Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Hoy el Evangelio nos presenta el acontecimiento de la Transfiguración. Es la segunda etapa del camino cuaresmal: la primera, las tentaciones en el desierto, el domingo pasado; la segunda: la Transfiguración. Jesús «tomó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a su hermano Juan, y subió con ellos aparte a un monte alto». La montaña en la Biblia representa el lugar de la cercanía con Dios y del encuentro íntimo con Él; el sitio de la oración, para estar en presencia del Señor. Allí arriba, en el monte, Jesús se muestra a los tres discípulos transfigurado, luminoso, bellísimo; y luego aparecen Moisés y Elías, que conversan con Él. Su rostro estaba tan resplandeciente y sus vestiduras tan cándidas, que Pedro quedó iluminado, en tal medida que quería permanecer allí, casi deteniendo ese momento. Inmediatamente resuena desde lo alto la voz del Padre que proclama a Jesús su Hijo predilecto, diciendo: «Escúchenlo». ¡Esta palabra es importante! Nuestro Padre que dijo a los apóstoles, y también a nosotros: «Escuchen a Jesús, porque es mi Hijo predilecto». Mantengamos esta semana esta palabra en la cabeza y en el corazón: «Escuchemos a Jesús».

Es muy importante esta invitación del Padre. Nosotros, discípulos de Jesús, estamos llamados a ser personas que escuchan su voz y toman en serio sus palabras. Seguir a Jesús para escucharle. Pero también escuchamos a Jesús en su Palabra escrita, en el Evangelio. hagámonos una pregunta: ¿leemos todos los días un pasaje del Evangelio? Sí, no… sí, no… Mitad y mitad… Algunos sí y algunos no. Pero es importante. ¿Leemos el Evangelio? Es algo bueno; es una cosa buena tener un pequeño Evangelio, pequeño, y llevarlo con nosotros, en el bolsillo, en el bolso, y leer un breve pasaje en cualquier momento del día. En cualquier momento del día tomo del bolsillo el Evangelio y leo algo, un breve pasaje. Es Jesús que nos habla allí, en el Evangelio. Piensen en esto.

De este episodio de la Transfiguración quisiera tomar dos elementos significativos, que sintetizo en dos palabras: subida y descenso. Nosotros necesitamos ir a un lugar apartado, subir a la montaña en un espacio de silencio, para encontrarnos a nosotros mismos y percibir mejor la voz del Señor. Esto hacemos en la oración. Pero no podemos permanecer allí. El encuentro con Dios en la oración nos impulsa nuevamente a «bajar de la montaña» y volver a la parte baja, a la llanura, donde encontramos a tantos hermanos afligidos por fatigas, enfermedades, injusticias, ignorancias, pobreza material y espiritual. A estos hermanos nuestros que atraviesan dificultades, estamos llamados a llevar los frutos de la experiencia que hemos tenido con Dios, compartiendo la gracia recibida. Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today the Gospel presents to us the event of the Transfiguration. It is the second stage of the Lenten journey: the first, the temptations in the desert, last Sunday; the second: The Transfiguration. Jesus "took with him Peter, James, and his brother John, and went up with them apart to a high mountain". The mountain in the Bible represents the place of closeness to God and intimate encounter with Him; the place of prayer, to be in the presence of the Lord. Up there on the mountain, Jesus is shown to the three disciples transfigured, luminous, beautiful; and then Moses and Elijah appear, who converse with Him. His face was so shining and his garments so white, that Peter was enlightened, to such an extent that he wanted to remain there, almost stopping that moment. Immediately the voice of the Father who

proclaims Jesus his favorite Son resounds from above, saying, "Listen to him". This word is important! Our Father who said to the Apostles, and also to us, "Listen to Jesus, for he is my favorite Son". Let us keep this word in our heads and hearts this week: "Let us listen to Jesus". This invitation from the Father is very important. We, disciples of Jesus, are called to be people who hear his voice and take his words seriously. Follow Jesus to listen to him. But we also listen to Jesus in his written Word, in the Gospel. Let us ask ourselves a question: Do we read a passage from the gospel every day? Yes, no... Yes, no... Half and a half... Some do and some don't. But it's important. Do we read the gospel? It's a good thing; it's a good thing to have a little gospel book and take it with us, in

our pocket, in our purse, and read a brief passage at any time of the day. At any time of the day I take the gospel from my pocket and read something, a short passage. It is Jesus who speaks to us there, in the Gospel. Think about this.

From this episode of the Transfiguration I would like to take two significant elements, which I have in two words: rise and down. We need to go to a secluded place, climb the mountain in a space of silence, to find ourselves and better perceive the voice of the Lord. This is what we do in prayer. But we can't stay there. The encounter with God in prayer again impels us to "come down from the mountain" and return to the lower part, to the plain, where we find so many brothers afflicted by fatigue, disease, injustice, ignorance, material and spiritual poverty. To these brethren of ours who are struggling, we are called to bear the fruits of the experience we have had with God, sharing the grace received. (Pope Francis - Angelus March 16, 2014)

SANTA FRANCISCA ROMANA (1384-1440) 9 de marzo Francisca nació en una familia cristiana donde aprendió a amar a Dios y a los pobres. Contrajo nupcias muy joven, pero jamás abandonó su deseo de servir a los pobres, labor pastoral que fue apoyada por Lorenzo, su esposo. Además de ser ejemplar esposa y madre, oraba constantemente y salía del palacio vestida con ropas humildes para ir a visitar a los enfermos y llevar alimento a los pobres. Su amor por los marginados era tan grande que cuando azotaron inundaciones y pestes no dudó en abrir su palacio para que se convirtiera en hospital y refugio de damnificados, cuidando personalmente de ellos y ofreciéndoles alimento. Este amor por los pobres lo compartió con una de sus cuñadas, con quien no sólo practicó la caridad sino compartió el sueño de ser religiosa. Siendo esposa y madre fundó la comunidad de las Oblatas de María, cuyo carisma era vivir en el hogar sirviendo a los pobres. CAMBIO Cuaresma es cambio y cambiar no es fácil. Para poder cambiar debemos dejar algo atrás. Hoy escuchamos acerca de un hombre muy viejo que decide responder al llamado de Dios. Abram atraviesa por una tremenda cantidad de cambios cuando todo lo deja y lo arriesga por la promesa de Dios. Jesús cambia, se transfigura, justo delante de los ojos de sus discípulos. Las escrituras en Cuaresma nos llaman a cambiar, a ser transfigurados, para que también nosotros pronto participemos en la gloria de Dios. ¿Qué nos pide Dios dejar atrás? ¿Estamos dispuestos a arriesgarlo todo por la promesa que Dios hace? CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT FRANCES OF ROME (1384-1440) March 9

Nature and human nature—plagues and wars—turned late medieval Rome into a living hell, particularly for the sick and poor. Frances, by birth and marriage well provided for, was a devoted wife and mother; but like Benedictine Oblates, who to this day “pray and work” while living with their families and working in the world, she joined like-minded laywomen friends in ministering to society’s most vulnerable. Frances’ charity was not only “hands on” but “in home.” Her palace became a hospital after the plague claimed two of her three children. When her husband’s death ended their loving marriage of forty years, Frances joined other widowed Oblates in community. In an interesting link to the United States, our nation’s premier religious congregation for women of color, the Oblate Sisters of Providence, in 1833 established bonds of spiritual communion with these Oblates of Saint Frances in Rome. Though Black History Month is past, take a moment to learn about the good work that Mother Lange’s spiritual daughters are doing still and consider supporting them as a Lenten project: www.oblatesisters.com.
