Khutbah Theme: Diseases of the Heart Khutbah Date: 4/7/17 Khutbah Topic: Hasad (Envy)
Resource Guide – Hasad – 4/7/17
Objective: To understand, self-‐diagnose, and cure the disease of the heart, hasad (envy).
• Envy is desiring that the bounty bestowed upon another was bestowed upon oneself instead (Lisan al Arab)
o Do they envy other people for what God has granted them out of His bounty? But then, We did grant revelation and wisdom unto the House of Abraham, and We did bestow on them a mighty dominion: (4: 54)
• The Effects of Hasad o Denying the truth
§ Out of their selfish envy, many among the followers of earlier revelation would like to bring you back to denying the truth after you have attained to faith -‐ [even] after the truth has become clear unto them. Nonetheless, forgive and forbear, until God shall make manifest His will: behold, God has the power to will anything. (2: 109)
o Hating one another § The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said concerning
hasad: “Creeping upon you is the disease of the peoples before you: envy and hatred. And the hatred is the thing that shaves. I do not say it shaves hair, but it shaves the religion. By the One in whose hand is my soul – or he said: by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad – you will not enter Paradise until you believe. And you do not believe until you love one another. Certainly, let me inform you of that will establish such for you: spreading the greetings (of peace) among yourselves.” (Recorded in Ahmad)
• How to diagnose envy in oneself o Concealing the virtues of others o Feeling bad when another is spoken of well o Backbiting and slander o Pointing out the negative in others; holding contempt for others
• How to heal from envy o Acknowledgement is the beginning o Contemplate on the destructive effects of envy o Make dua for the people of whom one is envious o Shukr therapy – that is, remember the bounties of Allah on oneself and thank
Him for them o Make dua for Allah (SWT) to join one’s heart with the one of whom one is
envious
