IN MEMORIAM

Kalle Botha and Tjaart van der Walt's wife passed away recently.

Prof Thys Siglé writes about his old partner as follows :"Kalie kom vanaf Pretoria, skool AfrikaanseHoër Seunskool, BScQS by Universiteit van Pretoria, begin bourekenaarspraktyk Sigle en Botha in1963, Hy maak in 1966 die kantoor Botha en Siglé oop in Durban. Sigle en Botha smelt in 1980 saammet Austin Stewardt en Ellis en word Norman en Siglé. Kalie bly in Durban kantoor totdat hy bedankom 'n invoer/uitvoer besigheid te begin. Sy dogter was getroud met 'n Amerikaner en het daarom VSAburgerskap ontvang en daarom kon Kalie en sy vrou VSA toe gaan en 'n werkspermit kry. Daar het hy"bourekenaarswerk" vir 'n firma gedoen (hoofsaaklik waardasies van skade aan geboue). Daar afgetreeen daar oorlede nadat hy kanker opgedoen het en toe beroerte aanval gehad en paar dae daarna(Woensdagoggend) oorlede. Sy vrou Ruth en haar dogter Leonie bly nog daar. Hulle het ook tweeseuns Jacques in Botswana en Gerrie in Durban. Kalie was 'n baie begaafde sportman en hetuitgeblink in veral muurbal en waterpolo. In waterpolo het hy Noord Transvaal en Natal verteenwoordigen dan ook verskeie kere Springbokkleure verwerf.

Our thoughts and prayers are for Tjaart and the family of Kalie.

VIRUS ON THE CUG?

Does your anti-virus program warn you of a Trojan threat when you want to access the CUG?

It seems that some anti-virus programs are giving such a warning whilst others do not. We first becameaware of the problem last week and immediately contacted MWeb with whom the site is hosted. Theyare currently looking into the matter but have not given us an answer as yet.

The fact that certain programs do not report the issue could be an indication of a false-positive but we

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ASAQS APPOINTED

The Board wishes to announce that Mr Larry Feinberg has been appointed as the new ExecutiveDirector of the Association. It is expected that he will take over from Prof. Thys Siglé at the beginningof October 2011.

Larry's previous position was as the regional manager of the Chartered Institute of Building for Africa(CIOB-Africa).

As regional manager, Larry was responsible for the overall regional branch financial management,profitability and running of the Africa branch office - as well as the continual monitoring and approval ofall branch office expenditure and project investment. He was also responsible for the administration oflarge financial subsidies sent from Head Quarters in the United Kingdom, and ultimately responsible forthe distribution, allocation and effective utilisation of these subsidies through various projects,sponsored events and committee structures.

Larry takes over the management of the offices in Midrand at a crucial juncture in our profession'shistory. His dynamic leadership will be required to steer the ASAQS through the current economicturbulence towards a prosperous future for all its members.

MEETING WITH THE SACQSP COUNCIL

A presentation will be made to the SACQSP Council on the 13th October 2011 to discuss re-instatement by the SACQSP of its recognition of the Association of S A Quantity Surveyors as aVoluntary Association, in terms of the requirements with which a Voluntary Association should complyin order to qualify for recognition by the Council under Section 25 of the Quantity Surveying ProfessionAct No 49 of 2000.

ADVANCED CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS

The Council of the AAQS has now resolved to open up a separate membership category for QuantitySurveying practices with effect from July 2011. This decision was taken following ongoing requests frompractices for such a category of membership to be introduced. Numerous practices had expressed thewish to become more directly involved with the affairs and activities of the AAQS and the formation ofsuch a membership category would serve to formally enable this process to be regularised.
