WEEKLY ROUNDUP 30.9.16 After a winter hiatus where almost nothing happened for us on the game fishing front, The Weekly Roundup is back on line. The first In Hours comp of the season was a washout, but six boats — Hoo Kares, Alcatraz, Foreign Exchange, She’s A Dream, Sneaky Pete and Duchess fished the second last Saturday. Sneaky Pete is Pete Mallia’s new 5.3 metre Tabs Territory Pro side console, and aside from slaying the reefies over winter, it’s now a marlin catcher too. Sneaky Pete hooked up at the wave recorder. Fishing in the vicinity of the wave recorder, bait was stacking up, as it does there at this time of year. Working one-up, Pete jigged some livies, fed out a slimy on a 24 kilo outfit, deployed the sea anchor and got ready to bottom fish — the real purpose of the mission. Unfortunately, the livie swam back under the boat, so he picked the rod up to redeploy it… only to feel weight on the other end. On setting the hook, this ‘weight’ proved to be an 80 kilo striped marlin! Three miles later, and after a few tense moments boatside, the tag was successfully in.

No rod bucket, no harness, no gloves, no wind-on, no rubber band to hold the tag to the pole — some fish are just meant to be caught! Happily, Rachel Vercoe was nearby and managed to snap the marvellous pics of the hookup and the marlin boatside that you can see hereabouts. Unfortunately, the fish can’t be counted for tag and release points, as Pete put the rod in the holder when he took the leader, but it’s still a mighty effort. Additionally, snapper to five kilos and big trag were also caught; he used less than 20 litres of fuel for the day and ran home at 50km/hr. Well done, Sneaky Pete! Elsewhere, Foreign Exchange got hammered out wide looking for better water, although She’s A Dream had a marlin hit the shotty a couple of times in 450 fathoms without connecting. Coming across a 1 ½ degree temp break in 80 fathoms Hook Kares drove through plenty of sauries being worked by dolphins and gannets, were briefly hooked up to what might have been a yellowfin, and saw a mako free-jumping,

Looks like a Kona 600 pounder! Club Calendar Of Events The season’s social and fishing program is now on the website under ‘Home’ in the drop down menu. Next Comp Day Our next outing is Saturday the 8th of October, with the sked boat to be announced. Daylight Saving will be back fading the curtains and upsetting the cows by then, so fishing hours will be 7.00am to 5.00pm.
