Pastor Dan Bosley Mercy Coalition of West Sacramento
In response to the clear humanitarian need to provide safety and refuge to the unsheltered of our city during winter weather, the Mercy Coalition of West Sacramento and its partners have purposed to pilot a network of 20-bed Winter Warming Centers (WWCs) in 2018-2019. The centers will be made available 5 nights a week at participating church facilities, with intake occurring at designated off-site locations and no walk-up clients permitted. In consultation with First Step Communities of Sacramento, the Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter of Davis, the Triage Shelter Program in Sacramento, and other similar regional models, the Mercy Coalition will employ the tested best practices of local rotating models to ensure that all of its staff and volunteers are vetted and trained at a high level. WINTER WARMING CENTERS QUICK FACTS Dates of Operation: November 26, 2018—March 15, 2019 (5 nights/wk) Planned Locations: Center for Spiritual Awareness, 1275 Starboard Dr. Community Lutheran Church, 920 Drever St. Lighthouse Covenant Church, 3605 Gregory Ave. Southport Church, 2919 Promenade St. W. The President’s Page T-Bird Troy’s
OPENING REMARKS FROM THE MEETING 11/9/2018
Hero. Hero is a word that is overused in my opinion. And in doing so it diminishes the deeds of real heroes. We often hear “he is my hero” referring to an athlete or often a well-known and famous person. I think rather than hero what is really meant is “he’s my role model” or “she’s my inspiration” referring to someone who has overcome adversity or prevailed despite difficult circumstances
I think “hero” should be reserved for someone who knowingly puts his or her life at risk in order to protect or save someone else. The First Responders on 9/11 were great examples of what I mean. While others were fleeing for their lives, the First Responders rushed into the danger in an attempt to save those whose lives were in jeopardy. A hero could also be a passer-by who happens to come upon an accident victim in a burning car. Overcoming his fear he pulls the victim from the car. Anyone who confronts a violent would-be assailant by placing herself between the aggressor and potential victim is a hero to me. I would like to recognize our veterans and thank them for their ser-vice. We hear that a lot too: “Thank you for your service.” And when we say that as Rotarians it has special significance because we know about service—Service Above Self. We are not thanking these veterans for he-roic service (I’m quite sure none would claim to be a hero). We are thanking them for ordinary service but it came under extraordinary cir-cumstances. These vets voluntarily (now some may have been volun-teered) put themselves out of their comfort zones. And, as a result they found themselves far away from family and friends, in places not of their choosing, in difficult and sometimes dangerous situations. They “traded in” some valuable years of their lives delaying the start of their careers while others were beginning theirs. I say “traded in” because what the veterans got in return was a good dose of discipline, they were given leadership skills and opportunities, and they gained lifelong friends. They also acquired a great sense of confidence in their abilities and pride in their accomplishments. So their years in the service were formative years helping to shape who they are today. This is why I am honored to be your 70th president of the mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento.

T-Bird Troy’s OPENING REMARKS FROM THE MEETING 11/2/2018
An old Chinese proverb says: “Tell me, I’ll forget, Show me, I may remember. But involve me and I’ll understand.” So it is in Rotary. Our new members are
told about Rotary when they join, but sometimes they forget. They are shown about Rotary at weekly meetings, but a lot of this they do not remember. It is
only by being involved that they ever really understand what Rotary is all about. It is under the leadership of the chairman of the committee to which
they are assigned that new members truly become involved in Rotary. A really good chairman not only looks at the assignment, but follows through, assuring
that every man on that committee is given something to do. That’s what brings to the individual member the truth of our doctrine, “Service Above
Self.”

JoAnn Moffett and I are the Youth Ser-vices chairs and we arrange all of the
student visits to the club. This past Friday we had two students from Southport Elementary School sched-
uled to be honored as "Students of the Month". Unfortunately, both JoAnn and I had conflicts with our jobs at the last minute and neither of us were able to
make it. I would like to give a big Shout Out and THANK YOU to Chris Bradford who took over our duties to introduce the students and present
them with the certificates. Thank you for stepping in and helping us out at
the last minute.

WEST SACRAMENTO ROTARIAN SPOTLIGHT
And THANK YOU!!! Bill Bevier
A huge thank you goes out to Past President Wild Bill Bevier. As T-Bird Troy states, “He is one on the only two I can count on to take notes and he’s the best dad in the world.” Well, I agree with that Mr. President. To
top that off, he most recently agreed to step back onto the Board of Directors as Past President, again!
Let’s give Bill Bevier a big thank you and Mighty is as Mighty Does handshake for being a excellent model of true Rotarian.
Thank you Wild Bill!!!!
