Landscaping + Location

Designed by Senan Abdelqader as a residential apartment complex, it functions as the residence for Abdelqader, himself.

The complex features eight units, two of which are penthouse suites, and in the basement a gallery, studio or workspace, and an office.

Mashrabiya House features four main elements:-- The combination of private and public spaces-- Traditional building materials and features including stone and the mashrabiya screen wrapper around the main portion of the complex-- The effect of “floating” of the upper spaces above grade and portions of the building protected and dug into the ground-- Solid, void, and variations of transparency of inner spaces in combination with the mashrabiya screen

Outer Skin - Mashrabiya Screen

A typically Arab concept, this screen is made up of masonry bricks laid out as perforation between a vertical concrete grid.

In some portions of the grid are complete voids or openings between the rows and columns that make up the grid.

What can become confusing about the composition of this building is the fact that the mashrabiya screen grid does not line up with the floor slabs and the floor heights. The effects from the interior are quite of a few partial views of the surrounding area.

The function stays the same, regardless, in that it absorbs much direct sunlight, absorbs the heat, and releases it at night. The space between the screen and the exterior wall of the interior spaces is an air zone that works like a vacuum. As the heated air rises, and as air passes over the top of the screen and building, it pulls that warm air up and out and cool air replaces the warm.

Space Types + Entries

There are five levels with four layers and three different types of space.

The layers include: penthouse spaces, resident spaces, gallery/studio/workspaces, and the most predominant layer being the mashrabiya screen.

There is also space that is public and space that is private. The basement level consisting of the studio and gallery are the public spaces. The upper resident and penthouse levels are private spaces.

The only way to get into this building all happens at the basement level where people enter at grade, and either go down

steps to remain within the public domain or ascend stairs to go toward private spaces.

One can tell if they are in public space by determining whether they are below grade.

Misconceptions

Originally, the sections and renders show a screen built up six squares high and a recessed penthouse level. Photographs of the building in progress and the final result show a screen built up five squares high and a recessed penthouse level.

The sections show that there should be three levels of normal resident spaces and two penthouse levels. The plans, however, are labeled “First and Second Floors” rather than “First, Second, and Third Floors.”

It has become particularly diffi-cult to decipher how many floors there actually are since the floors do not line with with the exterior Mashrabiya Screen.
