the Father. It is road transverse first by Christ,
then, by those who follow him. Through prayer, almsgiv-
ing and fasting, we prepare for the great Paschal Mystery
where we will rise in glory with our brother, Jesus.

SAINTS OF LENT: SAINT JOSEPH March 19 The Holy Scriptures state St. Joseph, the husband of Mary, was a just man. He became holy by opening himself totally to God and His will. He was simply, joyfully and wholeheartedly obedient to God. He demonstrated his faith be marrying Mary who was pregnant, naming Jesus, shepherding his family to Egypt and bringing them safely to Nazareth. St. Joseph is a great intercessor to pray to for encouragement and guidance.
