• Okonkwo: 12– U was always dependent; always borrowing money– O Responsible, pay back, hard worker– High social status– NO – mad/physical “fists”; no emotion except anger; follows his own rules;

1. Compare/Contrast males and females in the Ibo tribe (roles, treatment of others, expectations, adjectives to describe each, etc.)

2. Figurative Language: Find similes/metaphors/onomatopoeia/personification used in Chapters 1-4 (include pg. #)

3. Create a timeline of events we’ve read about in Ch. 1-4 (watch out for flashbacks!)

4. Religion in the Ibo tribe – make a graphic organizer of all the religious aspects/elements we’ve read about and how these affect the people of the tribe

5. Proverbs – Copy the proverbs from Ch. 1-4, then provide possible explanations of these proverbs’ meanings

AOW - Problems• Summaries are too “general.” Make sure you give specific details

(names, places, dates).• Reflections are too short. Tell me what you think about the topic

in your article. How does this topic affect you, our society, the world? Why is it important?

• Annotations: Make sure you are WRITING NOTES in the margins. I am giving a lot of ZEROES on AOW 3 for this section of the rubric!

• ARTICLES need to be longer. Some of you are losing LOTS of points because you select very simple, very short articles. I am grading for your ability to CRITICALLY THINK about an issue, but if you choose something short and simple, you can’t demonstrate very much critical thinking! So, choose longer articles with more complex issues!

In-Class Work

• You have OPTIONS for the remainder of class today:– READ in TFA (be THROUGH Ch. 10 for tomorrow!)– Work on a reading log (1-4 or 5-10)– Work on Voc. List 2 activities– If you have your AOW printed out and WITH you, you

TFA Ch. 5-10 Reflection – 9/30/2011

On a clean sheet of paper in your TFA section, write roughly a PARAGRAPH for each of the following:1. Out of all the events you’ve read about in Ch. 5-10, which

one was the most shocking to you? Which one stood out? Explain why.

2. What does Chapter 10 show about the system of justice in the community? What do you think about this? Is this an effective method of settling cases?

3. Ekwefi is Okonkwo’s second wife. Choose an adjective that best describes her and explain why you chose that adjective using evidence from the text.
