A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

Today’s Gospel for this Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time is the conclusion of Chapter 13 from Matthew. For several weeks, Jesus has been teaching the crowds about the kingdom of heaven in parables, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for his disciples. Once again, Jesus offers us three more short parables.

In the first parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth possessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell everything else to possess. These parables teach us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. And in the third parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to fishing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated.

Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a household who “brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that Jesus is here instructing the early Christian community on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jewish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jewish tradition; it interprets it in a different light.

PS- Several additional things I want to say. First, I want to thank our Bishop and the Vocations Office for allowing Deacon Tyler Sparrow to spend his summer here at St. Mark. I also want to thank Deacon Tyler for serving here at our parish. Unfortunately, during this pandemic, Deacon Tyler probably did not have the opportunity to meet many of you, but he was certainly helpful to me in helping me with baptisms, graveside funerals and daily and weekend Masses. I pray that as Deacon Tyler is about to begin his final year in the seminary, that he will persevere to become ordained next summer, God willing. May God bless you Tyler in your final year at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia.

Secondly, for several Saturdays in a row, our first communicants will be receiving First Holy Communion which was postponed during the Easter season due to the Covid Pandemic. Although we can’t congregate in large numbers, we are able to let them receive Holy Communion in much smaller groups. Pray that our first communicants will continue to grow in their faith as they receive their First Holy Communion. God Bless our children! May God bless our Catechists too!!

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Commitment Matthew 13:44-46 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44)

Living the Word: In the parables that we hear today, Jesus explains how priceless the Kingdom of Heaven is. Jesus teaches us that God’s kingdom is like these treasures. As a family, think about making a treasure box for your prayer space/table. Read the parable of the Pearl of Great Price. Talk about what it means that the merchant sold all he had. What is the treasure that we have found in God? Have your family write down responses on slips of paper and put them in the treasure box.

Questions of the Week: Child: What good thing do you want so much that you would give me something else to get it? Adult: What would you be willing to “sell” or do without, in order to achieve your dreams for yourself or your family?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On July 29th we celebrate the feast of St. Martha. She, along with her sister Mary, and brother Lazarus, were good friends of Jesus. Jesus would often come and stay at their home and visit with them and have dinner with them. In the Scripture we hear of one instance where Mary was preparing food and was annoyed at her sister Mary for not helping her. St. Martha is the patron saints of cooks, housewives, and hotelkeepers. Do you LIKE to cook? What would you serve for dinner if you knew that Jesus was coming to your house for dinner tonight? Well remember, He is there! He is always with us!

Respect Life News— A Tragic Decision On June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote in "June Med. Services v. Russo" overturned a Louisiana law that required abortion clinics to meet the same standards as every other ambulatory surgical center in the state. Katrina Jackson, who authored the legislation and who is pro-life, noted that the Court in this tragic decision continued to put the interests of the for-profit abortion industry ahead of the health and safety of women. Her legislation was not an attack on the legality of abortion but an attempt to require abortion clinics to meet the same health standards as the rest of the medical profession. As Ms. Jackson asks-why should we settle for lower standards for women, especially when many women are coerced or abandoned to the trauma of abortion? Response to yet another capitulation to the abortion industry was quick and direct by those who value all life. Among the respondents was Archbishop Joseph Naumann (KS). The archbishop's comments called attention to the fact that abortion "violently ends the life of a child , and often severely harms women. Abortion becomes even more destructive when basic health and safety standards are ignored, and profit margins are prioritized over women's health." He also stated "The Court's failure to recognize the legitimacy of laws prioritizing women's health and safety over abortion business interests continues a cruel precedent." He went on to say we will not rest until the Supreme Court corrects the grave injustice over the Roe decision and recognizes the Constitutional right to life for unborn human beings. He concluded "And we continue to ask all people of faith to pray for women seeking abortion, often under enormous pressure, that they will find alternatives that truly value them and the lives of their children." (Sources: Numerous).

Please visit www.prolifealliance.com and sign the petition for the Life at Conception Act. This Act follows the Court's own instructions that leave it to Congress to define exactly when Human life--and constitutionally-protected "personhood"--actually begins. This legislation would declare unborn children to be persons as defined by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, thus entitling them to legal protection. Thank you so much for your strong support for the precious unborn babies.
