Fall is right around the corner, signifying thebeginning of shorter days and longer nights. Aswe connue to make safety a high priority,parents are encouraged to remind their student-drivers to use the defensive approach whenoperang a motor vehicle. As youre well awareby now, texng while driving is a violaon in thestate of Ohio, and drivers under the age of eight-een can be pulled over simply for this violaon.Parents are highly encouraged to remind theirstudent-drivers of the dangers involved in drivingat night or in the early morning, especially whenother young people are also in the vehicle. Textscan and should wait. Everyone plays a part in

geng students to and from school safely.In academic news, Wayne Trace Local Schools

showed improvement in some areas on the ODEreport card. Our performance index (PI) and four-year graduaon rate were up from a year ago.Areas of concern connue to be closing the gapbetween our highest & lowest students andmeeng the 80% passing rate on all state -mandated tests. At Wayne Trace, we recognizethat we sll have some challenges ahead of usconcerning the state report card, and we arecommied to meengs these challenges. Wehave a very diverse student populaon with anarray of educaonal needs, and each one of ourstudents deserves the best educaon that we canprovide. As someone who cares deeply aboutacademic success, I can assure the WT com-munity that I spend enough me vising class-rooms to know that teaching and learning aretaking place every day in all three Wayne Traceschool buildings.

Our teaching sta has several new teachersthis year. As part of being an entry-level teacher,the Ohio Department of Educaon has outlined aTeacher-Mentor Program. Experienced teach-ers work with inexperienced, developing teach-ers right in the classroom of the new teachers.As part of this program, experienced teachersmay videotape the new teachers presenng alesson to students. Noce: If you do not wantyour child to appear in any of these condenalvideos of new teachers, contact your child(ren)sbuilding principal(s) in wring, stang that youdo not want your child to appear in a video. The JH/HS students enjoyed another excingHomecoming week during the week of Septem-ber 22-27. Many thanks go out to our HS studentcouncil, under the direcon of Mrs. Annee Sinn,for coordinang many extra-curricular eventsrelated to the annual Homecoming ceremony.

In school calendar news, please be remindedthat school will not be in session on Wednesday,October 1 for the purpose of a full -day teacherin-service. We ancipate that the in-service onOctober 1 will be our nal full-day in-service ofthe 2014-2015 school year. However, we dohave two-hour delays planned for in-services onOctober 15, November 19, January 21, February18, and April 15. Buses will run two hours late on

each of these Wednesdays with school starngtwo hours later than the normal start -me. Weappreciate the cooperaon from our parents/guardians as we use this me to conduct building-level iniaves that will beer prepare ourstudents for academic success.

Thisis known as the Special Educaon Determinaon.This is based on a set of 20 data and performanceindicators. These indicators make up the SpecialEducaon Prole (SPP) for our school.

Wow! Its hard to believe that the rst nineweeks of school will be completed on October17. Sta and students have worked extremelyhard to meet all of the beginning of year staterequirements.

Our fall AIMSweb and ODE Diagnosc assess-ments have been completed. The data collectedfrom this process will guide specic targetedinstrucon to meet the needs of all students. Itwill also give us data for monitoring on-goingimprovement of skills. Ohios new Third GradeReading Guarantee directs schools to idenfywhich students in kindergarten through gradethree are having trouble reading and then givethe students extra reading help right away. Thegoal is to get these boys and girls caught up inreading as soon as possible.

We look forward to a wide assortment of learn-ing acvies in October. The most importantacvity will be the third grade students taking therequired fall administraon of the readingsubtest for the Ohio Achievement Assessment onTuesday, October 7. The assessment will beadministered in the morning. Please plan doctorand denst appointments outside of the assess-ment me.

The sixth grade class will be heading to thePleasant Valley golf course on October 8. Thiseld trip will support the Fuel Up/Play 60program. Physical educaon teacher Mrs. Mohrand a golf professional at Pleasant Valley willspend me instrucng students about this life-

long sport. Other eld trips will include thepreschool and kindergarten classes heading toLincoln Ridge to enjoy their fall displays.

Learning assemblies this month will be aconcert by Mustards Retreat on October 9. Thisfolk music group will be the opening act for PeterYarrow at the Van Wert NPAC that same evening.

On October 21, the third grade class will bevisited by the Kids on the Block program. This isa program that teaches compassion for thosewho have physical, mental and emoonal chal-lenges in life.

The kindergarten class will celebrate Grand-parents Day on October 24. Grandparents areinvited for lunch and a classroom acvity. Thankyou to all of our Grandparents who were able tocome and join us for our Grandparent Day on

September 26. It is always fun for the studentsto have their Grandparents come to school.

The building-wide Halloween Parade will be at1:30 on October 24. Please come and line thestreets of Payne to cheer the students on!

