First Sunday of Lent:

A Time of Preparation

As Lent begins, and the catechumens enter into

their final phase of preparation for baptism, the

whole Church begins a period of spiritual

renewal leading to Easter. Lent is a time of

retreat, repentance and contrition. We journey

inwardly to the desert places of solitude and

silence to rediscover God’s unique and abiding

love for us. This love strengthens us for our

mission in the world.

Today we look afresh at the human condition, its

wretchedness and its need for salvation. We

consider the central role of Jesus in all this and,

through his own temptation, we look deeply into

the heart of the Incarnation. All these matters are

presented mythically – in the archetypal fall of

humankind in Eden; then theologically – in St.

Paul’s explanation of the plan for our salvation;

and finally in actuality – historically in the life of

Jesus.

Only by living the entire human experience

could the fullness of incarnation truly work.

Jesus confronts the gamut of human weakness

and temptation – power, pleasure, wealth – and

all they contain. He lived and overcame the

power of sin in anticipation and suggests the

Easter victory at the commencement of his

ministry.

Before the beginning of his public ministry Jesus

is driven into the wilderness by the Spirit to fast

and pray. He is about to undertake his mission

and must prepare by putting all other things

aside. His sojourn in the desert is a time of

serious, focused prayer.

Like Jesus, we too are urged by the Spirit to get

down to basics during Lent. If we are to renew

the covenant of baptism, which empowers us to

love and serve others, we must put aside

whatever is not essential in our lives and take the

risk of entrusting ourselves completely to God in

prayer.

Reflection: Pruning Time

Pruning time is a

painful time for a

fruit tree.

The pruner rids it

of all those suckers

which use up a lot

of energy but produce no fruit.

However, the aim of this surgery is not to

inflict pain, but to help the tree produce

more and better fruit.

Lent is a kind of spiritual pruning time.

There is much that is useless and perhaps

harmful in our lives, which saps our

energy, and diminishes our spiritual

fruitfulness.

Of what shall we prune ourselves this Lent

so that we may become more fruitful

branches of Christ, the true Vine? (F. McCarthy, SDB).

May you all have a fruitful and prayerful

Lenten season. Fr Paul

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO FASTING When we think of Fasting we think of giving up something like chocolate or television. Here are some creative ways we can welcome Jesus’ healing touch during Lent. Try fasting from a different one each week of Lent and create a habit.

FAST FROM ANGER

Give your family an extra dose of love each day.

FAST FROM JUDGEMENT

Keep in mind how God overlooks your faults

FAST FROM DISCOURAGEMENT

God has a perfect plan for your life!

FAST FROM COMPLAINING

Before you do, recall the moments of joy you’ve had.

FAST FROM RESENTMENT

Work on forgiving those who may have hurt you. Be contented with what you have.

FAST FROM SPENDING

Try to reduce your spending on yourself and give what you save to those in need.

Stan Churchill, a regular parishioner for over 30 years attending the 7am & 10am Masses in Tewantin, is now permanently residing at St Mary's Aged Care Home at Coolum Beach. Stan would be happy to have visits if you are in the area and thanks you for your prayers.

Project Compassion 1st Sunday of Lent

1st March 2020

Shirley, 36, is an indigenous Manide woman living in a remote province in the Philippines. Shirley was struggling to support her family and keep their children in school. She faced regular discrimination and disadvantage, limiting her family’s access to food, education, employment and healthcare.

With Caritas Australia’s support, Shirley trained to become an indigenous health worker. She has learnt to supplement her income and is able to feed her family. The program has also

empowered Shirley to send her children to school.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2020 to help people like Shirley, and her children gain confidence and respect

within their community.

Let’s Go Further, Together. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

THANKSGIVING: Silent Reflection Time

RECESSIONAL: PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN

Praise, my soul, the king of heaven! To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King!

Praise Him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same for ever, Slow to chide and swift to bless. Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness!

Father-like he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows!

Angels, help us to adore him, You behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him, Dwellers all in time and space: Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace!