Finally, we look forward to our upcomingParent Teacher Conferences. Please mark yourcalendar for 5:00-8:30 p.m. on October 29 and1:00-8:00 p.m. on October 30. Since the rst quarter ends on October 17, itts that we schedule a me for parents andteachers to sit down and discuss student pro-

gress. Parent/Teacher conferences will be onWednesday, October 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 andagain on Thursday, October 30 from 1:00 to 8:00.The WTGH goal for this year is 100% parent par-cipaon so we would like to encourage all par-ents to take some me to schedule a conference.

The month of October also indicated the begin-ning of the state assessments. This year the onlyOAA given is the Reading OAA for third graders.The third-grade class will take the Reading OAAtest on October 7. There has been a change inthe state assessment schedule. This year thosestudents who received a score of 400 on this OAAReading will not take the spring Reading OAA,but instead they will take the PARCC assessmentsin Reading in the spring. There are other changesto the spring tesng schedule that will beexplained in future Newsleers.

The PTO fundraiser was very successful again

this year. The PTO uses the funds raised duringthis fundraiser to pay for assemblies, eld trips,and many other items for the Grover Hillstudents. At this me, the sta and I would liketo take this me to THANK the PTO for all thatthey do for WTGH students and sta. Also, onbehalf of the PTO, I would like to thank theWTGH community members for their support.

We are over half way through the rst gradingperiod at the junior/senior high school, andstudents and teachers are adapng well to theimplementaon of laptop computers for deliver-ing instrucon and assessing student learning.Recently, I informally polled an English classabout the use of their laptops. Students in the

class claimed to be using their computers to com-plete 75% of their homework. The benets theyspoke of include the ease of use and the e -ciency the laptop provides to complete assign-ments. I am excited to see students developingreal 21st century skills that will serve them wellaer the graduate from high school.

Please be reminded that the laptop computersare school issued and must be well cared for.Four students have had cracked screens replacedon their laptops. Screens will crack if studentsclose the laptop lid when objects are on the key-board. Students should be careful not to closelids on earbuds or headphones and should notstu papers under the lid of the laptop.

Parent-teacher conferences will be heldOctober 29th and 30th. Please be sure to takeadvantage of this scheduled me by schedulingconferences with your childs teachers. Of

course, I always encourage parents and teachersto communicate with each other throughout theschool year, dont hesitate to call or email yourchilds teacher if you have quesons or concerns.

Juniors who are interested in taking the PSAT, astandardized test cosponsored by the CollegeBoard and Naonal Merit Scholarship Corpora-on, should contact the guidance counselorsoce to sign up. The test, which provides stu-dents scholarship opportunies and providesfeedback on college readiness, costs $14 and willbe administered on October 15

th.

The fall tesng window for junior and seniorstudents who have not passed one or moresecons of the OGT begins October 27. Current10th-12thgraders must pass all ve secons of thetest to graduate from high school. Students whodo not pass the fall test will have addional

opportunies to take the test in the spring andsummer.

The start of the school year has been very busy,with many activities throughout the district. Ihope you have had the opportunity to attend oneof the extracurricular events this fall. Did youknow that residents of our school district who areat least 65 years old are eligible for a free all-sports pass? This is one of the many ways wethank our senior residents for their support of ourschool system. If you have not received a passyet, see Mr. Altimus in the Athletic Directorsoffice. He is usually available from 12:00-2:00each afternoon. The pass is good for admissionto all home junior high and high school athleticevents. We will also be thanking our Senior Citi-zens in December with a Breakfaston December11. Mark your calendar and check the November

newsletter for more details and reservation infor-mation.

The circle drive for student drop-off and pick-uphas been congested at times, but we can make it

better with your help. Please follow the direc-tions of the aides supervising the circle drive and

pull ahead as far as possible prior to letting yourchild out of the vehicle or picking up your child.Using the entire circle drive will allow us to un-load and load children more efficiently. If possi-

ble, have your child get in and out of the car onthe sidewalk side. I have noticed some parentsdropping students off or picking them up in the

parking lot instead of the circle drive. If you donot use the circle drive, please park your car andcome up on the sidewalk with your child in themorning or to meet them at the sidewalk in the

afternoon. Elementary students are not allowedto walk through the parking lot by themselves toget into a waiting car. The police have informedus that they will be ticketing cars parked or pull-ing into the designated handicapped spaces todrop off students, if the vehicle does not have the

proper permit. I urge all parents to use the circledrive for drop-off and pick-up. The extra time ittakes to wait in the circle drive is worth the safetyof our children.

Our first quarter will be ending on October 17. Iencourage all parents or guardians to attend Par-ent-Teacher Conferences. This year we will behaving Parent-Teacher Conferences on October28 and November 4 from 4:00-7:30. We willalso be having conferences in the spring. Com-munication between school and home is vital for

the success of our students.

YEARBOOKSThe yearbook staff is offering a promotional pricefor those who order a yearbook by October 15.Up to this date, elementary yearbooks can beordered for $9, and high school yearbooks can beordered for $32. The prices will increase to $10and $35 after October 15. Order forms are avail-

able in the high school and elementary offices.

MR. BUTE - HS/MSI want to thank the students, staff and communitymembers for the great start we have had in our2014-2015 school year. As we move into Octo-

ber, it is difficult to believe that we are approach-ing the end of our first grading period (October17). Grade cards will be distributed to the stu-dents during the week of October 20-24.

The National Honor Society induction ceremonywill be held on Sunday, October 12 at 2:00 in theauditeria. Congratulations to the new inducteesas well as the current members. Placement in the

NHS is a prestigious honor that you and yourfamily can be extremely proud of. I invite thecommunity and parents to attend and honor theseand current NHS members.

As we are past the midterm of the first gradingperiod, I would like to emphasize the importanceof paying your students school fees. If you areunable to pay the entire amount at once, pleasecontact the school to set up a payment plan so thedebt will be cleared by the end of the 2014-2015school year.

Any junior or senior who hasnt passed all fivesections of the Ohio Graduation Test (Reading,Mathematics, Writing, Science, and Social Stud-ies) will take the needed test(s) during the weekof October 27-30. The student is responsible for

being in attendance for the assigned dates. Wehave spoken with those students and assigned

them a content teacher to provide support in pre-paring for the content test. Please be in commu-nication with your student about his/her progressin preparing for success on the test.

Again this year, we emphasize the importance ofcommunication between the community andschool. I encourage the staff to contact at leasttwo parents each week. I extend the encourage-ment to the community as well. Effective com-munication between community and school playsa vital role in our districts continual growth phi-losophy.

MR. MANZ-ELEMENTARYAs we pass the midterm of the first quarter, it istime to look ahead to many activities coming upin the near future. The end of our first quarter is

October 17. We would like to remind you thatyou need to have at least $16.25 of your fees paidin order to receive your elementary studentsreport card. You may stop in the elementaryoffice and pay this portion, or pay the full amountof $65.00.

The third grade Reading Ohio Achievement As-sessment (OAA) will be administered during theweek of October 6. We encourage parents tomake sure that their third grader gets a good nightof sleep and a good breakfast. This will helpensure that your student does as well as he or sheis capable of.

We have recently completed our screening ofstudents in K-3 in accordance with the 3rd GradeReading Guarantee (3GRG). This law requires

the school to inform parents in writing if theirchild is in danger of not being on-track to beable to read at a third grade level by the end oftheir third grade year. If this is found to be thecase, these not-on-track students will receivetargeted intervention during their K-3 grade yearsto help them reach this goal. For more infor-mation about this law, one can go to the OhioDepartment of Education website and click on the3rd Grade Reading Guarantee link.

We are pleased to inform you that we will bebringingMobile Discovery Theaterto the schoolon October 14. This group brings a portableIMAX screen and will present showings to stu-dents from preschool through 12. One of themain presentations will be on bullying. There aredifferent bullying presentations that will be tai-

lored to the students grade levels. We also hope

to offer other presentations, chosen by the teach-

ers, on this day to the students. In addition, wewill have a Movie Night that night. All arewelcome to attend the movie that evening. Wewill keep you posted with more details on Movie

Night as plans are finalized.

Finally, I would like to encourage you to continueto keep in contact with staff regarding questionsor concerns that you may have. Maintaining astrong line of communication is the first step inhelping to address problems and issues that mayarise. I would discourage just keeping concernsor problems to yourself, or only discussing thesewith other parents/community members. We atthe school need to be able to address issues thatmay arise, and we cannot do this if we are notinformed accordingly. We need to work togetherto gather all of the facts so the situation can be

resolved in the correct manner. This contact canbe achieved through phone calls, emails, and/orparent teacher conferences that are coming up atthe end of October and beginning of November.Thank you for your consideration in this matter,and we look forward to continued cooperation tomake this school year the best it can be.

The PSAT/NMSQT will be given to interestedjuniors on October 15. Juniors were given a sheetexplaining the PSAT in their English class. Thecost for the PSAT is $14.00 and checks should bemade payable to Antwerp Local Schools.

be given a list of scholarships monthly in theirEnglish class.

BOOK FAIRThe book fair is coming on Tuesday, October 28through Tuesday, November 4. CHILD SCREENINGFree early childhood screenings are held periodi-cally during the year for children ages birth-5years.
